Default Solution for broken / backwards mouse input?

Hi, I'm trying to play the demo for Just Cause 2 on Steam but am constantly fighting the mouse controls. When using faster mouse movements, aiming and turning are slowed down in the game. Likewise when using slow and deliberate movements, aiming speeds up. It's the complete opposite of what is normal for a 3D PC game using a mouse as an input device is like - where moving slow turns and aims slow while moving the mouse fast speeds up turning and aiming to match that speed. Unlike acceleration which accelerates that speed by a factor of x, allowing you to aim or turn faster with smaller, quicker movements (bad), or in this case deceleration (for lack of a better technical term) which slows down aiming and turn with faster movements instead, serving no real purpose except frustrating the player (even worse).

Not only 3D games but even 2D interfaces work in similar fashion of the pointer responding directly to the speed of movements you make. The only way to be consistent in a game with mouse input like Just Cause 2 is to keep the mouse movements to an average speed, which if you've played any shooter on the PC, you know is real tough.

More and more multiplatform games are suffering from these kind of mouse issues and I was wondering how to disable whatever is doing this and make it behave more like a normal PC game with standard mouse input. Is there a configuration file I can edit? I haven't found anything in my brief search.

The console equivalent of this issue would be turning faster when you barely nudge the right analog stick and slower when you have it all the way to one side or another. That would feel just as backwards as this does.

I'm not sure if I'm more susceptible to this style of mouse input reverse acceleration / deceleration / dampening / whatever you want to call it because I generally use a lower mouse sensitivity or what. I know this sort of thing doesn't bother every player but I can always tell when mouse input in a game feels "off" when after a minute I find myself fighting the controls more than enjoying the experience. Further experimentation of adjusting mouse options and testing out the difference of the game responding to slow and faster mouse inputs reinforces the fact that something is definitely wrong.

If it's by design and there's no way to fix it, I would appreciate it if someone could at least tell me as much. Then I'll switch to playing it with a gamepad instead and try to forget the mouse & keyboard setup entirely even though I would absolutely prefer to use a mouse.

Thanks!

Try turning mouse smoothing on.

Already tried every mouse setting I could possibly find, doesn't help much with what I'm experiencing at all. In some ways the basic movement feels even worse with smoothing enabled.

There is definitely negative mouse acceleration, and for people with good mice (high dpi etc) it makes aiming difficult. Bad company 2 has the same thing and the devs at DICE still havent fixed it.

Anyone know if it's fixed in the retail game?

Have you tried the demo again since? Do you still experience this happening?

Please upload your dxdiag file somewhere so we can check over it.

Yeah it's still happening. I mean it's always there because it's a core part of the how the game controls, there's nothing I can change on my end to make it go away unless there is some hidden config or game file I can edit to disable the mouse deceleration. Every gamepad I've tested is perfectly fine of course and every mouse I've tried is ed. I've done everything I can on my end it's all up to the developers to realize what's wrong with their implementation and offer a solution or fix it. It's kinda obvious to me it's not a problem that would be cause by something on my end because practically every. single. other. game. controls perfectly fine by default or after some config fixes (namely recent UE3 games and console ports), but here's my dxdiag anyway:

By the way I appreciate the response, generally no one on the game development / publishing / support side cares about this sort of issue and so it never gets fixed. The rare games that suffer from abnormal mouse input / control can usually be fixed manually by the end user after editing config files and changing some variables, unfortunately there is nothing like that for Just Cause 2. Another mouse related problem is the that generic side buttons for back and forward in applications (mouse4 and mouse5 aka XButton1 and XButton2) can't be bound, I can't remember a game post 2002 or so where this had been an issue.

hey vsync in graphics settings effects mouse movement alot as it createes a kind of smoothing to the look controls. turning it off will make things quicker and sharper movements.

I've already tried disabling vsync along with fiddling with every other option available to me in the game, nothing completely fixes what's wrong with the mouse input.
