How do I get someone to use a mounted gun?

Hi, I'm wondering how I get a NPC to use a mounted gun on a vehicle I am driving.

I usually just take a car that already has a soldier in the mounted gun position.

Just driving near the ally should be enough. Though sometimes they just don't want to. Maybe hooking them to a vehicle would encourage them? Have not tried that yet. There is a mission in missions thread "My way and/or the highway" where an ally is very willing to use a mounted gun.
