[ Edit: This topic is now covered in more detail here: http://www.thelostworlds.net/BO2-Origins.HTML - this thread is preserved for historical reasons. ]
Wow. I was just reading on the IGN forums about a cancelled Chakan game for the Dreamcast, and thought I'd do a little research. Check out these bits of concept art, with corresponding concept art from Blood Omen 2 (which I've linked from XBox.com): Chakan - This harness/hair/red arm-warmer combination looks familiar... Blood Omen 2 -Several views of Kain Chakan - Is that a Glyph Knight? Blood Omen 2 - Definitely a Glyph Knight Chakan - A Glyph Wright equipped for combat? I couldn't find any concept art of the Glyphwrights, but... Blood Omen 2 - Compare to the mask this knight is wearing Chakan - What do you get when you combine the concept art of the Seer with the concept art of Janos? Blood Omen 2 - The Seer Blood Omen 2 - Janos Chakan - If you weren't sure about the Glyph Knight guy having the Sarafan symbol, here you go Blood Omen 2 - BO2 thug with the same tattoo Chakan - Proto-Umah Blood Omen 2 - Umah Chakan - Dude, he's even got the same boots! Chakan - 20th-century Meridian (Check out who Chakan is zapping, as Lady Kreliana points out below) Blood Omen 2 - Sebastian Chakan - ChaKain atop 20th-century Meridian Blood Omen 2 - Kain atop Meridian Chakan - ChaKain vs. one of the female fighters from the Smuggler's Den Blood Omen 2 - Given away by the thigh-highs So, did I just stumble on the biggest Lost World or what? Was BO2 really a remake of Chakan? Or was this all done surreptitiously? It would certainly explain why almost everything in BO2 doesn't involve elements from the rest of the series. Hopefully I can get some kind of official answer, because I'm really curious now. Last edited by blincoln; 05-25-2003 at 07:51 PM. |

Chakan: The Forever Man was a pretty cool Genesis game about an undying guy. The Dreamcast game was in development by AndNow but was cancelled.

Did he fight with two swords? I think I remember this game. I looked at all the pics now, before I had just looked at proto Umah, but I think you may be on to something.

Yeah, he had two swords in the Genesis version. This is IGN's page about the cancelled DC Chakan game, which is where I got the art from:

Woah. At first I saw the similarities as just coincidences, but then the Sarafan symbol... and then the Umah. What have you discovered BLincoln?

Some more information from IGN:
"Annunziata noted that "there are some new developments" but that due to the nature of said developments, no comment could be made as to what was happening with the title." Maybe that was when Eidos picked up the rights? |

Aha!
Here's a link to AndNow's site: http://www.andnow.net/chakan/artwork.html At the bottom, the art is credited to Steve Ross. Guess who is also credited in my BO2 manuals as the Lead Artist/Art Director? |

Very cool, Blinc!
Ol' Chakan reminds me of the evil old guy in Poltergeist 2.

Whoa... The Sarafan tattoo is the certain clincher here... blinc beat me to the punch at the very bottom by identifying the common art director to both games. I was about to ask, "So just what happened to AndNow games?" Perhaps CD made a little acquisition? Veeeeeeery interesting... It certainly explains the vast aesthetic difference between BO2 and any other LoK game...

Wow! This is incredible!
This explains why a different team made BO2. And indeed those story holes...

![]() Hmm, this feels kinda cheating. Even Umah and Kain's new look were copied from the remains of a dead game. It's a shame that DC was so ill fated.

You know, Blinc, upon looking over the 20th century Meridian image, I recall one of my back issues of GamePro with BO2-Kain standing in front of a cathedral (or some building) and a newsstand off to his side. (Which I found kind of odd).
I am going to see if I still have it or if I threw it away. If I don't, you may want to find out the issues that had the BO2 previews in it and check it out. |

I've seen the newsstand image =). I totally agree about it.
I really think this explains *a lot*. Hopefully Chris or another Crystal Dynamics employee can clue us in. |

Hm-well, whatever happened to the game, it appears someone who was a Flash developer and who worked on Chakan was looking for work, rather recently too....Google didn't have the cached page, unfortunately.
That's sad-as late as 2001, AndNow was still saying that Chakan was coming; the whole thing appears to have imploded though-last thing the company appears to be working on is an on-line baseball game; and here, in this Company Statement of 9/12/2002, Chakan is mentioned nowhere-not as being one of their game properties, or as something they worked on, or were "deeply committed " about. It's freaky. http://www.software.or.kr/unione/kip...2020020912.doc |

That explains why BO2 looks a different from the rest of the series in some places... But I don't like this it's sorta dissapointing that BO2 is so much a rip-off from this game.
Still like it tho... |
