Cant get on the menu, cutscene keeps playing.

I have tried to play Thief and everytime it starts i keep getting the cutscene i assume you get when not touching the menu for a while. As a result of the cutscene, i can not access any of the menus. Everytime i press ESC to get out the of the cutscene, the menu flashes up and the cutscene starts again.
