Thing is, I have saved games where I got 550 XP before I made my first K.O. and I have no idea what I did to get the extra 50 XP. Yes, I am a completionist! No, it isn't the vent near the cafeteria.

50 xp for killing 5 mercs in the prequel?

You lost me here... uhh?! Could be a default like you give 2500 credits as default at the start of the game.

I mean I went back and did the prequel without killing anyone to get the pacifist achievement. I know that 50 xp is not a default because I also have games where I only have 500 XP before I make my first K.O. But I don't know why there's a 50 xp difference. I am guessing.

I believe it is the default. I just went back and redid the beginning and I showed up at Sarif HQ before going to the plant, it has the 550 XP on the default.

Does taking out the last 4 mercs in the prequel by blowing up gas canisters count against the pacifist achievement?
