set up LAN multiplayer game

i have just bought a copy of imp glory as my brother kept going on about it. my copy runs fine on my laptop (with no mods) and my brother hasn't modded his either. when we tried to connect on multiplayer game, i found i couldn't create a game as the green tick in the bottom right hand of the screen wouldn't highlight. i have opened port 6601 and upnp is enabled. what am i doing wrong?? as it is really annoying me. do i have to install the v1.1 patch?? surely it can't be too tricky or am i just missing something?? any responses would be gratefully received??
