Help: super loud music, super silent sound!

I'm playing Final Fantasy VII on my Macbook and using Windows XP.

My music is unbelievably loud. I had to turn the music down to one notch in the in-game menu and it still plays normally.

My sound is really really silent. I turned it all the way up in the in-game menu and I still can't hear it unless my ear is right next to the speakers.

How can I fix this? Can anybody help?

The music is MIDI; sounds are not. You'll have to move settings around in your computer's volume panel.
