If you're struggling to get a game working, there are a couple of things to do.

If upon registering with GameSpy you encounter an ‘Illegal Name’ message.

Please ensure that you're not using ‘/’ as any part of your nickname. Please also avoid using any of the following characters as the first position in your nickname: @, +, :, #.



When connecting via GameSpy, any game attempted results in a ‘Connection Error’.

The game requires extra ports to be open on the users’ FireWall setup, the following ports are needed as open to play via GameSpy:-
To PLAY
6667 (IRC)
3783 (Voice Chat Port)
27900 (Master Server UDP Heartbeat)
28900 (Master Server List Request)
29900 (GP Connection Manager)
29901 (GP Search Manager)
13139 (Custom UDP Pings)
6515 (Dplay UDP port)

To HOST
Additional ports that need ’Port Forwarding’.
6500 (Query UDP port)
1042 (Query UDP port)
2302 (DirectPlay UDP port)

I'm hosting and experiencing lag

Check your upload bandwidth, which will often not be the same as your download. If your players are experiencing unacceptable latency and you are not able to make more upload bandwidth available, try reducing the number of players.
