Thief 2 Sound Problems

Alright the game runs fine; movies work, perfect running speed *not fast forward problem*

BUT! Everytime i read a note that brings up another screen or press ESC and go back to the game, the sound becomes very loud for a few seconds then drops back down to where i had it set.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
Any help would be helpful
