Black screen crash out problems (help!)

Hello again,
Got myself a problem I could use some help on. It goes like this: I used to be able to play D/X/3 with my P/4 1.5 cpu, 768 RAM system. I recently UPgraded to a P/4 3.2 CPU & 2 Gig DDRAM. I am also using an ATI 9700 Pro vid/ card.
Now, when I start the game it loads and I have to manally reset the graphics options to 1024X768 + Bloon on.
The game runs nicely for a about 3 mins, then it stutters down to the point of complete seizure, and more often than not, the failure produces either a frozen game, or a black screen (the failure sends my monitor into power-down mode because its no longer getting a video signal).
On some of these errors, I can still hear that the game sound is still active, and on others, the sound stuters so badly, one has to escape the game or reset.
MY QUESTION:
How can I get RID of this problem of the game dropping out on me and causing these problems?
I have even tried to re-install the game, worked on the graphic options in the game, everything I can think of.
Id love to hear from anyone that thinks they can help. This game looks promising, and Id LOVE to FINIALLY "get into it!"
