Default Deus Ex: Invisible War - Possible fixes for common problems

First of all, download the 1.2 patch (~12MB), which will fix some of these problems.

These suggestions are not guaranteed to work, and nor are they official. They are simply a collection of common problems and possible fixes suggested by forum members. There is a patch in the works, which we all hope will fix a lot of problems, but in the meantime you can give these suggestions a go. I’m no techie (and I don't even have the full game yet) so feel free to post corrections or further suggestions in this thread.

Some of these tweaks require you to alter some .ini files; namely, the default.ini file in the DXIW\System folder, and the user.ini file in the My Documents\Deus Ex – Invisible War folder. It’s a good idea to back these files up before altering them: just copy and paste the file to a different location on your hard drive, and if something goes wrong, just copy-paste the original file back. To open these files, use Notepad or Wordpad. Wordpad is probably best because Notepad can mess up the layout.
  • First of all, you’ve heard this a million times before, but update your drivers! Get the latest drivers for your video card, sound card, motherboard, get the latest firmware for your CD/DVD-ROM, and download the latest version of DirectX (not the debug version).

Slow performance
  • One thing everyone should definitely do is fix the mouse lag. Open up default.ini and find the line
    MouseLagThreshold=75
Change the 75 to a 0 and your mouse should be much more responsive.
  • Read through Eleazar’s tweak guide and try some of those tips.
  • Read through this tweak guide at the Ion Storm forums and try some of the tips there.
  • Download a DX:IW tweaker program. You can find links for them in those two tweak guides.
  • A tweak that should help performance for everyone is the cache size. Open default.ini and find the line
    CacheSizeMegs=1
Change the 1 to 16 or 32. You probably won’t notice much difference above 32.
  • Windows XP users: several members have reported much improved performance when running the game in Windows 2000 compatibility mode. Create a shortcut to DX2.exe on the desktop, right-click it, go to Properties>Compatiblity, and select Win2000 mode. Run the game from that shortcut.
  • If you have a gamepad or joystick connected to your computer, try removing it before playing. It might improve performance.
  • KR_Dragon suggested this tip concerning audio systems:
    Quote:
Okay, this might work for you guys... I was poking around in the demo's .ini file and found something interesting. DX:IW is initializing two seperate audio subsystems which may be the cause for performance degredation... Hehe, its the XBox audio subsystem at that.... Go into the [Engine.Engine] group and find this line, put a comma at the beginning of it like so.... The openAL audio system should be the only one enabled.

    ;AudioDevice__x=XBoxAudio.XboxAudioSubsystem
  • Set your video card’s antialiasing setting to ‘Application’ (all the way to the left) and set anisotropic filtering to Off. You can control AA from within the game. To change these settings, right-click your desktop, click Properties, click the Settings tab, click the Advanced button, then click your video card’s tab.
  • In direct contradiction to this (welcome to the world of computers), it might help performance to set your video card’s AA and anisotropic filtering settings to 2X. Who knows.

Crashes
  • The Windows 2000 compatibility tweak can help with crashes too.
  • If the game is crashing while you’re loading it, and/or maps take a long time to load and the game eventually crashes, try updating your CD/DVD-ROM firmware from the manufacturer’s website. The problem might be related to disc access times.
  • Run Windows at the same resolution you’re running the game at. For example, if you’re running the game at 800x600, put your Windows resolution at 800x600.
  • Similarly, if your game is crashing when you load saves, try changing the menu resolution when you first start the game. It defaults to 640x480 on startup, so, for example, if you saved the game at 800x600 resolution, change the resolution to 800x600 before loading a save.
  • You can try running the game in debug mode. This will increase loading times, but may help stability. For instructions about this, see this forum thread.
  • Some players have had problems when installing the game to a custom directory. Try installing the game to the installer’s default directory.
  • If all else fails, you try holding down the escape key during level loads. This has worked for some people, though obviously it’s not ideal.
  • If you receive an error message saying Your PC doesn’t have enough free space to start a new game, it may be because you’ve changed the location of the My Documents folder. Move it back to the original location and try again.

If your My Documents folder must be shared, you can (sort of) get around it by disabling sharing, loading the game, and creating a few saves. You will then be able to overwrite those saves and use the quicksave even if your My Docs is shared. You just won't be able to create new saves.

Other problems

Error messages with the DVD version
If you're getting messages like 'conflict with disc emulator software' or 'insert original disc, not a backup', etc, try downloading this new .exe file, which might help.

Game freezing with Radeon 9600 cards
Take a look at this thread.

Slow, stuttering intro and endgame movies
Download the RAD Video Tools, which let you watch the .bik video files in Windows. (Thanks grommit.)

Dotty grey pixels on Radeon cards:
This seems to be caused by a combination of Bloom and Multisampling. Turn off one setting or the other and it should help. Hopefully this will be fixed in future ATI drivers updates.

Geforce cards and Bloom effect:
There may be a problem with the Bloom effect with some Nvidia drivers. Updating the drivers to the latest version should fix the problem.

Alt-tabbing during level loads
If this is happening to you, and you are running Windows XP, run the game in Win 2000 compatability mode.

Mouse not working in menus
Several people have solved this problem by downloading the latest drivers for their video card.

Installion errors:
Try the suggestion in this thread.

Another possibility is this fix discovered by forum member Jovena:
Quote:
use your 'Run" option in the start menu and enter this:
msconfig

click on startup now click disable all.

I re-selected my startup for my wireless internet connection so that it would be the only thing still in my startup menu. You may need to do this as well if you have Internet issues.
I am running WinXp and this procedure does not turn off any critical programs.
3D sound fix
nRaecheR on the Ion Storm forums has made a 3D sound .dll file to enable surround sound on Audigy and other sound cards. Find information and instructions in this thread.

Surround sound with nForce motherboards:
This seems to be a problem with the nForce drivers. Downloading the beta 3.75 audio drivers may fix the problem. These drivers are not official and you use them at your own risk! Check this thread for more information about them.

Try to keep this thread clean. If you have a problem and need some help, post in a different thread or start a new one. Keep this thread for more suggestions (or corrections).

No, neither of those settings has any effect on the grey pixel problem. It's actually Shadows; you have to turn Shadows all the way Off and the problem will go away. It will probably be a while before ATI fixes the problem (if they ever do), as they haven't even officially released the 3.10 drivers yet and they don't fix the problem.

Side effects: Turning off Shadows also greatly increases performance, but of course the game would look cooler with them on (if they worked properly on ATI cards that is).

Other notes: Turning off Bloom may still be a good idea on Radeons; many people have reported that Bloom causes certain areas of the game to be blindingly bright. My suggestion would be to try it both ways and see which you like better. I don't see much (if any) performance difference between having Bloom enabled and disabled.

If you have a Radeon 9600 Pro video card and the game is locking up, see this thread.

About the gray square problem on ATi cards..
I have a Radeon 9700. I'm getting this problem by setting resolution to 1280x1024 (no mather if bloom is on or multisampling >1x). I'm running the game smooth at 1024x768 with bloom off and multisampling at 4x. Or 1024x768 with bloom on and multisampling at 1x.

Using Omega Drivers version 24.96c btw.

Like I said, go to the second page of video options and set shadows all the way to off. It sucks to have to turn them off, but right now it's the only way to eliminate the problem.

Default Mouse problems

Alright, odd as it is my mouse will not work in the menus of the game. It functions beautifully for steering and looking but no menus. Standard microsoft laser mouse.

This makes the patch near useless to me since I can no longer drop items or install biomods.

No problem. I'm running the game at 1280x1024 with bloom and AA off. Btw.. WTF is bloom? Pixeldoubling? It sucks imho. Makes the game look like a bad pornmovie :P (like with a blur-filter).
Shadow effects are great, so I have to have them on!

maedox: Bloom is some kind of enhanced lighting effect I guess. It's supposed to make light sources "glow" or something. I think the shadows make the game look a lot better too, but I can't stand the grey pixels all over my screen so I have to turn them off. You've got more patience with bugs than I do I guess

Rabid Badger:
You might want to try messing with options like CaptureMouse and UseDirectDraw in your Default.ini file. I seem to remember those having an effect on the mouse cursor in DX/Unreal/UT games.

Didn't work Hunter, but thanks regardless. I'll have to hope something gets fixed in an upcoming patch I guess.

I meant that I don't get those grey pixels when I'm disabling bloom and AA
I can't stand them either.

Okay then, I guess for some people it's Bloom and AA that cause the grey pixels, and for others it's Shadows.

maedox: Do you know what Catalyst version your Omega drivers are based on?

My guess then is that for Cat 3.9 you have to turn off Bloom and AA, and for Cat 3.10 (hotfix and final/official/WHQL) you have to turn off shadows *instead*. Just a guess though.

If you cannot get the smartgart to work uninstall your current drivers and install the omega or dna. Omega just got done updating so they are now the best to my liking. Since you have a 9600 I recommend going for performance settings. Unless you have a good processor and are getting any pause ups, then go for quality. If you want a good mix of both get the DNA. This will fix that nasty smartgart problem because it gets rid of it. Smartgart has been known to create slow downs, as well as the ATI control panel. If you aren't sure about modded drivers read my Easy As Cake tweak guide, it explains why there is nothing to worry about. If you just don't want to do this, then give ATI tech support a call or visit their forums. This is not a tech support forum for ATI. So, I doubt the devs will answer your pleas. With things like this, unless there is a statement from ATI on how to fix the problem. They really can't tell you what to do, due to liability issues. Also try getting 3.10 drivers, that just might fix the problem, but I suggest the modified ones. Unless you know how to tweak everything yourself. I know how to tweak everything myself but I still use modified.

Default grey dots/////modified 3.10 drivers

Does anyone have a link to some modified 3.10 drivers that will let this game work smooth at at least 1024 without the fricken grey dot problem? I spend $ on at 9800pro 256 and would think that I can play it with the shadows on and the bloom(whatever that crap is) on as well. as far as ATI tech support I have not been able to get any kind of resolution (no pun intended) to this grey dot problem, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I have the same problem. I have a Vicious PC with a logitech trackball and radeon 9700 video card.

Were you able to figure out how to fix this. Of course the patch makes it unplayable.

Default Another possible crash fix.

I had issues even getting the game to run without crashing. Tried everything I could think of then finally accidently found the problem.

I have nvidia stereo drivers installed(and used with the original DE). Normally these are inactive and have to be turned on by hotkey to play a game in "3d". Apparently IW won't even accept simply NOT playing in stereo. I had to disable the stereo drivers in order to get the game to play, even in 2d.

I am not sure WHY this conflict exists. Especially since I started playing DE cause it came with the stereo glasses as an example of a good game to use them on.

A tweak that should help performance for everyone is the cache size. Open default.ini and find the line
CacheSizeMegs=1
Change the 1 to 16 or 32. You probably won’t notice much difference above 32.
If this is better, why is it not the default setting? Or in the patch?

The 1.1 patch kept me from returning the game. It was totally unplayable out of the box at 640x480. I can play the game now at 800x600....very low settings and very poor performance. I bought the game based on screenshots that I saw on a web site.

If I turned up my resolution that high with this game...it would only be a screenshot.
