Thanks!
Very satisfied indeed.... and also with the runner-up choice.

Hey guys I made an awesome new animation but I can't show it to you because:

-GIF only supports 256 colors and the animation looks dreadful because of the shadowy nature of the original color scheme.
-The GIF image is 15MB ie. a billion times larger than what the quality is.
-The video is in a pillarbox format that doesn't fit in a Youtube screen properly.
-The video is a loop so even if it would fit in Youtube, Youtube doesn't have a loop option.
-I assume that forums like this don't support Flash content with an in-built looping player that plays FLV video.

EDIT: Trying an APNG animation now...

EDIT 2: APNG works fine but no image hosting site seems to accept an 18MB file.

I wish there was a JPEG compressed animated image format available. Now those of you who have slow internet speeds will see a choppy image changing every few seconds or so until it has downloaded all 200 frames.
ANIMATION STARTS HERE (text for those who can't view the image)

ANIMATION ENDS HERE

A little perspective as to how much pointless extra work I put in it. The bracers are actually the same ones that Garrett wears in Thief III (Not Deadly Shadows). Though one can see the same bracers in the TDS ingame cutscenes that use the old, more canon-friendly Garrett model. And the bow is kinda like the one that can be seen in the Thief 4 trailer that EM refused to let exist. Obviously I can't depict it accurately because of the horrible quality of the leaked footage.

If I had enough money I would hire you to this kind of stuff for me all day long, Platinum. Are you some sort of professional?

I think I just... wow... I don't really know how to express how *** awesome that is.

With regards to the bow, there's more metal than wood.

There's a composite. It appears that there are 2 gears in the front, and that the limbs have a split in the end to allow them to fall off of the gears once they've moved the limbs in place. They seem to deploy the first half of the limb where there's a jagged outcropping that causes the second portion of the limb to fall on to the gears again. it's interesting though not entirely necessary really...

The science is obviously not exact, as the way they have it deploy, it's clear it would not be collapsed so easily.

There are pulleys to either end, it's compound bow, but they seem to have forgotten the 3rd string (the bow string) and just made it so the cables are also the bowstring xD silly people

They could bother to at least make it a functional compound bow though.

No. All my skills are entirely inapplicable in anything that pays money, as far as I know. I mean, who in their right mind would want to commission artwork made using Paint? I've spent 4 years in university, and I still haven't found any work on my field where the things I've learned in school are remotely enough. I guess I'll either die as a poor artist, or live long enough to see myself become a bum.

It's not a compound bow. It's a steampunk mechanical tech-bow, and it has nothing to do with compound mechanics. The idea of a compound bow is to increase the power of pulling the string by using pulleys. The idea of the Thief 4 bow is that it can fold and fit in a smaller space. It's a bow that's more than just a stick and a string, but it's not a compound bow.

The way the string is designed doesn't really make sense then - the only purpose I can think of it having would be if those are actually 2 REELS and it is then reeling in the string with springs to keep it taught and not getting caught on junk while it's collapsed - and even then it doesn't need the double string bit to accomplish that...

I interpreted it as some sort of folding and very modern looking composite bow when I saw it. Both because of the strings and the shape, although looking closely I can't spot any cams. The shape of the bow means it has to be a compound bow for it to work though. A traditional bow is much straighter, when you pull the string the limbs are bent backwards. Only on a compound bow can the limbs be horizontal because the pulley system redirects the force from the bowstring to the horizontal direction so the limbs will be bent even if horizontal (although they don't have to be horizontal on compound bows, there are many variants).

extremely horizontal limbs on compound bow

traditional longbow

With all the latest rumors and delays about "Thief 4", Master-Thief Garrett decided to visit the Thievious universe for some quick R&R...

Thanks for posting.
All the screenies look more delicious than cook's iced cakes and buns.

Added update to thread title.

Nope, just an examination of a real compound bow.

The traditional bow is a long way better.

Do you mean the traditional bow LOOKS better?
The compound bow might provide better precision though.

Yep, the advantage to the pully system is it allows you to draw the bow and hold the bow at a lower weight, while still firing with all the force the bow would normally have otherwise. The lower hold weight means you can aim longer, have a steadier hand, and maybe even increase the poundage above what you'd normally use.

A compound bow with the same draw weight is superior in every way to a long bow.

Long bows are only better if you want a really insanely high draw weight. I've never heard of a 200 lb pull compound at least...
