Don't know if this has been asked, but will there be a novel for the release of the game same as the Deus Ex: HR release. How much would fans want this?
For me game novels have been improving and would buy such a novel just to learn more of the City. The answer is probably a simple YES |

There is already some really good fan written novels and stories out there: http://thief-thecircle.com/fanworks/ Under the novels section you will find correspondence of thieves which is basically an amazingly well written epic set in the Thief universe. There are probably a few other good stories there as well but none pulled me in like correspondance. The ancient blades trilogy by David Chandler is also a good set of books to check out, it's not the same universe but it is set around a thief character and has the same gritty/mature feel as the thief series.

I would so much love an animated (hand-drawn!) series in the thief universe but a thief novel would be nice as well.

Whoever writes it for commercial release would have to pay royalties to EM. Considering that royalties are what he author lives on for the most part, I doubt paying a large percentage of it to someone else who owns the rights to the main character would sit well with them. On that score, I doubt you'd be looking at a well known author.

The wonderful Mr James Swallow wrote a novel for EM's "Deus Ex: Human Revolution". It was a successful venture for both parties.

Hmmm, as long as its well written, and doesnt introduce too much lore on its own, I think I would be down for a Thief novel. Ideally a novel that tells the story of Garrets days as an orphant, and his keeper training.

Until then, I'd like to ask opinions about existing novels that are similar to Thief.
I think Brent Weeks is very much like R. A. Salvatore, I never liked his Shadow-trilogy. Too action-gamey. I recommend the Mistborn-series by Brandon Sanderson and the Locke Lamora-books by Scott Lynch though. I'm looking forward to read Among Thieves, but I'm not sure if it's any good. Anyone? Or anything similar? |

Is the Mistborn series any good? I'm looking to get hooked on a new fantasy novel series now that I'm finished with Glen Cooks Black Company series and Abercrombies First Law.

As for the characters, it's a bit naive and idealistic, but it's not distracting. Different than the mentioned grittier series. But still one of the best of the last decade. I'm looking forward to discuss the similarities with Thief, because there are many. But no one I know of knows both series ![]() (I'm reading The First Law right now by the way )

![]() But i think something in the style of "The dark Tower - Stephen King" - Comics would fit the Thief Story perfectly. If you guys don't know what iam talking about, please google for some pictures! The style these comics use is just sooooo dark and athmospheric! |

A Thief novel might actually be very good, if it's written well enough. It'd certainly be interesting, especially if it contains additional details on setting and lore.

I want a Thief game! After that, we can start to talk about a novel.

I'd like a Thief book, but to be honest I'm not interested in a novel (as in a novel about one of Garrett's missions, or something like that).
I'd like to learn more about the pagans, keepers and "Hammer-heads" ![]() In others words, learn more about the Thief World/Universe. So lets say, for example, a book divided in 3 main characters: A pagan, a Hammerite and a Keeper. And each tells a story of themselves and about their cult (and also how they view the others). That'd be nice ^^ |

But, otherwise, if not a novel, then maybe a guidebook would be good. All the information is already on the wiki and forums so all someone has to do, is put it together nicelly. Things like general facts, backstories, maps, screenshots or concept art. Or maybe the novel and guidebook could be integrated together. As you said, it could be written from the perpective of someone in the different factions, as a log or diary, with sketches and such. |

I'd be very interested in a Thief novel. World-building stuff (especially when well written) is always good.

A thief novel would be a good idea, and as long as it had any author other than Brent Weeks, Steven Erikson, Rick Riordan, or Christopher Paolini, I'd buy it.
I'd actually like to see a female write a thief novel, it'd bring a fresh new perspective that the franchise so desperately needs. Here's the problem, you have True Fans and you have fanatics. The True Fans would be happy with just about anything well written, the fanatics would pick it apart. They'd be complaining about minute things like, "Garrett would never do or say that" or "This event wasn't supposed to happen until after that event" or "The author's knowledge of Keeper history is incorrect" blah, blah, blah. Nonetheless, I'd like to see a thief novel. I can think of no other authors on the planet that could pull it off than R.A Salvatore or the Weis/Hickman team And there you have it.

LOL what? No seriously...what?
On another note, I actually enjoyed The Night Angel Trilogy. It's the first series I can remember in recent history that I bothered to finish so that says something. The books are slow paced yes and some parts drag, yes but overall I enjoyed them. Weis and Hickman? While yes their writing has improved somewhat, the original dragonlance novels (chronicles) was a mess. I didn't like the overall plot or how it was structured but what kept me interested enough was the characters. Legends being my fav of them all. Yet I don't see them writing a novel based on this universe. I haven't read any of R.A. Salvatore's work but I'd like to. I've heard good things. And yes I'd read a novel based in the Thief world. Brosius is a singer. That's her thing. Ok, so you wanna call her a musician? I'll give you that. As an author of a thief novel......gimme a break.

You clearly don't know much about Terri. She is already an excellent writer... so she is perfectly capable of writing a Thief novel.
