HELP HELP HELP!!!
I haven't gotten into Facebook yet, for a long list of reasons. For a while now I've been getting friend request. I didn't really think about it. I got email from an online friend today asking how come I didn't "friend" him. I told him I didn't have a Facebook page. He said "yes you do, I'm looking at it right now." WHA???????? I NEVER signed up, nor do I have any sign up info in my email, spam, junk or otherwise. But apparently I do, I just went there, reset my password. Looked around and saw nothing indicating anyone, including me, had ever been there. I wanted to find out when "my" account was activated and why I had an account in the first place. It seems there is no place to get help there or ask questions unless your question fits a specific type of request. There isn't even a help forum to ask general account information. I was a little iffy about Facebook before but now I REALLY HATE IT! ![]() Is there anyone here with some Facebook smarts? Is there some way I could have been automatically signed up? How could I find out if someone else signed me up?

....because FACEBOOK is a hacker's paradise !
The big thing a hacker will do is clone somebody's identity. That place is bad news.

Hmm. Well, as far as I know, anyone can make an account with any name they choose, but if you are getting email from your Facebook account then you have control over the account (unless someone else has access to your email). I don't think you can get "automatically" signed up. I suppose someone who knows your email address could create the Facebook account, but then you should have received the email that the account was created. Maybe it slipped by you, as you mention you didn't really think about the Facebook emails. You can delete your Facebook account if you want (somewhere in Account Settings), or check it out and post what you had for breakfast lol.

I'd also suggest you try and report this individual for impersonation as well.
There's a link for that.

I can't say I'm glowing about their report feature. My dad was getting emails from Facebook calling him by some other name, saying "Welcome back [other account name]! You have pending friend requests." We reported this as either Facebook is the problem sending this info to the wrong email address, or that this person has somehow hacked into my dad's email. Their reply was only that they can't find this person has done anything wrong, so our ability to report it in the future might be limited... No reason why this happened. The irony is that it happened again yesterday. I took a screenshot of the email and sent that in a pretty scathing (still civil) reply back, telling them this isn't our imagination, now fix it, let us know what the problem is, and don't threaten us that we can't report it again if it continues to happen, please.
We haven't heard back yet.

wow, somehow I'm not surprised. My wife, my 17 and 11 year old sons have Facebook accounts, yet I'm real leery of signing up or creating one.

The key for facebook or anything online, really, is never write anything you don't want everyone else to know.

The weird thing is, it doesn't look like anything was done with my page. I don't see any activity.
How does the Facebook email thing work? Maybe someone was using it? But if I'm right, you can't set up an account without confirming your email, correct?

I know there's at least one other person who has the same name as me (on facebook), but other than that I haven't had any problems. Facebook has been known to be a pain in the butt sometimes when it comes to accounts and "pages" as in the past they've done stuff without notice and don't notify the creator of the account/page of anything. I put little info on facebook, and some of the info I lie about. If you know me in-person then you know my real birthday. Facebook book will send you an email for pretty much every bit of activity that is related to your account in any way unless you turn it off. If you haven't made an account then you might get email invites but I can't think of anything else. I don't really know facebook that well to be honest though.

All people do is just click on random names to be "friends" and try to get as many as they can. It's ridiculous. You don't even know those people or they you.

That's why I only friend people I've met in-person. Otherwise, you don't get friended on facebook. I've actually had a bunch of people want to friend me, so I just caved (since I became a mod on a forum I visit and they wanted a facebook presence from me) and made a dummy account for them to spam that has nothing to do with my "real" account.
Yes, I'm not quite sure what I was thinking when I made a second facebook account. I don't like facebook at the best of times. :P

Blowhard, is it possible you might have got as far as signing up some time in the past and then decided against it but maybe forgot about it until now? If so, it would definitely explain why there's a basic page there with nothing on it and why the notifications are being sent to your email. You wouldn't get any notifications unless something happened which is why you only received news when a friend request appeared.
It just seems a little strange to me that somebody else would set up an account in your name using your email address which would ultimately prevent them from using it because I'm pretty sure you have to activate it via your email? I have Facebook and have never had problems with hackers or strangers trying to friend me because I only use it to interact with family and friends, none of which know what my password is. As long as you have a good password that nobody can guess and you don't post private information about yourself, Facebook is harmless. To be really honest, Facebook is only as evil as the stupidity of the person using it. I agree with Chip5541 - don't post any private information and then nobody will know your private information including Facebook. There are privacy settings to prevent people you don't know from finding you, messaging you or friending you and at the end of the day it's up to you to click 'accept' or 'ignore'.

Exactly. If people post too much personal informaton on thier social network accounts, then they are taking a risk for people to hack, steal ,or do something else bad.

One thing I don't like about Facebook.....lets say you post a pic on your page and have your privacy setting to where only friends can view said pic, all should be great right? Nope, if your friends do not have the same privacy settings than anyone can see that pic, when they are on your friends page.

![]() An aside: I'm REALLY disappointing in one of my friends who I though was gentle and kind only to see a link posted to the most gawd-awful right wing political BS hate speech. I really wish there was a way to dislike something on Facebook. Or even better, a "hate" button! I also wish I could ban all political discussions by my friends but I don't know how

Interestingly, it's harder than it's stated to be. When you hover your mouse curser over their posts, you'll see a little down arrow on the right of them that will appear. If you click that, a menu tree opens under it, where you can unsubscribe from their posts (it will ask all posts, or give you a selection of types you can choose from). It says unsubscribe from them, but it means their posts.
However ... it doesn't really seem to work. I've tried it on many occasions ... only to still see the same peoples' posts let through.

There was actually an app you could download that added a dislike button, but it turned out to be a virus. :x
I have 97 applications blocked, by the way. I'm going to have a big celebration when I hit 100.

For those who use facebook, you better check your profile settings, as facebook decided to replace the address you entered with an @facebook.com address:
