Me?
If so thank you. I wanted it to be fair even though as an opinion it's bound to be biased. The Thief series has a zealous following, to the point of them being both obnoxious as well as wonderful, something shared by the Fallout series. The bile that got directed towards Fallout 3 in particular. Personally I found it average and would have preferred to have seen what would have came from the Van Buren project being made. It didn't stop me replaying Fallout 1 + 2 though. There's so much stomping of feet though regarding sequels and reboots though that it really grows tiresome. I'm really looking forward to seeing what EMontreal come up with and if they have a new lead character, new factions etc then I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I don't have to buy the end product, I can wait and see what peoples reception towards it is then make a purchase decision. I was highly sceptical of how Human Revolution would be. The shackling of the game to steamworks meant I wasn't going to buy it at full price. I instead waited till it was at a reasonable to me price before buying. A rarity in itself as I usually will simply ignore steamworks shackled products. I absolutely loved HR though and that surprised me. Happily surprised me. If people are interested in seeing the headache in getting the roles of customers and fans confused, their expectations and entitlements just check out the whole mess regarding Mass Effect 3. As a customer you were falsely marketed towards as a fan you were all the more easily taken advantage of due to your emotional investment. As a true/hardcore fan you were bent over a barrel. Best of luck to EMontreal with Thief 4. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing what you make. I know I've got possibly too high a set of hopes due to how much I admired the art design in DX:HR but I reckon you can pull it off.An optimistic customer. ![]() This needed a windmill. |

It's a purely fabricated term who's purpose is to fracture fanbases. You can see this behavior everywhere, not just in fanbases.
There's no such thing as a true fan.

For me a true fan is someone whose life was altered through the game. One who dwelled so deeply in it's atmosphere and merged with it mind body and soul. One who became totally present and lost all sense of time and space while playing the game. Such spiritual states never last long but they produce a great sense of bliss and well being to the player. But that is just me, something inside me enjoys the night sky deeply.
Second. Obsession. One starts to act talk and behave as the character from the game. Yes I stole stuff and wanted to become a thief when I was young. I made lock pics and did all sorts of crazy stuff..but nothing that won't let me sleep at night

Agreed. You are either a fan or not, period. That is all. This is really just a joke thread, made by someone who likes to self-aggrandize.

People don't measure "true fan" in any way other than by personal involvement regarding something. Most people try to do it by money and collection, while the true thing is that they're "true fans" of collection, rather than the game. Sometimes it's even both, however collecting games, special editions etc is not a portray of "true fan" of the game. It may be an indicator, though. "True fan" is basically a person with high dedicatory tendencies, as stated before, and not someone who's trying to imply the impossible by portraying personal involvement and referring to the game as "best game ever made". That's not being a "true fan", that's a typical Funboyism, often made by people who're trying to personalize themselves with the game or a certain group of people, for personal benefits. Usually it's about being "intelligent" or striving towards it. True fan is someone who actually understands the message of the game and tries to find thing which are not obvious or are not "by the lore" implemented. True fan is someone who sees even the things that the creators forgot to notice. Basically, "true fan" is anyone with either high understanding or high love towards the game. For those who wonder how come those who buy and collect are "not true fans of the game series" - simply put, anyone can buy the game, but that doesn't make them fans of it. They simply contribute to the company that published it, nothing more. |

I think contrarian is confused as he's never received an infraction for the liberal use of the phrase, as he states.

Sweet bridgette above this thread is still going. Just a simple thought from a simple mind. Not a single person in the world can tell you if you are or are not a true fan. This is something you choose in the silence of your own mind (or above the noise of dozens of gerbils singer in my case). Am I a true fan of those little green peas or of liver? Not so sadly the answer is a unqualified NO. Am I a true fan of Thief? That's an answer that totally and completely belong to me.

HAHAHA DDA. I can understand that, however Here we've developed more than simply a forum about a game. This only my opinion but, it seems we've developed a community with some shared interests and some widely ranging viewpoints. (mine seems to range wildly as the hours grows later). Many of the discussions give me new views or ways of thinking about various issues that I wouldn't noramlly have. I would truly miss that if it suddenly went away. And my final point (I know, that's a blatant lie) is that I'm sure I'm not the only one who would miss the gentle wisdom that helps shape our conversations and the firm smacking around we need from time to time to keep us in line that we get from our wonderful and Woodsie moderator, Viktoria.. (now there's some good old fashioned sucking up)

PS. The old fashioned sucking up is allowed, lol. ![]() Hehe... but on a serious note. It is true that this forum, our community, is what each and every one of us make it... and its perfectly fine to hold different opinions just so long as we share them, and/or argue against them, with politeness and respect. It's that simple.
