Default New Patch, broken game (cannot start game)

83 hours happily played (not done with the game yet - spent a fair bit of time afk), and I log on today after months of no technical blips and then....bam. Minor patch. Broken.

I can't get the game to start! I try opening it through steam, my desktop shortcut, try verifying game files, restart the computer, run first time setup again...nothin'. What can I do to try and get the game started now besides those things? [Kind of sad because this is my last break for months, and it ends Monday...)

One of my apparently many, updated crash logs (that I just now found in the game directory):

DXDiag (NOTE: Due to the silly new power saving thing for laptops on nVidia chipsets, my computer usually never sees my real graphics card come up, even in these dxdiag's. It is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M):

EDIT: If anyone knows how to get the game to run with the next-to-latest patch (i.e., the latest version of the game as of a day or two ago), please let me know!

As you are on Win7, you should be able to revert the changes by using Windows' auto-backup system.
Find the folder where DX:HR is installed (within your Steam folder), right click on it and choose "revert to previous version" (or something similar, I don't know the exact phrase).
This should let you revert it back to the old version. Then make a backup of the DX folder, just in case.
Alternatively, if you have an older backup of the folder you should be able to use this.

That method worked pretty well with Skyrim, hope it helps here, too.

I'm having the same issue. I purchased this game from steam 2 days ago and got to play 12 hours but the latest update crashes the game on startup. I tried reverting to a previous version but that still doesn't work.

I am currently running on Win7 premium with a Nvidia Geforce GT 540m and everything has been updated.

We are seeing some crashes coming in that are the result of crashes in (outdated) Nvidia drivers. However, Nvidia has tested this latest patch with their current drivers succesfully.

The latest release WHQL drivers for are 301.42. Please ensure those are what you are using.

We are working with Nvidia to see if there is anything else we can do.

Awesome and great to know, so thank you, but...I have a Dell Alienware laptop, and their drivers and downloads page (I'm looking at http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19 ) only ever allows for *their* versions of drivers...Which are all made in 2011. I do have those as the latest.

My old Dell laptop never allowed me to get drivers from anyone except them. Is it even safe to attempt to install drivers from nVidia's site for Dell laptops? If you think I should, then I'll try...

In principle it should work, I think.
BUT, often the "vanilla" drivers won't install on laptops, you might have to edit some file of the drivers.
It shouldn't be to hard, but I can't help you with that.

Exactly, I think that's what you need to do. But how do you do it?

I have the same problem with the game.

I can chose new(er) drivers from the nVidia page, but the latest version for my Quadro 4000M is 296.70.

Is there ANY way to UNPATCH the game?

That would solve the problem at its core because BEFORE the patch I never had any problems at all!

Hi,

I am also using a notebook, this one running the NVS 4200M NVIDIA chip. The latest supported drivers from my OEM are 276.58. Is there any solution for people running that? The game played fine before the patch, now everytime I try to open it I get a Windows 7 error pop up saying "Deus Ex: Human revolution had to close." I've updated all my drivers, rebooted the machine, and verified the game cache but the problem persists.

Jesus, though...Nixxes and/or Eidos, for all of us who are suddenly unable to run the game, can you at least say you're looking into patching a fix? No need to say it's actually coming if you can't...(if so, I might just wait :P )

...yeah that really kinda discourages me from wanting to try forcing non-dell drivers on the laptop...

Eidos...? Any community guy...? Please?

I'm not Ratford, but for what it's worth I have recently updated to 276.58, which, according to the NVIDIA Control Panel on my machine is the latest update available for my laptop.

Hey Nixxes I don't mean to jump on you for posting here again, but I really do just want to ask - should I be holding my breath for another patch to fix this one? Or go ahead with the potentially computer-breaking procedure to try and get the game to run? (really - I just want to know - are you guys looking into a hotfix at all, or anything that could potentially come out within the next few weeks?)

We are in discussion with Nvidia about this. I would not rule out that we would release an update for this, but considering that this is ultimately a driver crash we may rely on driver updates to fix it.

We do recommend installing the latest driver from Nvidia on your laptop though, but only if it installs without any additional steps. Nvidia is supporting more and more laptops with their driver releases directly.

Can you let us know the specific laptop model, the type of Nvidia hardware included in it, and the latest driver Dell has available for it?

Absolutely sir - my many thanks for the response! Here is the stuff:

Computer: Alienware M17XR3
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M (with an integrated 'Intel(R) HD Graphics Family' card as well that gets shut off whenever it wants to do anything video intensive, of course)
DRIVERS: 269.03 [Note: These are the latest drivers available from Dell's website, released around August 1st, 2011 they say. I've had them ever since I got this laptop...and I'm stuck with them :P ]

Until this matter is resolved, of course - I am *more* than happy to hear any questions or comments you have of course, sir Especially given how the official tech support email method has seen a delay of about a week now, in terms of them getting back to me after my response to their help...

Relayed this information to NVidia, and you should be able to install this driver just fine, without any special tricks:

Please let us know how that goes.

Sorry for the delayed response - started my first summer classes since I started this thread, and they just heated up. But! I finally got to updating my drivers today, backing stuff up etc, ready to go as per your advice...and I'm astonished o.o It WORKED!! Just like that Deus Ex plays perfectly again. Nixxes you don't know just how MUCH I appreciate being able to update my drivers straight from their site like that!!

In thanks for your help, I'll tell you my story if you'd like lol. My last laptop, bought in 2009 (replaced by this one 2 yrs later) simply *could not* get updated drivers! Alienware stopped supporting the laptop a month after I got it thanks to the Dell merger, so no new drivers from them, and nVidia.com's drivers wouldnt work (tried literally over a dozen), various forums wouldn't help, and even Alienware itself tried to modify nVidia drivers to work just for *me*...and that wouldn't work! Sometimes along the way, some really funky stuff happened to that laptop...But the tragedy was that its hardware was so good that even *today* it could run Deus Ex well and all that...but a game I had played absolutely required the drivers after a game update, much like Deus Ex here now. That really sucked, clearly. Anyway that's why I replaced it with this one, because I had to!

And now you telling me that for the first time in my existence, I have a laptop that will actually update with extreme ease, without even needing to uninstall my previous drivers now...? (obviously I'm years out of the driver update loop lol - but I used to deal with it it all the time) ...it's just insane!!! And I have you to thank for the peace of mind XD Thank you!!

Hi,

Do you know if there are any updated drivers for the NVS 4200M that would work with the post-patch version?

If that's an nVidia card, check this man: http://www.geforce.com/drivers

FGlad to hear everything is working ok for you now netsurfer! It is indeed great to see Nvidia supports these notebooks directly now.

Fiesole, the link posted above has support for recent (DX10+) Quadro NVS GPUs as well, which should include yours as well. So downloading and installer the same driver should work for you.

Nixxes and Netsurfer733, I used the site to upgrade to 296.70 and everything appears to be working again, thanks.
