Exclamation Thief I and Thief II: info please.

Hi! This is my first thread. I played few years ago Thief: Deadly Shadows and was a great game. Now i want to buy Thief I and Thief II, but I have a question:

- The language is only in english? (I'm Italian)
- Both games have subtitles in italian or only in english?

Anyway, if this games are only in english isn't a problem... I learn english better.

No need to open a new thread for a question - you can always go to the Tavern to ask a question like that - it will be probably moved anyway.

Now, I don't think the first two Thief games got any localizations whatsoever. I live in the right middle of Europe, I've been many times in Italy, and I have Thief games from two different countries, neither was subtitled or dubbed. (Germans did it).

And I believe the first two Thief games are no longer available in retail version - if you can find them, it's simple, you just check them out. But if you order internationally, from eBay, from game.co.uk or from Zavvi - you'll get the english version.

You should practice english, anyway, it's worth it.

The original Thief games do have localization. Every German player insists on playing all games in German despite how weird it seems. I don't know about Italian though.

But they don't have subtitles. I don't think the Dark Engine supported those.

However, when I started playing Thief 1, I was 10 years old. I wasn't very good in English back then either. But I still finished the game regardless. -Well not exactly. I got to the end of Haunted Cathedral and failed to continue because of The Eye's cryptic clues. I had no idea what "grotto" or "pedestal" or "illuminate" meant.

Oh, and about the original games. They don't seem to be very compatible with modern machines. There are fanmade patches to fix compatibility issues like Tafferpatcher for Thief 2. ...And instructions on how to install various fixes for Thief Gold.

Ok. I decided to buy Thief I and Thief II. I finded this games on Amazon.it (the special edition with all 3 chapters of the Thief series).
Two years ago I played Arx Fatalis and wasn't very compatible but when I used Dual Core Optimizer I played it perfectly.

The fanmade fixes that I have allow me to play both games fine even with my quadcore pc. I haven't run into any problems I think. Even the widescreen resolution works.

On a side note, if you want to play older titles and you are not against digital distribution, just buy from gog.com - their games are optimized, DRM-free and cheap, and for Thief, they even posted a mod spotlight.

I'm not a great fan of digital delivery. However, on gog.com Thief I cost 9,99€ and Thief II cost 9,99€.

Thief I + Thief II = 19,98€ in digital delivery.

I finded both games approximately at 8,00€. I saving more than 10€.

It's in USD not in €. Even better, you know. There are no regional restrictions as seen on Steam. - I'm not saying digital is cheaper or better, but it is convenient. It's instant and it is working properly. True, I have boxed copies, but I rarely use CDs anymore.

The GOG versions are also (ideally) kept up to date so that they'll run on your systems, and if you're having trouble, a quick visit to the game's forum on GOG is all you need to find ways to set the problems right.

Yes, 19,98€ are 15,65$. I love boxed copies, book of paper (not eBook) and vinyl discs... and I have only 22.

Consider that I am Italian and in my country internet is more slower than a snail.

Speaking of boxes... I was stupid enough to get my original huge Thief 2 box all dirty and broken, so it was thrown in the trash. I still have my original 1998 TDP box though. And of course the original CDs, and the T1 and T2 paper manuals. In fact for some reason the T2 manual is right here on my desk.

Massimilianogoi is italian.

I bought Thief I and Thief II. Total: 8,58€.

I love retro games.

My copy of Thief: Deadly Shadows have english language but is subtitled in italian. Stephen Russell is great and I hope that he will give his voice to Garrett in Thief IV. In Italy we have a great voice actors but sometimes I prefer the original voices.
