Please help me with Combo Throws!

I've had this game for a few weeks and really like it.

Last night I unlocked the Special Combo Throw. I've read the instructions on how to use it, but it isn't working right for me. I've tested it out in the Intensive Treatment challenge and when I get up to x8, I will go to hit a guy and Batman will automatically pick up a guy and throw him in whatever direction he's facing. I do not even get to hit Shift + Left Click. He just picks guys up whenever he wants and throws them. I cannot control the direction he's throwing them either. What am I doing wrong?!
