Default Can Not Install Thief

Hi All,

Ok, this ones not been discussed. It's a new spin on an old problem.

I can not install Thief on my rig at all.

Win 7 x64 Ultimate
ATI 6870
X-Fi Fata1ity PCI
16 Gigs of RAM.

I get a BEX error every time I try to install. I had Thief installed before, but now, it will not install no matter what I do. The D:\setup -lgntforce does not work. Copying the entire disk to my HD did not work. Compatibility on the exe. did not work.

Nothing will work. The DVD rom reads ok. The exe. is good, but will not run the setup. At my wits end here. I have not seen this issue here on the forums. Any suggestions?

I have not tried it myself, but Goldsla posted here recently about Tafferpatcher. It has some independent install routines, as I recall.

Great news. Where is the Goldsla routines you mention? Anything would help out I'm sure.

If you have one of the collections on DVD they should install. If you have the original games on separate CDs then read the HOW TO INSTALL in this forum.

Try www.TTLG.com in the LEGACY GAME forum with a search for Win7. Many have managed to install the games.

I don't use W7 so I have no suggestions other than posted. Read all the STICKIES here.

I just installed Thief Gold on my Win7 64 bit machine.

What Does BEX stand for?

You can read my post with steps on how I got it running in the "How to make Thief 1 run on a modern computer" sticky. Do you have Thief Gold? Or Thief The Dark Project? Is it a retail copy or something that you downloaded somewhere?

Well, I guess you did not read my post. I am having problems with Thief 1, not Thief 2. That patch is for Thief 2.

BEX, or buffer overflow exception error.

This has a lot to do with drivers and exc. within the game. Not sure what specifically, but it is a big pain in the ass.

Ah...uhm...the only thing that has been reported which Thief checks is the indeo codex, but that gets installed by default in Win7 so unless you have done something to it then the setup.exe application isn't going to care if you are using a horse-drawn carriage as a graphics card. But, I did notice that you indicate you have 16 (sixteen) GB of RAM. setup.exe IS going to check how much RAM you have as well as hard drive space. Unless it's a typo and you just have 6GB of RAM (which is the maximum Windows can use) then it's possible that setup.exe is barfing when it sees 16GB of RAM when it expected no more than 1GB.
