Thumbs up Tools and Weapons

So far we've had four tools\weapons confirmed, Sawed off Shotgun, Bow, Pistol, and Axe. We've also seen Lara with a more primitive axe weapon in the Wolf Den area.

Do you think there will be more tools/ weapons in the game? If so, which gear items would you like to see added and why? Also, out of the existing items, which is your favorite?

I'd personally love a battery powered flashlight in one of the games. Would really only make sense for this game, to find old batteries lying around in more recent ship or plane ruins, with technical equipment. It would be nice to keep the flashlight with you and just "refill" it as needed.

So far out of the tools confirmed, my favorite is the axe for the fact that is it so multifaceted. I can't wait to control some real melee combat in Tomb Raider, possibly implemented with higher priority than in passed games. I also love the sound of being able to scale the cliffs with the axe, if we can truly hack up, down, and around those mountains I'll be the happiest Tomb Raider fan in the world.

I have to mention the ranged weapons as a sort of runner-up though. There's something so nostalgic about having a shotgun, even though it's a new variation of the shotgun never featured in a Tomb Raider game, it stands out as familiar against all of the wacky new gizmos. I'm also dying to see manual aim and how it will be competitive while having a unique flavor.

Hmm, I'm pretty satisfied with this limited amount of weapons, but I agree with the flashlight, there has always been a source of illumination in other games, it would make sense she finds it after a while, there are always some dark areas (although, I always turn up the brightness in-game or on my monitor in those situations BUT, there are always areas darker than black ).
And what is a "sawed off" shotgun?
Maybe she could use a knife, a bigger one, or a machete actually? That could be both a weapon and a tool.

I agree with Dino. I really don't want many weapons in this game. And I certainly don't want a grapple ^. That would just take away the whole raw survival instinct of Lara with her having to rely on her gadgets again...

I think it'd be cool if she MacGuyver's a grapple. You know, the inspiration for her carrying a grapple later on in life. There's bound to be some rope and a tiny boat anchor or something like that in that wreckage on the island. Well, I would think, anyways.

Hehe, I didn't mean a full on magnetic, random circles sticking out of walls grapple... I meant, ahh I'm falling *throws* smashes into a wall grapple

Yeah, a flashlight! I just can't live without a flashlight. In some of the screenshots it is pretty dark and I always find it annoying when games are too dark. So a 'yes' to flashlight. Though, I think we'll have to be content with a torch for illuminating dark places, which is good too. Actually, a torch sounds a lot more natural than the flashlight.

i have seen this subject discussed in other places and on other forums, and I would just say...keep it simple. Lara doesn't really need an arsenal of weapons like she had in TRU, and I think that giving her too many options for guns, ect. would just detract from the "survivor" aspect of the game. I do think the flashlight is a good idea though...

Yes, fire is more natural.

Both serve different purposes.

You have to find fire to lite the torch, and then carry it around and possibly drop it for climbing.

Whereas a flashlight, you can put into your inventory I'd assume, and hord batteries for the right time.

hope they keep it simple, those weapons mentioned already could be very interesting and i could see we don't get them in the beginning at all but will be sufficiently for me to play with. Looking forward to play around with the axe, bow and lighten up the place with torches. although curious how she will start fire in the first place fire-stones, a lighter, lightning??

I really like the idea of a flashlight but only if you run out of battery and have to wait a while for it to recharge so that you have to be tactical about it and not just be able to use it whenever you like for an easier time.

^ A powerful Lithium battery will not run out before you've finished the game, collected all achievements and completed all time trials

Well let's hope the last time someone crashed on the island it was before Lithium batteries were invented

TR9 Lara is today's Lara, remember. I'm sure there can be plenty of Lithium batteries found on the Endurance

And if not, I'm sure Lara will be skilled enough to hotwire her iPhone battery to power a flashlight

Again, this reminds me of Return to Mysterious Island where the protagonist needed to make an ancient battery a.k.a. Baghdad battery

A shotgun with the barrel tip shortened (sawed-off) to increase the spread of the shot that comes out when fired. It decreases the range effectiveness, but up close, it's a wide spread of death sent out. Watch the first Terminator to see Kyle Reese cut off the tip of a shotgun he finds, along with the handle so he can also fit it easier under his coat.

I love the minimalist, survive-by-whatever-means nature of the tools and such.

But are we sure that shotgun is a sawn-off? I haven't seen it fully in a concept yet...
