Default Thief two crashes on finishing second mission.

My thief 2 crashes as soon as I finish the second mission.

After following most of the guide to gettign thief 2 to run on a modern computer I was able to get thief 2 running. I played through the first mission without trouble, and played through the second mission. While playing the second mission I was getting crashes quite frequently, mostly in the area near the smuggler ship. Once completing the final objective my game crashes, and I need to reset my computer to get any control of anything back.

When trying to fix this issue I have tried to reinstall the video codecs, and set affinity to only one cpu. Niether action has fixed the problem.
I have the safe_texture_manager thing doing its thing.
I also tried to set the starting mission to mission 3, and start a new game from there. My game still crashed.

My computer is a windows XP machine. I have a NVidia video card.

What else should I try to fix this. I'm really keen to play the next mission!

Ok, I'm away from my pc at the moment, but I have continued to trawl through these foums for some hopefully relevant advice.

I am going to see if compatibility is set to windows 2000, and try tafferpatcher. hopefully one of these help.

I use XP, and I have never used compatibity mode or tafferpatcher. Apart from the ideas in the sticky thread, I suspect that the main thing is a problem with an even-more-modern graphics card and its drivers. I have used DDFIX to solve this and a host of other problems. For my OS (XP) and graphics card GeForce 8800 GT, I need to use an old version of DDFIX - 1.3.11, which can be found if you dig deeply enough.

I note that DDFIX requires a patched EXE for it to work. Some patched EXEs are incompatible with recent versions of Thief, so you need to be careful. Tell us what version / publisher of Thief you have. The DDFIX thread at TTLG, devoted to the more recent DDFIX releases, may be of help.

You are missing a description of your system including video card and drivers and other hardware. XP amd Nvidia are not enough information.

Hey peter, thanks for replying.

at the moment, I am trying to figure out what exactly is causing my crashes. I think it may be cutscene related. Some of my patching work has managed to hobble my thief game along to mission 5 or so. I can play missions fine, but seeing the cutscene at the ends crashes my game sometimes.

I still think I can find a better fix for my problem.

My thief game would have been published around 2000, by Eidos. I've patched it to the most recent official patch.

Video card: Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT
driver version 6.14.0012.6658

What other computer info could help narrow things down?

It looks like a fairly stock system with a patchable Thief version and a fairly modern graphics card. I guess that you should be good to go with DDFIX. I suggest that you apply that patch and report back. I recommend 1.3.11. Let me know where you stand on that. I repeat that recent versions 1.5 etc. did not work for me and my 8800 GT. The developer dropped support / testing for XP. Look at TTLG for the fixed versions of the EXE to which you must apply the patch.
