eBooks and phones

I was bored in Detroit, so I looked at the NPC animations for playing on a phone and reading an eBook.
On the eBook there are definite words (and the date "2012"), and on the phone is a picture of something (a room, perhaps a lab?).

I know it's an unnecessary detail but I'm curious to know what these things actually are.
Does anyone know?
