getting PS2 controllers to work

I have a PS2 Dual shock controller and an adapter for it to run it on my PC. I have the Complete Saga edition of the game. When I open the game and press the button to use the controller, it goes to the configuration menu and none of the settings are filled out. Also, when I try to set the controls, the game doesn't register that i pressed the button and thus doesn't change the setting. What do I need to do to make the controller work? Is it the game, the controller, or the adapter? My OS is Windows 7, 32 bit, if that makes a difference.
