A slight problem with TR3

Im playing tomb raider 3 on the XP and I am unable to swim when holding the left and up cursor keys. All it does is make beeping sounds when I try to press them together.
However if I press the buttons using the number pad arrows 4 and 8 during swiming there's no problems but im not useto using these buttons to play thats why I want to use the cursor keys to play because its more comfortable. Everything else seems ok.
does anyone know how to solve this problem? is there any patch for it?

I'm playing TR3 on PC at the moment too, I'm currently in the South Pacific levels.

Thanks alot mum this really solved the problem, it also solved the game speed which was very helpful.
