Hello there! My name is Jessica! I hope that someone here can help me out as i have played the first level of TR2 the golden mask like 4 times. Here is the problem. The game runs perfect but when i complete the first level, after it shows me my statistics, etc. when it attempts to go to the 2nd level the game kicks out and i get this error message: Fatal: Level 2 (D:\data\level2.TR2) requires a new Tomb2.exe(version 1362601) to run.
???????? I am not a computer person by any means so this is japanese to me. I thought my disc might be old / corrupt so i went out and bought a new disc which said that it was compatible with Windows XP. Well same thing happened. So i went to a different computer. Tried it with both discs on the different computer, and same exact error. (If anyone needs any help as far as a walkthrough for level 1, just ask me he he cuz unfortunately I have become quite the expert after playing the same level four times.!!) Anyway, one person said that i had to change the tomb2. exe file to be compatible with windows 95 or something. but..... i cant even find the tomb2. exe file. I went to C rogramfiles/ coredesign/tombraider 2 and opened up all of the files.. and i CANNOT find tomb2.exe. So basically i am lost....anyone who wants to help a poor female, please email me back at jessica_lynne_trish@yahoo.com or lara will never save the day.. thanks again ! J |

You don't have to go into the TR2 install folder to find the Tomb2.exe file, you can use the shortcut on the Start menu that you use to launch the game.
Right-click on the Tomb Raider II shortcut on the Start menu, and choose Properties from the menu. Select the Compatibility tab, and tick Run this Program in Compatibility mode for: and choose Windows 98 / ME. That should most likely solve the crashing problem. Bump.
What about me? I'm using Windows 2000 and encountered the exact same error message under the exact same circumstances, excep that the number was 1327561. I tried putting in the TR2Gold disc 1. That only made it ask for the Gold disc 2. Since when I was playing TR2Gold with the no CD-access patch (bad idea on my part; missed a lot of music and such), so I thougt maybe that was part of the problem. So I restored TR2's EXE to the original. Same error. Then I tried copy/pasting it into TR2Gold's folder and same error. I tried that last step because the only EXE in the TR2Gold folder is t2gold.exe and the error message talked about TOMB2.EXE. Anybody have any ideas? Thank you for your time. Sorry for the double post. Didn't know if this community would prefer updates be made by another post or by editing the first, so I went with the one that's more visibile.
I don't know the culprit, but I managed a workaround. Which leads me to believe that maybe there's some cutscene or FMV that is supposed to play inbetween The Cold War and Fool's Gold? Anyways, I downloaded a save game that takes place during Fool's Gold. Then I loaded my own save at the very end of The Cold War, finished the level, and was able to start inside Fool's Gold. Not sure why, but that's a workaround that worked for me. Thanks to Stella and her website (including savegames, found here for providing a continuingly useful resource
