Default at my wits end

Ok, Ive done every possible fix to get thief 1 and 2 running on my comp. Nothing has fixed it. So, Should I install windows 98 as a second OS and use it strictly for 2 games, or should I just call it quits?

thanks for the link, but like I said, I tried everything already.
I've gone through the whole list from that thread already. I was hoping that someone would maybe know something that I haven't tried.
Thanks

Uhh...what actually happens when you try to run it? Black-screen right away, or does it get to the menus, you try to Start and then it crashes, or does it crash with a repeating sound or...? ....the possibilities are quite endless, and a bit more info can be helpful for those of us who attempt to help.

Your earlier posts indicate it is not getting along with the video card, since it runs in SW mode but not HW.

update
got it to work, but I have to use the lowest video settings, and it looks friggin horrible.
I'd really like to play with some better graphics.
Anyone?

Have you tried downgrading the video card driver for the GF FX 5900? A drastic step, but not as bad as installing a separate OS just to play. The latest drivers from Nvidia seem to have broken something for Thief 1 and 2, and going back to a 4xxx series driver (if you can on the FX 5900) might fix it.

Otherwise, play in SW. OK, maybe not , but given that you have tried 'everything' already that is what you do if you REALLY want to play it. Or build a state-of-the-art P III 400 Mhz or so, see if you can find a Voodoo 3 and SB Live on eBay for $5 each....that kind of thing.

Post back with some more info and if I have any bright ideas I'll surely share them.

ok, well, I had installed thief 1 from "start, run", then doing the force thing. That worked, I could play, but only on the lowest video settings. I played for a while, rebooted my comp, and now the game doesn't work at all. I click "new game" and it goes to a black screen, and kicks me back to the desktop.

I'll try the 5900 drivers, hopefully it'll work. Funny thing, I had to buy a new video card to play thief deadly shadows, but now I need a different card for thief 1...

Thanks!
