Defiance was thought to be *Soul Reaver 3* , later it became Defiance. So partially it is SR3.

if the game was to end here, I'd consider it SR3...but honestly, when\if it is to continue, I'd consider it the game that sums up the whole Soul Reaver substory in the whole Legacy of Kain . In a sense, it is a hybrid, not just because you can play as Raziel and Kain.

In essense, Defiance is the third part of the Soul Reaver story arc. Storywise, it continues where Soul Reaver 2 left off.

As it stands, Blood Omen 1 and Soul Reaver 1 could have stood as individual products, and two separate stories. However, Soul Reaver 2 drew heavily on the "history" of the original Blood Omen. Blood Omen 2 came out, and it went off on a tangent Now, we have Defiance, which attempts to tie them all together.
