Default T3 Text problem

When I start Thief 3 the text for my main menu is missing. It loads up with the text (the hint), and when I click what would be 'Exit to desktop' (it plays a sound when I click), it asks whether I do in fact want to exit to desktop, but the text for 'Yes' and 'No' is missing also, etc.

The text for briefing/debriefing and I expect letters is also missing and it basically renders the game useless. It might be possible to play but I would have to remember what letters tell me to do and fumble about finding the right buttons.

I have uninstalled the game and the mods which seemed to cause the problem, but each time I install Thief 3 on this computer there is no visible text for the majority of the places where it should be.

I figure installing a certain mod which changed the appearance of the menu (among other things) changed something about how the game dealt with the properties of the now missing text and the uninstallation of the mod meant the text had no font or something which caused it not to appear.

I can't remember the mods I installed. I think when I first installed the game on this computer I may have done it in Italian (and then the mod showed the text in English anyway). I can't remember whether the problem occurred upon installation of the mod or upon its removal (I think the latter though).

Any help appreciated
