Theory: What is the Elder God?

::cues creepy music::

What's you're take on the Elder God/ Why he looks like so?

My take: I think someone was reading H.P Lovecraft at the time :D
It looks to me that the Elder God is, or was inspired by, the Cthulhu mythos written by Lovecraft, "Call of the Cthulhu", a story of an evil elder god sleeping beneath the ocean until it's awakening where it will then feed upon the flesh of it's human cattle that worship the massive, bloated, beastial, squid-like creature blindly.

Here's a pic for you, looks like something from LoK doesn't it?

Points to be made:
Cthulhu The Elder God
*Sleeping under the ocean. *Lives under the pilliars
in a pool of water.
*Feeds on humans. *Feeds on souls
*Is worshiped rather *Worshiped blindly.
blindly.
*Is also called an "elder *Is called Elder God.
god".
*Greatly resembles a *Is a giant squid by the looks of things

You might be on to something. One thing you need to remember is that the Elder's extensions are at multiple places. He was not only in the Pillars Chamber in Soul Reaver 2, but also at the bottom of the Abyss in the Spectral Realm in Soul Reaver 1, and at three other places in Defiance. It could very well be that the main body of the Elder is somewhere else. It might even resemble Cthulhu's form in appearance. The other bodies could be extensions of the Elder's main body used to see the world.

Ah, yes I forgot about that ::smacks the back of her hand with a wooden spoon:: shame on me.

Thanks for reminding me! ^.^

Wow Janos!, you're definitely onto a point! I've known what a Cthulhu is but it didn't even dawn on me!!**smacks head**

Rock on ! You're definitely onto something!

I'm not trying to josh you Janos..lol..just trying to enforce this great point you've just made!

BTW..is it me or..if Kain fought something similar to a Cthulhu, does that mean he fought one side of the Elder God's Face??

Yeah, I saw those too, choosing the one in the first post because of it's uncanny (or is it?) likeness to the LoK art style.

Them's some good ones though!

DestinyOfKain 12-13-2003 07:25 AM

thanks, lol..but you just said right, the pic you used does have that uncanny resemblance towards the style used for the concept arts in the whole Legacy of Kain series.

The question was already submitted to him and he was unable to pinpoint an answer. You can view it here. When his schedule permits, perhaps he can find out more for you.

Also, because this issue has been raised in the past, you may wish to check out the responses of some other members. :)

You're quite welcome. :)

DestinyOfKain 12-13-2003 08:16 PM

so anyways, Umah, what do you think about the Cthulhu idea\theory?

Janos of Uschtenheim 12-13-2003 08:22 PM

Uh oh! Spot light's on you, Umah! ::flipps on spotlight switch::

Umah Bloodomen 12-13-2003 09:00 PM

I have always believed it is a sound theory. I can't really offer any proof that The Elder God was actually inspired by the Cthulhu on account it hasn't really been officially disclosed by Amy Hennig or Crystal Dynamics. It would be unfair of me to advocate/confirm the notion when I have only participated in the speculation regarding the issue. :)

DestinyOfKain 12-14-2003 05:55 PM

I get you......I've been trying to pinpoint similarities between the two more in depth...and the more I think about it, the more it seems either he's Cthulhu influenced or a Cthulhu-like monster...

I mean, if you really think about it, The Cthulhu was worshipped blindly by the people, and people like Moebuis worshipped the Elder God blindy..I mean his faith changed once he truly saw that he was worshipping nothing more than a monstrous creature.

Also, look how blindly Raziel followed the Elder God's orders at first...when his rage subsided, he came to his sense and realized something was up, and now we see that the Elder God appears to be opposed to the Vampires for some undisclosed reasons.

And what makes people different than any other creature is its potent life-essence, or its soul...so while the Cthulhu devours humans, the Elder God indirectly devours their life-essence, their souls.

bah, if I'm only paraphrasing..I deserve a slap :) ...

I can't really wait till the next sequel, hopefully we'll find more answers...

**slaps DestinyofKain***

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. ;) :p :D

I do see and agree with the traits of The Elder God which mimic that of the Cthullhu, however it's important to recognize that if the Cthullhu was actually the inspiration, then it's in an adaptive sense. (Meaning that they're not 100% exact, but similar in many instances). While it's good to make some comparisons, it's better not to just try and make one creature the perfect clone of the other. (I really hope that made any sense). :p

This is a prime example of the level of intricate detail Amy has introduced to the series. Something that I'm afraid many other games tend to lack this day and age.

Apocrypha Roxy 12-15-2003 11:08 AM

Makes sense

I wouldn't be suprised if Amy took inspiration from Cthulu. Another indication how deep this series truly goes.

Dimmu Borgir's Progenies of the Great Apocalypse is a great soundtrack for Squiddy vs Kain, eh? Gotta love that orchestra...

Cthulu Plushie... and Squiddy plushie via Lady_D... coincidence? I think not... ;)

DestinyOfKain 12-16-2003 02:18 PM

ROFLMAO

that was hilarious!

I didn't expect that from the link
