I think by "trap" he means that if Batman WERE to attempt to do that, it could have adverse consequences. I would think that Joker is a smart enough guy that he would think of all contingencies. If Joker gave Batman the opportunity to "knock him off", I'd place bets that he had a plan for that, otherwise he wouldn't give that option.

But basically, he offered in the story because he knows Batman won't kill him. That's their history together.

By trap I meant Joker could have one of those false hands on so when Batman goes to knock him off (i.e kick his hands and make him fall off) Batman misses and falls off himself.

i'd cripple the Joker too. I'm not killing him, but I can't live with the responsability of the deaths he causes because I sit tight and HOPE the authorities will do something. Without legs and arms he'll have to rely on unreliable thugs for most of his work and he'll be in pain. I'm not killing, but I'm not letting him kill either.

To be honest, the Joker would eventually be offed by his own goons or a hit by the mob. Batman knows this so he wouldn't bother to have the Joker's death on his hands.

your right man. Its impossible to hurt the joker in a way that he'll give up. But you can deffinatly hurt his feelings which in many cases mental pain can supass physical pain.
