View Full Version : Any comics that are must reads?
Just recently I have read The Killing Joke, which I enjoyed a lot. So I was wondering if there were any other must read Batman comics that anyone could recommend? I also like Superman so any recommendations for Superman comics would be much appreciated as well.:D

Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
All Star Superman
Superman: Red Son
Lex Luthor: Man of Steel
and non-Superman stuff:
V for Vendetta
Thanks for that, are there any Batman comics you can recommend as well?

These are all the Batman comics I currently own:
Batman: Year One
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: Dark Victory
Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth
Joker (written by Brian Azzarello)
The Dark Knight Returns (<-- which is my personal favorite)
They are all very good.
These are Batman comics I don't have yet, but I've heard they're great:
Batman: A Death In The Family
Batman: Heart Of Hush
Batman: War On Crime
Batman Adventures: Mad Love
Batman Confidential: Of Lovers And Madmen
Batman: Face The Face
Arkham Asylum: Living Hell
Batman: Gotham By Gaslight
Superman: Speeding Bullets
Batman VS Predator
Batman & Spider-Man
Batman & Dracula: Red Rain
I'll tell you more if I can think of any.
Sadly, there are also some comics you want to avoid, or at least take with a grain of salt. I've heard bad things about all of the following, but a few people like them as well, I guess it really depends on your tastes:
All-Star Batman & Robin
The Dark Knight Strikes Again
Batman: Hush Returns
I'm also personally not very fond of most of Grant Morrison's works, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people would disagree with me on that. He's written the modern comics, including Batman: RIP, where he set up Batman to be killed off and got Dick Grayson to take up the mantle as Batman... Some people like these stories, but I can see only Bruce Wayne being Batman...

Allright well heres the big fanbase must haves:
- The Dark Knight Returns
- Batman: Year One
- Batman: The Killing Joke
- Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on a Serious Earth
- Batman: The Man Who Laughs
To get into the modern Batman, you can just straight jump into "Batman and Robin" which is about Dick Grayson as Batman, and Bruce's evil son being the Robin. If you wanna enchance the experience you can get Morrison's Bruce-Batman trilogy which i highly recommend:
- Batman and Son
- Batman: The Black Glove
- Batman R.I.P
Some fun titles to read but not demanded:
- Joker (Brian Azzarello + Lee Bermejo)
- Batman: Hush
- Batman: The Long Halloween
- Batman: Dark Victory
- Batman: As the Crow Flies
- Batman: Gothic
- Batman: Under the Hood (this is getting an animated film this year!)
- Batman: Dark Detective (Paul Dini goodness)
- Batman: Private Casebook (more Dini goodness)
- Batman: Heart of Hush (Dini awesomeness!)
Regarding Superman. GET All-Star Superman and Superman: Red Son. Some of the best comics i've ever read.

One of my All time favorite Superman stories is actually a single issue. The title is "For the man who has everything" by the great team of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons in Superman Annual #11.If you can find it great,if not,you can find the story in DC UNIVERSE: THE STORIES OF ALAN MOORE

Swamp Thing. Awesome series. Just finished book 5 where Swamp Thing turns Gotham into a giant forest, and pays a visit to Arkham Asylum. Also, goes one on one against Batman, but isnt the first time Batman shows up in the run. Definitely the greatest comic series ive ever read.
Alright thanks everyone, I shall definitly see if I can get my hands on these comics.:thumb:

Just to let you know, you can download Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 (Alan Moores 2nd issue but first one after tying up previous storylines) for FREE off DC/Vertigo.
PLEASE, everyone read the free issue. IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. Im not even lying. This is Alan Moore at his peak, and the art matches the incredible quality of writing. This run in comics led to the creation of the Vertigo line, and was the first comic not censored. ( And if you know anything about Moore, that is one of his biggest problems with the comic world)
It is probably the scariest comic ive ever read, and hooked me immediately. And the quality only gets better for from issue #21 to through # 50. The Crisis on Infinite Earths tie-ins and the annuals are amazing are just some of the great issues. Swamp Thing plays a huge part in COIE. Great cameos by Constantine (created by Moore), Zatanna, Deadman, Phantom Stranger.

Yeah ive read just about everything from Quitely+ Morrison. Really Liked WE3. The animals and stuff were cool.
I second All Star Superman as well. Definitely one of the best Superman stories. Along with For All Seasons.
