Some of you may have seen this http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2izoh_batman-arkham-asylum-fan-trailer-en_shortfilms

The highly popular and much loved by fans "A Serious House on Serious Earth" fan trailer By Spanish Film maker Miguel Mesas.

What this thread is about, is that Warner Brothers have pulled this popular video from YouTube due to copyright?
This may be old news to some - But personally I find this rediculous.

The music is credited and is already used on a lot of other videos which still remain, all the footage is original and work of the directors and actors, So I really don't see how Warner Bro.s can remove this video due to copyright...

Any thoughts?

I think it's ridiculous. Warner Bros. could only stand to have more fans of Batman from this. The guy put all of his own money into this film's creation and he's not distributing the film to make money from it. Not to mention it's been up for years now. However, with that all said, from the beginning seeing this spot, I did think it was in jeopardy. The music may be "credited," but it's used throughout the piece to bolster it. You might get away with a few notes, but the music copyright alone is killing this film. You can't use a song without paying for the copyright to this degree of it being totally integral to your film and not have people take affront. Then, unfortunately, the whole point of this video is an almost spot-on recreation of moments from the famous comic graphic novel, even the lines are the same. While shot extremely well, there's nothing in this that's truly "original." With Arkham Asylum the game now on the shelves, and having a comic of the same name, Warner and DC now probably feel this video will somehow, potentially, step on the toes of their franchise. And, again, this director made a trailer for a proposed movie about the graphic novel. If Warner Bros./DC ever wanted to make a movie about the graphic novel, then the confusion would set in. The film skirted around in dangerous territory. However, Warner Bros. and DC waited too long to act, imo. The video will be out there, regardless, no matter how many times they try and take it down.

There are also other uncredited, far worse, depictions of Batman fan movies out there... I just saw "The Death of Batman" yesterday... Ugh... Someone must've really not liked Batman :p Anyway, I am sure this will all blow over. The film is already up on other sites, as you're pointing out. Unless Warner Bros. wants to devote a team entirely to scouring the NET for this everywhere it pops up, they should just let it be. Imo. We'll see.

Wow, that was a great video. Danny Elfman's score FTW.

sorry to burst your bubble guys but the guy was advertising a batman show called "a serious house on serious earth" all the footage is indeed original but sadly. the source work is not:(

on the other hand, you could think of it this way.

its so incredibly good that warner bros have actually seen it as a threat. theyil probably hire him to finish it.

hopefully:)

The trailer IS the finished work. It was always just a trailer project. People just take it as an actual trailer for an actual fan film... While the film is the trailer.

what i meant by finish it is that, make it feature length. although not the point i was trying to make.

the actual trailer, whatever you want to call it, takes right out of the actual book. it looks so professionally done that people would mistake it as a mainstream piece of work without the warner bros logo anywhere near it.theyre not endorsing his work.

Copyright issues not withstanding, these fan films further promote Batman. Especially when they're well done. Promotion is always a good thing, isn't it?

I can totally see where this is coming from though. The "musical-revenue-powers" that be. Having had my own experience in the music industry, I know that they are the tightest-tightwads of all branches of the entertainment industry. Yes, even more than the film industry. For years they've clung to their archaic system of delivering music to the masses, and the technological advances that have been made threaten the livelihood of many over-paid music executives. Instead of embracing these new advances, they continue to shove their heads in the sand and hope that everything will go back to the way it used to be - when THEY had total control over music delivery. As far as I'm concerned, this is just another example of their dying gasps to keep themselves above water.

Do I harbour some resentment against the main-stream music "industry"? You bet. I've seen first hand how they operate and it wouldn't surprise me in the least that this removal was music related.

Well, lemme just say, any Bat fanfiction that's in need of some good, royalty free music, lemme know. I have a soft spot for Bat fanfilms (that are GOOD).

Here's a track that I recently composed. NOTE: This is NOT to be used without my permission. I know, ironic, but it's for sampling only, not for use with film projects. I will sue the pants off of anyone who uses THIS particular track. :D But, for new, original, project specific stuff, I can help.

Granted, it's not necessarily Batman sounding, but I do Bat stuff time to time, as well. :)

Nice stuff. Sounds like most of your instruments are sampled. Is there any acoustic recording in this? Did you hook up a mic and record any part of this acoustically? I'm basically wondering what kind of musician you are. Are keys and samples your specialty?

I like the vibe.

Yeah, I'm a filmmaker who appreciates the importance of original music, so I utilize a few libraries (Garritan Personal Orchestra, and the stuff that comes with Logic Pro) and score my own stuff. Have gotten pretty good at it. For budgeted films, I of course would defer to an actual orchestra, scoring and then getting that information to someone who could put it together in "real life", but for non-budget/low-budget films, I love makin' purty sounds. :D

And you can check out more of my stuff at www.showcaseyourmusic.com/brandonfreeman. The second track is actually a Batman inspired track. :D

Well, I have to tell you ...there's a real variety of orchestral emotion that moves through your pieces. Nice control of your samples. A lot of your music is very haunting. I could see a lot of this music fitting well in the horror genre. ("The Interrogation" is playing as I type this). Rock on, my friend!

Nope, but if you notive the pose he gave when defeated was the "crosst" pose. I'd recommend you read the script for the comic.
