View Full Version : What are opinions on K&L movie?

I'm new to this forum but been playing K&L since I got my 360 cause it was one of my first games and than eventually after so many nights playing with my cousin on Fragile Alliance it has become my favorite game.
Sadly, when news about movie came up I was kinda bummed. Because being a film student myself, it was actually a movie I wanted to make one day lol
So, after few connections here and there I got my hands on Kyle Ward's script...and boy, was it a joke? Has anyone else read it?
I apologize it's kinda off topic but I can't wait for K&L2 and I wanted to see what other fans think about the movie.

where'd you get a copy of the script? you couldn't send it to me, by any chance, also we wont know if it's good until its made, could be really good, could be really bad. but i wouldn't mind seeing our favourite characters on the big screen

Sure, do you have an e-mail you can give? Perhaps in a PM if you don't want random people e-mailing you later lol
Also keep in mind, it might be a very rough draft but even if so it doesn't seem like much of K&L because a lot of what was great in the game is not in the script. In fact, I think it's a big mess. I was very disappointed with the plot as well as the characters...maybe it's just me.
Oh and as for where I got it, well I actually had trouble with this one cause the movie is in pre-production and the studios are very tight about it. However, there is a community of screenwriters that don't mind sharing. I was told not to give it out to too many people, but how much is too many? :P
Also before you read the script, you might want to read this review: http://www.mypdfscripts.com/scriptreviews/pitchpatch-reviews-kane-lynch
I totally agree with that guy lol

Lynch, The demented English Lord of the Manor :lmao:
Seriously, I feel quite dissapointed. Even though I don't care about movies based on video games, we're talking about Kane & Lynch here. Those 2 things would go hand in hand. :(

A) Lynch is from Detroit
B) he worked at an abbatoir
C) Kane's nationality was British, but he didnt have an accent cause he'd been a mercenary for so long
Reading that reveiw hurt my brain

Video game movies never really catch a copy-paste image... EVER... Even the new Prince of Persia movie has some off-key moments from the game...
I guess Kyle Ward is trying to avoid the too many Fs everyone saw in the game and put some creativity... I'm aware how stupid he sounds as a british posh guy but you know hollywood.... Creativity comes in a bundle of WTF?!?!
I'm looking on the bright side that the script is NOTHING CLOSE to what Uwe Boll would have done... Seriously.. that guy's an idiot...

Uwe Boll. He's not a filmmaker but a terrorist with a time bomb strapped to each movie he makes.

I had read somewhere (i'm sorry I cannot prove the source)
IOI doesn't mind how the movie will alter the characters.. as long as they keep the feel of the game. (If you guys at IOI are hearing me please confirm or deny my statement)
You're gonna hate me when I say: Hitman movie was OK...
It wasn't grand but they kept a little feel to the game... In the game YOU (i.e. 47) aren't forced to take a perfect approach, you could CHOOSE to blow up everywhere. We don't imagine Mr.47 doing that coz we're used to only trying to perfect way out.
My point here is... As long as they keep the feel of the game.. I guess that's what makes a good movie... Still.. they could have made a better Lynch impression then a british posh dude...
Speaking of british Posh: Has anyone tried Photoshopping Gary Oldman to look like Lynch?
Dr Klowneus

i tried but with mixed results, ill post it on flickr later and send you a link, but it's not very good,
Okay, not to jump the gun or anything but I'm boycotting the movie, and I'll tell you why
because they completely misrepresented Lynch, If i wanted Lynch to sound like Hannibal Lector, I'd just watch Silence of the lambs, The character of Lynch is not British, Not upperclass, and doesnt sound completely ridiculous whenever he says anything. so if this info is genuine, then that's it guy's i'm done
Also if they retcon Lynch for Dog Days to make him british, upperclass, etc, then i'll boycott the second game as well

Well that's re-assuring:D, but still not looking forward to the movie now, unless they modify the script to make Lynch...Lynch again
You have to wonder why they let them do this...things.
Looking at the quality of their animation, you'd think they'll could do one by themself.
The trailers for K&L and the shorts for Mini Ninjas were great, why gamble with hollywood? you know they don't respect your work.
It's always such a sad thing to witness, this things are a mockery of all the work you've done; you can ear them say "why do you care? it's just a game..." :(

Think about it this way: The live-action movie must be made for both the visual audience and the gaming audience.
The Visual audience would not really appreciate too much of the direct-game visualisation (such as certain game plots which may not make sense). If they ommit those, the gaming audiene wouldn't appreciate that.
Then comes the people who write the script... They want their OWN ideas... but with titles people can relate to. So they pick some of these people pick video games... The references they take from the game are very minimal. Best example of this is the MURDERER UWE BOLL >.<. He takes a title.. and tries TOO DAMN HARD to make a DAMN bad movie out of it... (best example of this is BloodRayne)
Then comes to contract. The hitman movie was going to be good and brutal but 1/2 way 20th Century Fox got scared of this move and changed to director to make a more family friendly version.. which was a totally messed up move.. :( I blame 20th Century Fox for the lack of positive feedback for that movie.
But Lionsgate seems to be interested in the script.. so.. Knowing their history with brutal movies.. we're gonna have some good action with Kane and Lynch.
I know i'm speaking alot of empty stuff here but you get to know how it's done. Best point I can put it out: Movies do not effect games unless the gaming companies allow it to.
Worst case that happened to was with Alone in the Dark... Uwe Boll's travesty was liked.. so the 5th game was based from the travesty.... We need to kill the guy.. seriously...

I had different idea for a Kane & Lynch movie. One was to combine the storyline from game as well as one of the Fragile alliance experience I had.
Anyway, I think Resident Evil 1 movie wasn't too bad. It was like nothing like the game but it was pretty decent. Maybe cause the actress is smoking hot. I can't say same thing about good ol' Bruce Willis that is supposed to play Kane.

Resident Evil was an interesting movie. Coz for a japanese game - there are ALOT of Main Characters to mention such as: Rebeccah Chambers, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield, Carlos, Leon Kennedy, and list goes on... This list of few characters would be hard for a movie to introduce in just 1 or 2 movies and would confuse the audience who never played the games.. and so they had to slide them in slowly. Plus Keep the atmosphere of at least the first 2 games and keeping the FEEL of the game.. In my opinion.. they did a good job of it..

When they announced a "Hitman" movie I remember feeling really good about it because I was always a huge Hitman fan... but after waiting in line and seeing it in the theater, I quickly realized that they had taken a good franchise and basically RAPED it.
The problem is this: Most game storylines aren't compelling enough to fit in a 90-100 minute time block. I mean it just doesn't work that way. So ultimately the director will have to change and tweak the story to make it fit in the context of a big budget movie. They *could* make a true-to-the-game adaption but that would alienate the bajillions of people out there that don't play games and won't appreciate it. They have to eventually make their money back too. You could have the best true-to-the-game movie on the planet but if no one buys tickets it's doesn't mean a damn thing.
What do I think about the Kane & Lynch movie? I'm very apprehensive. Normally I'd feel good about it, but now I know better. I know that to an extent they are going to *butcher* it beyond words, and so I'm expecting that to happen. I only hope that after all the hacking and changing is done, that there's some remnant of the original game in there somewhere. Which I doubt is gonna happen.
The one thing that gives me a little bit of hope is that Bruce Willis has been pretty much confirmed as Kane. Bruce Willis is a great actor and I can't really think of many movies that he really made terrible. If anything... Bruce Willis will turn a ****ty movie into an average movie... and an average movie into a pretty decent movie.
I'll still go see it though, regardless... because I'm a Kane & Lynch fan and I'm into everything Kane & Lynch. I don't expect anything really outstanding though, and neither should you.

Uhm...no.
Problem is that games are not respected, look at the people that do the movies: they don't care for it, it's just an action flick.
It's not about translating the game feeling into a movie(witch with a game so cinematic as K&L it's not that hard), it's about milking money out of it. A videogame movie is just another way to say mindless action.
It's even more absurd when you think that the videogame industry is bigger then the movie industry, wich means that game producer shouldn't need to trow away their product to be slain by hollywood.
Look what happen with comicbooks: only recently they've got the respect they deserve, with movies like SinCity and Watchmen; nowadays seems standard, wasn't always like that. Even when the original it's not taken literally, it's always good filmmaking(batman, hulk), it's never some cheap thing.
It's not going to happen for this film, but in the future games's going to have what they deserve, wich is way more then Uwe's abortions.
For now, it's not even worth the effort.
ps: I really hope to be mistaken about K&L movie.

I really didn't think any of the Resident Evil movies had the "feel" of the video game.
Only movie I can recall that was Silent Hill, and even with the atmosphere it still wasn't best.

My biggest beef about the K&L movie is that I've been told that Bruce Willis has been confirmed as Kane. So they just went with the bald white guy on that one, because I see no resemblances other than the voice, and that is slight. I would have much preferred Ed Harris as Kane and Kevin Gage (Waingro) as Lynch, however I also heard a famous british actor was cast as Lynch, well then I guess maybe Hugh Laurie would have to do. Oh god and I just read the link that had bits of the script in it, *Slits wrists horizontally and collapses*

Anywya , lots of things to say ...
- What Bruce said about the script isn't to be taken seriously , he could have been just 'promoting' the project ...
- The Hitman film was actually a pretty decent action flick IF you don't compare it to the game ... safe to say it'll be the same thing for Kane & Lynch (and besides , Dead Men was Already Like a interactive Action Film , do we seriously needed real life actors to replay the same scenes from the game ? ...
- Patty , you know you can still make a "Kane & Lynch" movie , i already know someone who plans to do it one day , it isn't because there's director A making a film on a particular subject that director B loose his chance ...
- Why changed Jenny's name anywya ? ...

Lynch is like a british gentleman in the movie... and Kane seems like your very traditional anti-hero. They watered a lot of stuff down. In fact from what I've read of the script, it has very little in common with the game itself.
It will probably suck just like the Hitman movie sucked... but that's to be expected. The fact that Bruce Willis is in it means that no matter how much suckage the movie creates, it won't suck TOTALLY because the mere fact that Bruce Willis is in this film guarantees at least some level of acting.
That said... I imagine that it will be just another in a long line of video game movie adaptations that end up in the 5.00 bargain bin at Walmart. Tis the nature of the business I'm afraid.
ohitspatty
12-17-2009, 09:38 PM
Yeah, it's true. I read the whole thing...and trust me. It has so little to do with the game that I felt like punching the crap out of Kyle Ward.
Did he even play the game? I really think they just pitched him the idea and told him to take a creative spin on it. Did you know that Lynch in that script has some kind of microchip planted in his head? Yeah, what the ...., right?
Still, I will see it opening night in theaters. The dialogue is hilarious and there will be some high level action but sadly it won't be dark and gritty like the game.

It wasnt hard to find.Just google it and you should find it.
Its by Kyle Ward,112 pages, dated "9/13/07" so hopefully changes have been made between then and production time.
""Story goes like this.Kane + Lynch are kidnapped from a prison bus by Kane's old partner named Cosgrove, who he thought died during a mission back in Venezuela. The mission was to retrieve a microchip called "The Skeleton Key" which contains launch codes to unused nuclear weapons from the Cold War, but the mission went to hell, the chip was stolen by someone else, and Kane was convicted for treason.Cosgrove (who is the founding member of The7) tells Kane he needs him to steal the chip from its owner, Retomoto, or he will kill his wife and daughter.Cosgrove needs Lynch becuase Lynch was part of a secret government project called "Black Charon" which trained subjects to memorize numeric data, which makes Lynch the only living person that can translate the codes from "The Skeleton Key" and offers Lynch the identity of his wifes killer in exchange for translating but Lynch is all messed up from the mind manipulation that he hears voices and is out of control.
To put it plainly the movie doesnt have a "Kane and Lynch feel",it plays out like a cheap action movie.Bad jokes.Poor dialogue.Just overall a bad movie.worse adaptation. They made Kane into Jason Bourne.Lynch talks like a character from Shakespeare.Through out the story a CIA agent named Carmikael who goes after them has to be the dumbest thing added to the story. Its just another crappy videogame adaptation.""

Seriously you like reading scripts ? ...
Well good for you , but i was talking about the fact that you spoil yourself in reading other people's script that are turning into movies ...
Especially the screenplay of our days ...
We live in a age where all that matters in ninety five percent of the film being made , is the story , not about 'filmmaking' anymore , so by reading the screenplays , you'll remove the pleasure of watching these films ... of our days ...
Yeah , depressing ...
I'm a film student, aspiring writer/cinematographer. So I guess it's depressing?

It's depressing when instead of teaching you how to improve your vision and how to bring it to life into paper and into screen , they give a whole different kind of ... lessons ...
I don't believe that for some damn miracle all the good films came out during the good old days ...

Wait? I never said that it's what teachers tell me to. I do other things at school.
I read 'em during my free time like a book, I suppose. Of course I read a lot of old ones like "The Apartment", now that's a well crafted script with some witty humor written between the lines.
I really feel like you're making a big deal out of nothing.

Well, anyway. I read Kyle Ward's other script. It was pretty cool but sadly Micheal Bay bought the rights to the movie. It will be just bunch of explosions and fast moving cameras.

Its going to be another Doom/Hitman/BloodRayne/Farcry (insert Uwe Boll film here) Film. In other words. EPIC FAIL.

I doubt it will be an EPIC fail..
A fail yes...
Video game movies never really do a good job.. seriously, BUT... I appreciate the effort...
For Hitman there were 2 horrific screw ups:
1> The budget was too low... so the Clone story could not be fitted in.
2> The original director Xavier Gens was gonna do a gory and more violent packed movie then what was released. 20th Century Fox did not like this, so they kicked Xavier Gens half way and re-shoot the scenes... Which was the most Horrible thing 20th Century Fox had ever done!
All Uwe Boll movies are an abomination... No doubt.. If you ever EVER decide to kill yourselves.. watch his second Alone in the Dark movie.. it is sooooooooooo BAAAAAAAAAAADD... you will bleed to death...
As for the Kane and lynch movie.. From what I read from the script... It doesn't sound bad.. The scewing is obvious.. no doubt...I don't mind that...
but I haven't read the whole script.
My conclusion... You may like it as a seperate or "Fan-made" movie... The content will NEVER be as good as the source material.. but doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.

I disagree. It will be horrible.
Hitman movie was pretty bad. It was miscast, the story was different, the scenes were lame...especially the train one with buncha' other hitmen.
Max Payne movie, such a beautiful story got butchered into what turned out to be one of the worst movies I have seen. I even tried to like it, sadly it just sucked.
Silent Hill, it got the atmosphere and story was okay but some acting felt out of place.
Super Mario Bros movie, how high was Bob Hoskins when he agree to make the movie? As a kid I loved the movie, but it has nothing to do with the game.
Resident Evil series, um the Hive? Alice? For realz? George A. Romero had a perfect script for the first Resident Evil movie. Than they proceeded and tried to please the game fans with the Jill Valentine, Nemesis, Carlos and others but did not stay true to the source...and they had a lot of games to study the characters, even some good books out there that stay so true to the game, it's amazing!
Alone in the Dark, I felt asleep during that movie, can't remember much. I love the series for PS1 but this movie was boring. Second one is just as bad if not worse cause I turned it off after first thirty minutes.
Doom, what the hell was that? To this day, I'm not sure what I watched. Looked like diarrhea and vomit on my television.
Lara Croft, I have not seen that one fully. It was on tv recently, must have sucked cause I changed station quickly.
Of course, there is way more.
I think some video games should stay only as games. But I did enjoyed both Final Fantasy movies as well as some animated ones. Mortal Kombat is okay, one of few acceptable. Still none of them is a phenomenal film even when the game was breath-taking.
Anyway, the whole time playing K&L...it felt such a great story for a movie. It's dark, gritty, dramatic, action-packed crime film.

Rent "Samurai Princess" instead. It's funny cause it tries to be serious at some points, it's not! Horrible movie, but good laughs.

Ha sounds good, me and my gf went to see Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus for some laughs as the name made the film sound horrible. It is the most hilarious film i have ever seen despite it is supposed to be serious. You actualy see a giant Shark jump out of the sea and swallow a plane lol.

Unfortunatly yes lol, it was released in August, i dont know the exact date but its on dvd now in Asda. It has the worst cgi effects, C&C Red Alert 3 had poor acting and cgi (my opinion) but it was much better than Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus. Judging from the ending there is going to be a sequal.

There are buncha others really bad movies like Transmorphers: Fall of Man, 30,000 Leagues Under the Sea, King of the Lost World, When a Killer Calls, AVH: Alien vs Hunter, and many, many more.

I'm not watching this film. The only way they could get me to watch it at this point is if they rewrote the script. Changed Lynch back to an american. Hired a new director. Dont see any of that happening so i'm not gonna watch it. simple as that

I think that movies based on video games suck for the same reason that many games suck; those producing games generally operate under the premise that gamers like/tolerate trash. How else can a B-moviesque game like Army Of Two be made?
Or else, the key members of the production team just have bad taste themselves - the terrible quality of the games and game-based movies tends to keep away serious talent... It's an endless spiral of mediocrity that can only be stopped by the game developers themselves.

Michael Biehn is rumoured on imdb now. You think he will be Lynch? Or maybe the bad cop? I suggested him as Kane a long time ago, but i doubt he will be the main character over willis.

From the script, but hopefully the filmmakers are wise enough not to include that in the final product.

Heres how to fix the Kane and Lynch Movie
Sell the writes to Michael Bay and Platinum dunes, They need original content because they keep remaking old movies, They have an aesthetic which is similar to the game, they aren't afraid of violence and gore and they love explosions. seems like a perfect match
Rewrite the script from the ground up. particularly the part of Lynch. The script really did a good job of Kane but it screwed up Lynch to the max. Also they need to keep it simple, have less characters and less things going on, otherwise it will turn out to be a muddled mess like the hitman movie
Heres whats wrong with Lynch
A) his dialogue is retarded, he has a british accent and speaks like an upper class ponce
B) He shoots a cat for no reason,
