View Full Version : Why can't Adam...

What are some things that you think Adam Jensen, realistically, should be able to do in terms of gameplay?

In Assassin's Creed, you couldn't swim (you die when u land in water, yet you can leap off buildings and survive). In Goldeneye, you couldn't jump. In Half-Life 1 & 2, you can't talk, for the entire game. People just order you around, and you have no choices to make.

Some things I think Adam should be able to do are:

-Shoot lights out to darken rooms
-Destroy weak materials realistically (blow holes in walls with explosives)
-Access the internet (of the Deus Ex 3 world).
-Lock doors behind him to keep pursuers out.
-Access all public areas (indoor and outdoor)

-Climb ropes;
-Throw objects at NPCs - meaning if a barrel is thrown at their faces, i hope they get KO;
-Hide inside a cardbox... ke ke ke XD. ok ok inside small spaces like closets and catering carts;
-Use fire hoses - against NPCs and to extinguish fire;
-Use objects as shield - doors, table tops...;
-Stun or deafen NPCs (temporarily);
-Glare or dazzle NPCs (temporarily) - with flashlights, reflected artificial/sunlight (if there is sunlight);
-Open an umbrella when it's rainy - I like to keep maximum visibility when using shades;
-Wipe his dirty feet before breaking into some guarded facility - I like to stay undetected.

-Activate fire-alarms, smoke-detectors, heat detectors (with his lighter) set some objects on fire to lure NPCs.

UPDATE 3:

-beeing able to carry extra stuff in a bag - I'm still not sure how it could be balanced with the personal inventory, but lets say that it would be useful to carry some extras when moving between cities (unless we had to travel urgently to another city without the chance to retrieve the bag from our apartment). There could be some inconvenients while carrying a bag: stoping in security checkpoints; not beeing able to crawl into vents - of course we could exchange items from our personal inventory and then leave the bag behind - or we could crawl into vents with the bag strapped on the legs - movement would be reduced and there would be the extra annoyance of the noise, though it could be possible to leave the bag in the vent and continue moving freely and later push/pull the bag out.

Talking about vents, I hope there are multiple size vents - inside the smaller ones we shouldn't be able to turn around (we should only turn where it's allowed), though it would be possible to crawl back.

Hammer space?

I know something like this has been suggested, but we could choose to carry it or not to a mission and it should have limitations just like the personal inventory. The inconvenience is that it would make you slowdown - dependent on how much space is occupied or the weight of the objects.

1) When crouched in front of a small crate I would like to be able to lean on it. This would be useful to reduce shaking, like when using the sniper rifle. Just mounting things on a ledge like that to increase accuracy would be cool. I think the Sniper Rifle starts with 75% accuracy, lets say that leaning on an object increases it by 5 or 10 percent. (Just played through the Statue of Liberty again, and I usually don't upgrade rifles until I am trained in lock picking, electronics, medicine, and computers.

2) See fire extinguisher thread.

3)Major revamp in combat, make the accuracy for a pistol low but a head shot lethal.

4) Kill by throwing object when you've full arm strength upgrades like in Invisible War, I did it for the lulz.

5) Swim

6) Not Drive, I think it would kill the mood and I rarely see it implemented well.

7) Shoot tentacles out of his back to repel down buildings. Seriously, the option to repel in this fashion seems interesting, maybe an arm augmentation that fires your hand and hooks you up to a building. Any building that is not made out of metal (real useful in the slums).

8) 5 kinds of ammo per weapons max, more than that would really be unrealistic. Regular, hollow point, tracer, incendiary, explosive. Most weapons should have a max of 3, too many ammo types would flood the game with excess ammo. A player that remotely explores would never be pressed to avoid conflict.

9) Arm laser: I mentioned this before in another thread, you're 4 fingers extend by 6 inches and bend them over like you're semi cupping your hand. A metal base extends from you're wrist outwards, the center of it lining up with the center of your extended fingers. A high energy beam forms between the two points. It quickly drains Bio electric energy and prolonged use damages it(over 30 seconds). This could be used for a quick stealth assassination. Also, the beam could be used to cut holes into metal doors, or even weld one shut, by straitening your fingers(used as secondary fire). And you could use this feature in combat for quick kills but a laser shot drains a quarter of you're BE. (Can you tell that Ironman is my favorite superhero.)

I'll think of more later.

It's not quite Adam, but i think NPCs should be able to wake up after being knocked out (depending on how hard and where the player hit them). So it would be wise to lock them up. Or just place them at funny places and watch them to wake up and panic...
I played like this with unconscious bodies in DX and IW. Just for fun of course as they never woke up, but you never know....

And given this, maybe a Commandos style action, where you tie your enemies with their own clothes. Therefore disabling them for the rest of the mission, given that noone unties them up.

While I'd like to be able to change the type of ammo for a weapon I do want those changes to mean something. There has to be a real gameplay advantage to using one type of ammo over the other. Not like in DX where there wasn't a real difference between buckshot and sabot shells.

Blade_hunter
11-22-2009, 05:26 AM
That's why I suggested 8+ max; but just for some specific weapons like shotguns and grenade launchers
See the weapon thread to see what I'm talking about.
Also I took that choice because there is weapons that can use lethal and non lethal ammo as well as effectiveness against certain type of targets
In DX I found the ammo selection quite not that much demonstrative of the gameplay capabilities.

Regular hollow point and tracer personally they are quite useless

Just look at those they are quite useful and they have different effects
For a shotgun for example

1/ Buckshot shells
2/ Slugs
3/ Bolo rounds
4/ Sabot shells
5/ Explosive shells
6/ Electric stun shells
7/ Rubber shells
8/ Tear gas shells

I think the Blaze Idea is fun and personally commandos is quite like DX there is pretty much weapons, effects that fits perfectly for a DX gameplay

From memory, the sabot shells were much more effective against armoured targets such as spiderbots than the buckshot shells, but considerably less effective against unarmoured targets such as NSF commandos. Generally ammunition was too scarce to use the wrong shells against the wrong targets.

I think the flare darts were probably the most superflous ammo in the game given that they were rather cubersome to deploy compared with the light aug.

Blade_hunter
11-22-2009, 08:40 AM
In DX the sabot shells were just standard shells that causes more damage than the regular ones
So they weren't especially more effective against robots they were just more damaging against everything
The description is missing compared to what they really does in the game, try to ask OTP guys they told me that and I tried after in the game and that's right
Sure the flare darts were pretty much useless compared to the sabot shells, but that's some dysfunctional things in DX.
Normally I preferred that flare darts could set fire on people, or be let's say whistling arrows, or some other things, personally there is a lot of possibilities to suggest here ...

Normally sabot shells (for anti armor purpose) are fin stabilized arrow style slugs, that means they have a better effective range than buckshot shells, plus they are a single projectile, and they have a great armor penetration capability
In DX they weren't that at all, I know there is flechette shells that throws little arrows instead of small pellets, they have also better range and armor penetration, but with not enough power to be effective against robot platings

rokstrombo
11-22-2009, 08:50 AM
That's interesting. I think I might have confused the Deus Ex sabot shells with the AP slugs in System Shock 2.

Blade_hunter
11-22-2009, 09:47 AM
Me too at the time; but when I talked about the damage system (projectile effectiveness against a certain enemy type) in the OTP forums, the TNM developers told me that the DX damage system wasn't that evolved.

Jerion
11-22-2009, 02:07 PM
I can understand why they didn't set people on fire (a balancing issue) but flare darts were really useless IMO except for blowing up TNT crates at a distance without using needed ammo. It would be nice for flare darts (or some equivalent) to have some real, however obscure use.

auric

burn boxes.
:D

Blade_hunter
11-23-2009, 02:04 PM
I think they were just made for that purpose, but du to the low amount of very dark areas it's quite useless since all you need is use your light aug and watch quickly those areas to see if there is something or not, sometimes there is a nearby switch ...
With flares it's quite impossible to set people on fire so easily, except in some games ...

To me there is a possible balance for burning foes and it's possible to do, the time that people is set on fire vary second how much "flame" they took
that means we need to spray some flames but to perform a kill with the set fire, now the possibilty to burn people with or flame weapon until they are dead is an other possibility, but it consumes a lot of fuel.

This also could work with arrows or bolts, but I think if we need to fire something like 2 arrows to perform a kill impact + flame damage this can be very balanced, and also fun.
No I think for a mini crossbow it's quite impossible, but for a normal sized one, yes.

I think there is also some utility or other kind of arrows that can be proposed ...

If there is people with some kind of hazmat suit they could be quite invulnerable to flame based weapons and make the flamethrowers not that ultimate, even if you throw a napalm rocket.

My thumb is augmented ^^

For starting fire with a bullet, there is a need of certain friction that create sparks to start some fire, that's the reason if we shoot a propane gas tank it doesn't explode every time, except if you use explosive incendiary ammo.
At least the diesel doesn't burn even with a spark, I tried it and that's because that combustible needs a certain temperature to be flammable

smoke cigs and not cough up smoke....be able to keep a drink down and not get ferriswheel vision.

on that point maybe there should be some system where your nerves get temporarily relaxed and steady helping you aim better when you take some substance like zyme or cigs or drink a beer....

and maybe ability to hold your breath for better aim....with small intricacies like a stamina and breath meter which fills up as you perform strenuous tasks like running, lifting, jumping etc.....so, you breath harder when youre on the run and cant hold your breath for long so aim gets compromised compared to a stealth approach when youre relaxed...thus affecting your aim.
