I didn't like it. The mood and environment was nice, but it was a bit annoying with all the bots. I actually never finished it but tried to get into it twice. I will probably pass on the sequel.

Bioshock was very good. One of the better games of the past few years. Interested in seeing how Bioshock 2 turns out with the player being a Big Daddy. Can't wait for another trip to Rapture.

I like Arkham Asylum a lot more myself. By the time I got around to playing Bioshock, I had heard a year's worth of buzz making it out to be the greatest thing that ever happened to single-player gaming. That kind of hype is enough to leave you disappointed in anything once you finally see it for yourself.
The "would you kindly" reveal was clever, but still. People acted like the guy made your controller move across the floor or something.

Obviously, Psycho Mantis > Ryan and Fontaine. :p
I probably would've liked it more if you found out that you had been playing as Fontaine the whole time. That's what I was expecting to have happen when I played it.

BioShock is one of my favorite games. Really good stuff.
Personally, I like it better than AA. Paul Dini's storyline just didn't work for me, especially with the anti-climatic ending. BioShock's atmosphere, in my opinion, is also superior.

Personally, I loved Ryan's character more. Maybe it's because I despise the MGS series for its over-abundance of cutscenes over actual gameplay sequences. I also dislike how the sentences in the early MGS games are full of "!!!!" and "?!?!"
Such as:
"Hahaha!!!!"

Personally, I rely on the actual words in a sentence. Maybe I'm just not into the Internet idea of using smiley faces as clarifications. Heh. It's worth reminding others, because many people genuinely believe that their opinion is absolute fact, and Psycho Mantis is particularly iconic. I've just never appreciated the MGS series and its tendency to rely on cutscenes to show some significant moments. Too many sequences in the series are explained by cutscenes, making the player feel disappointed that they couldn't fully control Snake and experience these events during actual gameplay.
Just my taste, though.

Just my taste, though.I'm more of a Psycho Mantis fan than a Metal Gear fan, if that makes sense. That clip I posted is pretty much my favorite video game moment of them all. As a matter of fact, I figure it probably inspired the Scarecrow fake console freeze that Rocksteady used in this game.
Everybody had me pumped up to think that Bioshock had a jaw-dropping moment like that, but none of it really jumped out at me. The most clever thing I saw was the "would you kindly" reveal, which would've been much more of a surprise if it hadn't been built up so much by sources outside the game itself. I hadn't read any direct reveals of the plot before playing, but after hearing people talk like it was the most mind-blowing thing they'd ever seen, I really wasn't impressed when I saw it for myself.
Like I said, I played Bioshock for the first time after it won the awards and all that -- seems to me that the first people to play it were a lot more impressed with it than I was. Did you play it when it first came out?

No, I played it several months after its release. I don't think that playing it upon release automatically means that you have unreasonable expectations, though. I think that BioShock's final revelation was effective due to how unexpected it was. Atlas was your source of comfort in the game. He was your sole human connection, and the supposed voice of reason in a crazed environment. In my opinion, Bioshock's storytelling was top-notch, tense, and rewarding.
You don't think much of "would you kindly", because it just seems that Atlas is being polite. You then think about how the gamer was actually complying - unintentionally. It makes you think about what you did during the game.
I love the final scene with Andrew Ryan. For me, his final command to die on his own terms was a frightful gaming moment. BioShock was effective because many of these moments weren't done in restrictive cutscenes. You could control Jack. I still remember the first reveal of the boss doctor in the medical wing - it was quite scary at the time. Cohen the magician was hilarious.

Bioshock has influenced games in general more than any other title this generation.
before BS you oicked up collectibles just for the fun of it, BS audio tapes were worth finding because they told you ther story, if you did not bother wioth them, you never got the whole story, this inspired Gears of War 2 to ahve messages on CPG tags and Batman to have audio diaries as well.
IOt was also the first game to really have an immersive story and was truly a leap of imagination and a fantastically relaised gaming world.
for me BS was the best 1 player game I have ever played, I played first on normal and was so pumped I started immediatley on Hard with all vita chmabers turned off. Which by the way is the way you need to play BS, Hard with all VC turned off, amkes the game even better abnd few agems have a hard mode that is more enjoyable than normal, normally they are just frustrating i.e. Batman I think works best on Normal, a few of the fights are rdidculous on Hard.
On BS you had to think more creatively i.e. how to take out a big daddy easily, because just fighting them was suicide, so you planned a BD fight using your tools, such as setting traps, hypnotising other BD's and using Splicers to weaken it first, when I played on Normal you did not really have to do that, I was never killed once on normal, and the beggining on hard is very difficult but if you can get past first 2 BD's then you start to get more plasmids and tools to help you defeat them.
It was a matserpiece and anyone who did not finish, never got whole experience, anyone who just balsted through on easy never got experience and anyone who never searched every nook and cranny for audio tapes never got it as well, trsut me if you play it on Hard, with all VC turned off and go for every tape, you will think its the best thing since sliced bread.
Because of thsi I am pumped for BS 2 more than any game in a while.
But I was for Gears 2 as well loving the first so much and it was a complete let down, they epic failed and myself and all my friends have been banned form their forums for complaining about it, they are the worst Developer working today.
I just hope BS2 does the first one justice and I for one am also looking forward to the MP side of things.
Hacking bots and tyurrets by the way could really get fun when you need them on hard.
Like setting a trap for a BD and then hiding while 2 turrets and a host of bots take most of it out for you, then you just mop up the pieces, genius
B;AA is equal 2nd best single player Ive played along with Deadspace, Batman would ahve been better, but I flet there were too many titan fights, not enough silent predator, too many riddler trophies and joker teeth, which meant nothing and an uninteresting hard mode, not enough for me to bother finishing it on hard I'm afraid and I did with DeadSpace.
and for me the combat challanges are too difficult and almost like a different game i.e. Ninja Gaiden, which are games I would never play.
Theres my view on these games

he more yu play it, the more you'll relaise this is how the game ws intended to be played and it works better, use your skuills and the enviroenment and find asll upgrader stations etc and you will walk it, I only got killed 3 times on Hard with VC tuned off and I am no gaming Jedi, just plan BD attacks well and its easy once you stat thinking "Rapture".
Oh and if you have trophy achvt for bad ending, then always save sisters, the rewards are always greater in the end.
Use splicers to weaken BD's they wont start attacking you if you just sit back and watch, so enrage some splicers close to a BD and it will take them out and weaken itself for you to come in for the kill, then while you are watching set up some electric traps with crossbow and proximity mines as they will run right at you if its a bouncer, also good to hack a turret and stand close or hack security camera and bullseye the BD, you can take most of them out (later in Game) without firing any shots, and for when that does not work, have a machine gun with armour bullets or electric buch shotgun, its alll about planning and thats where its beauty lies.

I will try those things.
But nothing can make Big Daddy fights anything other than horrific when dying matters.
I am just going to ignore the BDs till I get trap making weapons.
I got very lucky I think.
There is a Little Sister crying in Neptunes Bounty.
I think the BD got accidentally killed by slicers and turrets.
So that is one I do not have to fight. :)
Hopefully she is not a bug.
Being good on this, or I will try for the disapointed ending.
Depends how patient I feel.
I will never run out of ways to run away from angry BDs lol.
I really hate this trophy and it's Survivor friend.

Your view on Bioshock is slightly flawed. Bioshock was not the first game to have audio recordings that you collect. I'm not entirely sure which was, but I know that Doom 3 had PDA recordings that you would collect and could listen to for story and critical information. These audio recordings actually tied into the game itself, in addition to telling the backstory behind the game. Bioshock's tapes were for the most part only informative to those who were ultimately interested in the story. If you wanted to hack into the weapons cabinet in one area, you needed to find the PDA recording to hear the combination.
I will agree with you though, that Bioshock really changed the inventiveness of the first person shooter. It was the first game ever made that allowed you to craft your own types of ammo, and combine genetic powers of sorts to take down incredible enemies (Big Daddies). Every time you play Bioshock it's different...which is just amazing.

Bioshock is a great game. You can definitely feel the same type of visual vibe in Batman: AA. I, however, found that Bioshock's ending was a little anti-climactic, or the final boss was very predictable. By contrast, I found B: AA to have a much better consistent feel, though the boss battles aren't brain teasers. They are fun and epic, and they feel consistent throughout. Bioshock's became campy right there at the end, and I've seen and played through a lot of boss battles where you have to do the same basic thing. Metroid Prime comes to mind with weapon changes as the enemy changes states. I also think the detail and care to the environment being both suited to the story and the character, as well as being logical, remained a bit more consistent throughout in B: AA.
But, certainly Bioshock's story is very good, for the most part, and it's a very good atmospheric experience. I do think it builds and builds to the "Would you kindly?" reveal, which is great, then kind of just sits there until the end, though. I think Half-Life 2 and the episodes were far more cohesive stories, along with F.E.A.R. for atmosphere and story. I will put Bioshock up there as far as great story-driven games. When the second one comes to PC, hopefully I have enough money and such to buy it.:p

In my opinion, BioShock's story was a lot better than Arkham Asylum. I've always found Dini to be hugely overrated, and his Gotham Sirens series is horrendous so far. If BioShock had an anti-climatic boss battle, AA's final boss was even more disappointing. It was way too simplistic, and the ending simply fell flat. I also thought that Bane's battle was laughably uncreative and basically a repeat of the Titans. I wasn't crazy about the Titan storyline, and I feel that a new writer should be hired for the sequel.
I did enjoy BioShock's visual style more, too. I felt that AA's exterior was a bit uninspired sometimes, whereas BioShock had a more impressive art deco feel.

It was a decent game, started out really interesting but then got EXTREMELY BORING throughout the rest of the game and had to force myself to finish it.
I'm not excited for Bioshock 2. It looks like you just babysit the whole game as BigDaddy. Which I don't like the idea of playing as Big Daddy to begin with

I have to agree with Josh, above - after you got used to the surroundings, Bioshock got real boring real fast - I lost interest about halfway through. There's an earlier (07-21-09) thread on Bioshock here (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=91284) - to reiterate briefly what I said there:
The story was intriguing (if philosophically sloppy,) the graphics and atmospherics were phenomenal, but the player controls were absolute crapola.
I can't stand games where I'm fighting the control scheme rather than the Bad Nasties, and in Bioshock the rotten controls were compounded by the fact that whenever the zombies attacked (which was: always - disappointing AI too,) your controls and vision alike would instantly become sluggish to the point of unusable - like you were trying to do whitewater rafting through Class 5 rapids in a clawfoot bathtub, while stone drunk.
And the whole thing about pursuing and attacking little girls screaming in terror, with the option of killing them, was just creepy in all the wrong ways. Like: Someone had to sit down and think this stuff up, then get a team together to create all of that in a graphic 3D environment. Then we as players were asked to step into that role. That's: pursuing and attacking little girls screaming in terror, with the option of killing them. Yeek.
I'd really, really like to see cutting-edge gaming technology applied to something with the same intensity but a little lighter on the perv factor, like Grim Fandango II, or Mr. Bones: The Next Day or something. Just a crazy idea...

Um, the control scheme for Bioshock was nothing less, nor greater, than most any other FPS before, or certainly after it. It didn't slow on purpose when things attacked you, so I have no idea what you're talking about. I am sure if there was a true occurrence of this across the board on systems, it would have been made completely aware to everyone by now, but I have heard nothing on this as a problem either.
And the whole thing about pursuing and attacking little girls screaming in terror, with the option of killing them, was just creepy in all the wrong ways.
You dind NOT pursue little girls screaming in "terror." The Little Sisters were always shown as the ones telling the Big Daddies to do their bidding and weren't running from anything. In fact, when you have the option of "killing them" it is up to you to decide if these little monsters are worth saving. They only scream out at you then if you decide to save them, "No, No!" Saving them brings them back from the experiment they became. Otherwise, these little darlings are murderous monsters only bent on getting more Eve to add to their own collection and only loyal to these Frankenstienian Big Daddy Mutant creations that are their own soul link.
Truly, I've seen far worse depicted in a PG-13 comedy, (probably mostly to my own chagrin and revulsion...), but I certainly wouldn't fault the creative thinking team behind Bioshock for coming up with what they did. It's not perverted, nor over the edge.
