this doesnt really ahve anything to do with the game, but im curious.
personally i was (and am) so entranced by the Thief games, shortly after i played the first time, i found myslef trying to be sneaking in real life. this may be jsut me, but i find it pretty hard to transition back to reality after playing such an immersive game, i just go into sneaky mode sometimes.
has anyone else tried being sneaky in real life after playing any of the Thief games, just for the fun of it? and furthermore is anyone here really good at it (please, include humerous anecdotes if so)

I blackjacked my mom and put her unconscious body in a dark corner. It's weird though, the cops found her even though it's not their normal patrolling route. Then I couldn't reload my game and ended up in prison. I tried pickpocketing keys from a guard but they never lit up, so I couldn't grab them. I hope Thief 4 fixes these bugs, it took me over 10 years just to play another level.
Heh heh.
As for myself, I was already doing the sneaky thing as a teenager, and it's come in handy in my adulthood; however, sometimes when I'm having to do it now, I do think back on the game, but I'm usually not playing around, so it's not in a fun sense. It's from when I'm dealing with hostile, backstabbing coworkers, or people who shouldn't be in the building where I work, and other not-so-funny situations. Occasionally, though, I do slip into Garrett-mode to slip past friends and pop up in unexpected places, just to confuse them. :D

Sneaking around to see if you can better not get violent videogames banned... if all the sudden 1% of people who play a violent videogame become psychopathic killers, then yes, violent video games should be banned.
The problem is explaining causality vs relation... do videogames that are violent cause violence in others? or do violent people play violent videogames?
Probably the second one - which is why they aren't banned and never will be banned. MOST PEOPLE can tell the difference between things they should do in the real world, and what they do in games. That's why people like me and the others who tried sneaking are fine, because we know sneaking around isn't an inherently bad thing... but we're damn sure blackjacking people is, so we don't imitate that.
So far, only one person had said anything about violence, and they were being facetious.
Cue: "I was?"

After I played pokemon, I shoved my pet turtle into a ball and called him squirtle. He died.

I sometimes backstab the occasional security guard. But I have to scrub to get the blood off, and it really breaks the immersion.

I often find myself approaching the top of the ladder at work, attempting a strange 'backwards crouch walk' to latch onto the bloody thing, missing it horribly and plummeting down, before breaking my legs.
I do find myself paying attention to where the shadows are and well I'm in the UK so trying to avoid security cameras is a national sport plus I often shout at guards in movies for being stupid or standing in the wrong place while the other guy sneaks up like a herd of elephants wearing clogs and the guards just don't hear them
.... got me barred from the local cinema that

I used to go up stairs in such a way as to maximise my field of vision for a while, that's about all.
I think I am more of a Guard than a Thief, I tend to investigate any noise I hear.

It's only natural to be sneaky.
It's the people who don't actively practice their sneaking skills that are the ones that are out of place and have become detached from their natural reality.
Keep an eye on them, as they're probably guards...

I make a habit of leaning against doors, listening for footsteps, before trying every key in on my key ring, then frustrated, throw a iron hammer to open it. Once opened, ill lean around the door frame, scanning the room for gold.

I don't know if this one counts because it is more assassin's creed blend-in style than sneaking in the dark but here goes:
I used to cycle past a farmhouse everyday and I nabbed an apple each time I went by. these things happened at daylight next to a busy road. So I can't really say I "Sneaked" to get an apple. I just took it and carried on with my life. I'ts just one of these things that make my day after a busy day of work, and the best tasting apples are stolen ones, fresh from the tree! :)

For the last 9 years, everytime I look at a map I hear Garrett saying "better check my map" like at the very beginning of running interference in T2. It was my first experience in the Thief world and it seems to be firmly embedded in the front of my brain because quite often I say it aloud :nut:

I thought this was quite relevant to this thread, its Thumper's guid to the strange and unusual in Thief DP. There are a few sections throughout that show that you have been playing Thief to much. Here are a few of my favourites.
Heres the link (on thief-thecircle.com)

#153 You decide to search for the sentence with the word "doetten" in your local snd.crf-file and find it immediately, because you know the meaning of "ab1a3na5.wav" and must only listen through 6 files to get the right one. - Lytha
#198 You've removed every unnecessary key from your keyboard so that they don't get in the way. - Archdaemon
#209 You wake up and see your family in the hall, and thinking they are ratmen/apemen, you blackjack them and scream, "Can't smell me now can you!!". - Dangus
#306 While talking with co-workers, you realize that you are referring to your boss as "the Sir". - CardinalFang
#335 A close friend dies and you find yourself fretting about what new objectives you have. - Lightfoot

Did they heal you?
:p
I seem to remember the cheese and the apples in TMA & TDP sounding exactly the same when you ate them ... I wonder what type of cheese it was
Yeah, that was in the pre-patched version. It's been fixed.

I was impressed that Garrrett could eat an entire deer leg in one bite. Monster!

It wasn't my first Thief experience but other than that I am also guilty of this.

I try to 'frob' suspicious looking candle holders that are attached to walls.
Also, if I'm playing and someone walks into the room and makes a noise I often want to shout out "SHHHH! They'll hear you!"
Luckily I stop myself just before :D

And I thought I was the ONLY one who lost touch with reality after Thief came out. I, too, reenacted Garrett's motions in real life.....while at WORK.
About ten years ago, when I was DEEP into Thief Dark Project, I was working the early Saturday shift at my place of employment. Only about 20% of the lights were on and no more than 12 people in the entire building. It's a big building and I had to go from one end to the other numerous times doing my job. Lots of long, mostly dark hallways....empty aisles....deep shadows. Many times I would be walking down a long dark hallway and would notice someone enter the hallway from a room. I knew they were coming towards me, but they had NO clue I was also coming towards them. I immediately ducked into a cross hallway (pitch black) and watched as this person (whom I probably knew) walk within 2 feet of me and right by me. I WAS GARRETT at that moment. I didn't have a blackjack handy so I just watched them disappear into the gloom.
I played that WEIRD role playing scenario many times over those saturday mornings. I slinked in the shadows of the aisles, playing the harmless voyeur. I watched coworkers, oblivious to me watching them. CREEPY? Indeed. Ten years later, I now look back at my actions and say WTF!!! Heck, if a mere video game can do that to a 33 year old man, then it is either one hell of a video game, or I am one sick MFer. Perhaps a little of both....moreso the former than the latter.

Well, you sure liked TDP :P
I wanted to play those scenarios to but I found myself thinking... what do you say if you get caught? So I didn't do it.

Maybe we should make a real life game for sneaking... that should be fun...
I usually slip into sneak mode when I'm going to escape classes, avoid confrontations and "borrowing". I never hide in the dark, (no night vision), only in plain sight...

because hiding in plain sight is the way to go:
