View Full Version : Bullet Time with the mechanical eye

Clearly, we need to be able to use bullet time with Garret's special eye, right? RIGHT?!

There's nothing silly about imagining Garrett doing a sideways jump flip, nocking an arrow and firing it into a guard in super slow motion.

Yea, there is... Garrett isn't superhuman. He doesn't live in the Matrix, he's not a superhero, he's not even an assassin. He steal for a living.

Besides, the animations would be a pain in the toochus to build. :D

We have hard evidence that Garrett is superhuman. Sometimes guards cannot spot him even when they walk into him, he has longer arms than Mr Tickle, and he can make that huge jump to the tower in the Lost City. It is, therefore, reasonable for him to be able to pick up buildings and throw them to other continents. Anyone disputing this is simply ignoring the facts presented in the previous games.

I've always suspected he's able to teleport at will. It was the lack of any intermediate travelling between the missions that gave me the clue.

The game "Sniper Elite" made great use of "bullet time" for really long kill shots etc. But, after a while it got very annoying. I'd thought about suggesting this option as something to use the eye for, but it's of no real practical use.

The eye should be like Clu's Bit from TRON and give him yes and no advice, like a very limited magic 8-ball.
Oh, wow! A TRON reference. Love that movie!!...
I can picture Garrett sneaking down a corridor on carpet with his eye saying, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" and then unexpectedly hits a steel grate, "No! No! No! No! No!" :)

If the eye could scan the environment and give a HUD highlighting where all the enemies are on the screen, their vitals, their faction, their weapons, their weaknesses, their pickpocketable items, their alert level, and the best path to take when walking through an area, that'd be great. Also including perimeter outlines of the surrounding terrain would be masterful. You know, show us where the carpet areas are, versus steel, versus moss, versus wood, etc... along with the anticipated decibel volume increase of stepping on those surfaces. Wow, Thief IV would be so awesome and just like every other cool game if this were done.

You could insert THE MECHANICAL EYE into the Logbeast and have him/it walk around and explore the entire level, maybe even grab some phat lewt while he/it is at it. We could even RAISE ITS STATS WHEN LEVELING UP so that it can run faster or gain kewl abilities. THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES. Are the Devs getting this?

Captain567

I think that at the beginning of the game, Garrett should be really badly wounded, maybe crushed under a loose rafter that he pulled on with his rope arrow. Anyways, they pull out his mangled body and he falls unconscious, maybe into a coma. He's rescued by his apprentice, and she takes him to the remnant of the Mechanist's, forced into the criminal underground, and they make a mechanized brain. This gives Garrett enhanced abilities, and better connection with his eye.

Because of this massive favour, Garrett is in the service of the Mechanists and must do as they please, and he uncovers their plot to take over their city, and must stop them. What do you guys think?

I do think it'd be interesting to see some Mechanist remnants, though.

I have thought about the possibility that something could go wrong with Garrett's eye. It could be tapped into so someone could see what he sees. It would cause Garrett concern like when the Keepers knew he was going to be someplace, or Karras knew he was coming, or Viktoria knew Garrett would meet Lotus--he'd still not be rid of people knowing his next move before he does. We know it must transmit to rotate the Scouting Orb.

Even as a joke thread, some of these posts resemble many people's serious opinions about what Thief IV really needs.

In light of that, I think Garrett needs a Interwoven-nanotech Kevlar polymer cloak that makes him impervious to all damage. His eye also needs AI-compatibility that allows infrared vision and bio-molecular tracking of guards. He needs five thousand daggers up his sleeve that can kill instantly when it hits anywhere in the enemy's body and a sword that can cut through stone and wood with one blow. Not to mention a super-duper magnet that can attract all loot from all over the mission straight to his position even though the loot already glows and is easy enough to find.

Oh, and his bow needs a range of over infinity six billion that can kill in one hit, even moss arrows!!!

jtr7
07-24-2009, 12:27 AM
Just in case... I don't want to see Garrett's eye used as a spying device by someone else. :)

I want to see it hacked into to change the frequency of its transceiver in an attempt to cook his socket and short out his brain, but lucky for Garrett, he'd juuust taken it out to get some sleep.

I'm kidding.

Here's a good way we can upgrade Garrett's eye:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vn2Goe51Gg

Don't forget, we can make it be a thermal imaging eye too, and be like a Predator!

jtr7

You read my mind! If there was any infrared vision, I'd like it to be like a Predator's visor'd vision, where it doesn't illuminate the world, but shows heat radiating off the AIs. (Not really, but it could make for a nice screensaver to just watch the AI patrol.)

esme

I won't buy the game if garrett doesn't have a laser coming from his eye. Seriously how would you even think of rushing a level without one, a laser is deadly, silent and perfect for shooting around a corner using a mirror-type object to bend the laser. goodbye fire arrow, say hello to the shoop-da-whoop-eye laser.
Get yours today!
I'm positively serious about all the above.

Nate

Jtr7, that's PERFECT! Garrett can be the Predator Thief. While he is out stealing, he has to shift between different vision types to locate loot.

PLUS, he also gets a Predator stealth suit complete with the shoulder mounted Ion canon.

ToMegaTherion

The game manual could then include in the Hints section: "You are not a tank. No, you are much more powerful than a tank."

I think the Ion cannon is a little over the top. It should be there, but replace your bow as your shots! I have to laugh, thinking about using Predator's thermal vision, that swishy electronic and beeping sound, and watching the triangle swirl around a torch, ready to be doused by a shoulder-fired water arrow.
