View Full Version : Anyone else love Iron Man?

Since The Dark Knight is one of my favorite superhero movies (and I credit it for renewing interest in comic films), I should also give credit to Iron Man, which was just as fantastic. Robert Downey Jr. was excellent, the visuals were spectacular, and everything was just top-notch. I can't wait for Iron Man 2, which will introduce Mickey Rourke as the villain. They released a new image today showing Stark, Whiplash, and Black Widow:

What did you think of Iron Man, also one of the best comic adaptations?

I really did like Iron Man, it had a certain quirkyness to it that you had to love. Robert Downey Jr is such a solid actor, you really can't go wrong with him. I really don't think that it was the same quality as TDK but it was up there. One of the better comic book films.

I thought the iron man movie was good but a little overrated, TDK is way better both as a super hero movie and a movie overall ( in my opinion of course)

I liked both a lot. Iron Man set the bar and TDK topped it, but at the same time I like how both of the characters (Tony and Bruce) are different kinds of heroes. If the whole world was dark like Batman it would be completely depressing. It's good to mix it up every once in awhile and I think (box office and mood wise) that Iron Man was the white knight to The Dark Knight.

It was okay. I think they could have used a better villain for the first, and now Don Cheadle is taking over for Terrence Howard. I hate it when they change actors like that but I heard there were financial factors involved. Downey Jr. did a decent job as Stark, even though he was pretty much himself in the film. Spider-Man ranks up there with the better comic book films, probably the best Marvel film followed closely by Iron Man.

I'd rank both Iron Man and TDK at 9/10. They were both fantastic.

I thought Iron Man set a good standard for future comic movies. After being a member of this forum I have become more critical of TDK. I also agree that switching actors like James Rhodes (Iron Man) and Rachel Dawes (TDK) is distracting. The first Spiderman was good, but it fell apart after that. X-Men was similar to Spiderman in terms of the later movies lacking quality. The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton was decent. More MARVEL movies are coming out in the next couple of years and I doubt that I will like any of them. Why is Nick Fury being played by Samuel L. Jackson? Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern? I don't think we should start switching the ethnic background of superheroes.

You know John Stewart isn't the only Green Lantern right? The movie will be based on the 2nd (and most BA) Green Lantern Hal Jordan. The above post above already covered your Nick Fury confusion, though I prefer the original Fury over the ultimate any day.

Wait... what? Aren't you the one who wrote "Unpopular Opinions: The Dark Knight?" This doesn't make sense.
Oh, and IM was good but needed more action. I'm afraid IM2 will really suck though, due to it's fast production, and it's villains' MOs seeming to be recycled from Iron Monger. RDJ will put on an amazing performance though.

I thought it was awesome. Great movie to start things off. Loved it as an origin story, and Downey as Stark. Im not too much of a fan of the comic book Iron Man cause he seems like hes on the wrong side of things. However in this movie, they showed how badass Stark can be. Im a fan of Favreau and Swingers.
I wouldnt say it was better than TDK tho. Youll have to come back down from that cloud.
Nick Fury is still white on Earth 616. Chill out Warmarchine. Ya know, with a name like that, why ask that question?

Uh, some people might disagree with you, so there's no "cloud" to come down, because your view on a film isn't fact. I actually slightly prefer Iron Man over TDK, despite giving them 9/10s.

Its not a fair comparison, we can compare IM2 with TDK (even tho id take Batman over IM anyways). Id rather compare BB and Iron Man if you wanted to. And ill take Batman in a landslide. I agree completely with whoever said that the villain lacked in Iron Man. It was a couple action sequences with some cutsy moments. I really liked the cave part tho. His escape was probably the best part of the movie for me.

i liked both TDK and Iron Man. I like How Iron Man is extremely well done bu ti feel some of the characters could of used some more fleshing out. TDK was also Well done like Iron Man but The Batsuit and the whole transfer to a chicago style city kinda ruined it a bit for me.
now if we were talking villain wise between IronMan and TDK Joker would pwn the iron monger in terms of being a character.

As was already said, Ultimate Nick Fury is black, and specifically modeled after Jackson. Meanwhile, there are five human Green Lanterns, and John Stewart, while my favorite of the bunch, is the only black one. Ryan Reynolds is playing Hal Jordan, the second Green Lantern (though I think he'd make a better Kyle Rayner).

Iron Man is my favorite superhero above all else. The movie was pretty good. Some people say the fight scene between Iron Monger and Iron Man was short, but think about this, if there were a fight between two incredibly powered robotic suits, how long do you think it'd last?

I'm really tired of people saying they switched Green Lantern's ethnicity .I'm willing to bet that your only exposure to GL was on the Justice League cartoon.Hal Jordan was the first GL (Alan Scott's got a magic ring, not scientific)and he was a caucasian male(like Reynolds).

It's hard to skirt the line of an arrogant, sarcastic jerk that is so without offending people too much. They just did it in Iron Man, ha. He had enough merit to his beliefs, convictions, that it made him not so shallow. I liked it a lot. The whole cave section and him battling later the terrorists and the tank – all was great. And yes, who but Tony Stark would then brazenly announce his secret identity to the world:p Looking forward to the next one.

What I especially liked about Iron Man was how natural some of the sequences felt. In the Middle Eastern war scenes, it had a genuine "war movie" feel, and each bit was done exceptionally well. I also greatly appreciate how shaky and realistic some of the flight bits looked, as if the movie was occasionally a fine documentary.

Eh, it might be spoilerish, especially if you dont know much about Justin Hammer so here:
Well we all see how rubbish Whiplash's costume is. It has so many visible spots that Iron Man could just 1 shot the guy. Justin Hammer is a competition guy to Tony Stark, Whiplash has the russian name of the 1st original Crimson Dynamo (think Iron Mongler but far superiour) so Justin Hammer most likely will upgrade Whiplash's costume into Crimson Dynamo. :)

Robert Downey Jr and Tony Stark share things in common with each other
- both intelligent
- both rich
- both abusers of substances like drugs and alcohol even though Downey now isn't but hey Stark is and always will be an alcoholic
- different paths, same approach for example Stark producing weapons, saw what was being done with it, stopped it, and you can guess with Downey

The Samuel Jackson issue:
I'm black, but I really could care less who played Nick Fury before I saw the ending to Iron Man. When I saw Jackson on screen and I remembered the Ultimate version, I was like, "YEAH!" He looks almost just like the Fury on the comic and I believe he has the authoritative demeanor to pull it off. That's why I'm pulling for him now but still, white Fury black Fury not much of a difference. It doesn't hurt or help the character in any way whatsoever. Hell, make all the Furys of the rainbow and he'd still be a hard as nails American smoking a Cuban cigar stunt driving cars from Europe.
The Downey Factor:
Have you guys watched the original Iron Man animated series? Go to youtube watch an ep and come back and tell me that Downey wasn't a good choice for Iron Man. Older, true. Good choice though.
The REAL Problem:
Every hero movie under the sun is always doing the love interest angle. Sometimes it's great, but when you got a girl in constant danger it gets a little stale. True, TDK had Rachel comeback (character not the actress, lol) but Rachel was one of those "I'm an Amazon" women and Bruce got shut down at the end because she couldn't let her armor down. So he was basically obsessing over the same girl instead of some random one because it was a continuation of that story. I love how Iron Man played it off too. Tony had a one night stand, begins to notice his assistant, she shuts him down when he tries to have a romantic moment with her more or less on the principle that he never noticed her before and that he left her at that party by herself. That was really funny. Just too good. In fact so good I kinda wished that something had happened. And she wasn't as annoying as Rachel was in Batman either. But yeah, as long as neither of these two movies keep playing into the damsel in distress love interest thing for added subplot it'll be cool. Spiderman can't be saved at this point because it's always going to be about saving MJ for the climax. I'll give you a second to think about all the ending fights so you can remember MJ in all of them.........
............
...........
And done.
Batman and Iron Man are the best movies out there right now imo. These franchises still have a chance to set the bar even higher for their genre. Hopefully, this gives us (the fans) something worth looking forward to if everyone else decides to step up.
