View Full Version : Guards and other NPC's - great lines and voice acting

Similar to the thread on Garrett-isms, I wanted to comment on how great I think the voice acting has been even for the guards. For example, I think the fellow who does "Benny" (or "Sinclair" in TDS) is priceless. Recall some of his lines and the expression used in the voice ...
"Come on out, then"
"Juuuust make one litt'l noise"
...and when he's running around frantically looking for back-up: "We've got a perp ... code 7... uh, 18..."
"Come back here...you coward!"
"My overshoes....where are they?"
I think my favorite one is from TDS when he's trying to articulate to a comrade what he just heard:
"Sounded like a ssssssound of some kind..."
Good stuff. Maybe not central to the game, but adds quality voice acting and humor.

*squeek*... *squeek*
New boots. Gonna take me a week to break in the cursed things. And until then I'll be walking like someone's grandma.
*walks around further with leather squeeking*
that one always cracked me up =P

For example, Dan Thron did both voices for the Life of the Party archers' fight. :)
The humorous writing for all of the guards needs a come back, and let these two deliver their lines the way only they can. TDS was lacking the Monty Python touches that rewarded the player for actually listening.
"Hey! Bad guy!"
"'Ouch! I'm dead!'"
I did not realise Dan Thron did both voice for the Life of the Party archers fight, which is priceless. :D. Though I knew he had done others. You are mindful of information, You must read a lot, I missed that one.
It is true the humour of the guards do need a comeback, it is rewarding just to listen to them.
Stephen Russell is so talented with his voice work, so are many of the others too to make the character's so many different people.
Dan Thron as well is wonderful I loved the voice of the eye. I can not remember all the conversation of the Eye in the Museum. My TDS is not loaded just now.
Something like "Hello little man we meet again". His voice is amazing. That is the thing about Thief with all the humour in it. The guards are so funny with their quips.

Thanks for posting that. :D I had forgotten the Dialogue. Thought It was wrong. :o
I must Reinstall TDS again. I had a problem with it playing.
Dan Thron voicing the Eye is excellent, great script to listen too.
"Do you miss your eye, little man? I've seen many interesting things with it. Some day I might come looking for the other one...."
Maybe he will. ;)

What a timely coincidence! Our other favorite male voice actor and cutscene artist extraordinaire, Daniel Thron in TRONReboot:

That is funny actually., Though kind of odd :D
Talking of Art, did not a lot of the Devs and actors have their pictures on the walls in TDS?

With all the Thief quotes, artifacts and knowledge jtr7 has at his disposal, I'm starting to think he worked on Thief 1, 2 and 3. Who are you... really?? Well, at least maybe worked on the first two. And I'm digging the Tron goodness. Keep it up.

Unfortunately. Yet another example where TDS changed things for the worse, imo. What happened to all the interesting and mysterious classic artwork in Thief that I used to pause and look at? That used to leave me in wonder about the Thief universe. Oh, they decided to make 30 portraits instead and hang them everywhere. Even better, they're portraits of people who worked on the game. Wow... (shakes head in disbelief over TDS... yet again.. ). There is no end to the TDS nonsense. (I struggle to think of even one thing that was better in TDS than T2. Handheld torches... maybe. Yeah, that's probably one. Dust particles in the light? Yeah, sure. Hmm, well okay, I think that's the end of the list already! I'll go look at TDS-loving threads to hopefully find more.)

Why you have a dig at me on something which was a jest on my part, I was pointing out as it was rather amusing more than anything.
Actually the dialogue from the Eye is classic, further up I asked about it . As to the paintings , it was a good concept for a change and original I found it rather funny and jtr7 was good to collect them and put them here together. :D
Besides I think TDS does have a good story, besides other things.

There could have been more art works, to look at. To be moddled on the Dev's rather good I think. No Stpehen Russell or Dan Thron or is there? see Eric. :p
Wow That is so very interesting, The Thief Encyclopedia, sounds as if it will be amazing.
A true Thief fan and such in depth work.Very inspiring. :thumb:

Wow, jtr7, that's true fan dedication! Good work. It's awesome to have all this information you gather at our fingertips. And I've been thru Flagstaff, on my way from the Grand Canyon to the Phoenix area. Can't say I stopped there, but I remember some signage as we drove through in the twilight hours.
Oh, and GIllie, no no no... I'm sorry, I wasn't at all digging at you. The paintings just reminded me of another thing I was disappointed with in TDS. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I guess I actually don't mind that there were so many portraits, it's just what jtr7 said that they were all done by the same artist and there's not any variety in the theme of the paintings (they were all portraits).
Esme - That's awesome. Were those things in FMs 'before' TDS, or after? Not that it matters, but just wondering if TDS may have influenced that.
TDS was released in 2004 and this link (http://www.thiefmissions.com/tafferstavern/Thief2_Dromed2_Tutorials.zip) from the taffers tavern (http://www.thiefmissions.com/tafferstavern/tuts.html) is a tutorial for creating a guard that carries a lantern and the doc file is dated 2001 so that predates TDS, I'll check on the dust motes and shafts of light
--EDIT--
Vigil seems to be the expert on light shafts and has downloadable ones for use in fan missions at http://thief.washboardabs.net/models/#shafts the last update of which was 03-12-2004 not sure if that's American or English dating so it could be 3rd December or 12th March either way there's a fair chance light shafts predate TDS too, if you really want to know when he came up with them you can contact him and ask at http://thief.washboardabs.net/contact/ ... oh yeah the light shafts incorporate dust motes
there are quite a few things that people go "wow thats cool" at in TDS that can be done using the TMA DarkEngine they just weren't in TMA, a lot do need extra scripting modules but they run quite happily, FM builders have had a lot of time to work on these things and the results can be extremely impressive

Okay thanks, I was wrong jumping in too quick, I misunderstood too. :flowers:
I see what you mean about the portraits, they were all portraits not paintings and perhaps
Should have been more different ones to gaze at. :)
