I didn't have any trouble installing the game, that part is working just fine. It loaded up and skipped all the videos but i was okay with that as long as it would let me play. I managed to get in the door to the side, couldn't find a key and tried to knock the door in with my sword.... the game crashed and from that point forward I just can't get it to work quite right.

So after trying a variety of things suggested here I managed only to make things worse and succeeded only at causing the game to crash before even bringing up the menu screen. At that point I reinstalled and started again from scratch.

My system specs are as follows:
Windows Vista Basic 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 1.8 ghz
2.00 gigs of ram

I've already deleted the semi-colon in front of safe texture manager
User Account Control is off because it bugs the hell out of me so there's no run as administrator option (I tried before with running as administrator to no effect)
Without running it in compatability mode it crashes before reaching a menu
Running it in compatability for windows 98 allows the movies to play through and the menus to load up, but after the mission itself loads the game crashes.

I've seen several people told to set affinity for cpus... im running a 32 bit operating system so only one is being used but just for the hell of it i tried switching which processor the game was using. There was no change in effect.

Also, I tried the ddfix and that just made the game crash before it could load the menu, and I had to reinstall before i could get it to at least load up to the menu again.

What can I do to make this awesome game run again?

Not sure what you can do to make the game run, but I hope you figure it out. It's sometimes a fine science to get these games to work on newer systems. To get cutscenes working, did you try this?

Go Start > Run, then type regsvr32 "c:\your\path\to\thief\LGVID.AX" where c:\your\path\to\thief\ matches your own path. Oh, you're on Vista, I think you have to hold the Windows Key and R down to get the "Run" screen up.

That's what works for me every time. You'll know if it works right away because if you then load the game and click "intro" from the main menu, if the video plays then it worked. In which case, you can then load your game and happily watch cutscenes as you proceed thru the game. I enter the regsvr32 thing before each time I play Thief.

You probably have this, but here's where I got it from: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#movies
(I haven't looked to see how that tech support FAQ compares to Eidos', but you might see something new there?)

PS: I hope you get more patient with exploring in the game so you don't have to start knocking all the doors down :) That's not how Thief is meant to be played, in most peoples' opinion. I'll give you a hint if you want... spoiler... on that first mission, go into that side door, then turn right and go through that next door into the adjacent room. The key for the next door is located on the ledge next to the door on the left, about chest high. I think it's a silver key. I'm sure you'll see it now...

32 bit has nothing to do with whether or not it is running on 1 or 2 CPUs. All combinations of platform and CPUs (or cores) are possible. Are you sure you changed affinity correctly to run on only one?

DDFIX only works if the resolution set in game at the Options menu, or in CAM.CFG with a text editor, matches the resolution set in DDFIX.INI. Otherwise, it crashes.

There are other things in the sticky thread. It wouldn't hurt to give your system specs and say exactly what you did.
