Anybody else a little shocked about the demo where the player who was horrible by the way, snuck up behind 3 villans stealth killing each one. The best part being they were a few feet away form each other the guy grunts as he's getting taken down and the other guys are still poised guns up but don't hear or turn around. what are your thoughts....I'm still for this game but I hope they correct that...
Black Mask
06-06-2009, 06:01 AM
I wouldn't have expected them to hear it... The grunt is just something they added in for Batman to hear, he is covering their mouths... Besides, even if they did hear something, they'd want to keep focus on the door, where they think Batman is coming in.

They probably had the demo on God Mode. I hope it isn't as easy as that.

You could still hear the grunting, as it would come through if he was holding their mouth. Their peripheral vision should have detected something two feet away, and the smack you hear when Batman grabs them should have caught the attention of one.
Black Mask

I'd still think they'd be keeping firmly focused on the other end of the room... And I don't think the smack and grunts are really 'there'... just something for us to hear... Do you know what I mean, or am I going over your heads?

That makes absolutely no sense. The smack and grunts are both realistic reactions, and they are not something for the player to simply hear. Sounds and sights apply to the thugs and Batman. That's a bad way to justify poor AI, but I think it was simply on God Mode for demo purposes. I think they should at least react, instead of standing there as if they heard NOTHING.

i agree completely. this isnt the first time someone has bought this issue up.
im sure the first lvl is a tutorial so having 3 guards together like this is a great way to learn the basics of silent takedowns.im sure you wont be taking down multiple thugs this way anywhere else in the game.
also. you play as a dude dressing up in a bat costume fighting a massive croc, plant like women, and a man who gains his strengh through a green like substance. this issue should be the least of your worrys no?:)

Agreed, I think of all the settings they probably had it on recruit/rookie(below normal). I might play this game just on Hard to get the Batman feeling.

Even when he gets out of the vent, and talking to Oracle, the thugs are right around the corner. It was just a demo, i expected it to be pretty easy.

it wouldnt have a point if guards came when you kill stealthily

The sound of the strike is probably magnified for our enjoyment. I don't know how many of you have ever punched someone in the gut, but it's not all that loud. And it's pretty dark in the asylum, so maybe the thugs can't see so well.
The vent thing was kinda funny, but Batman pushed kinda slowly with his feet and removes the vent cover carefully after that, so maybe the guard is just oblivious. And his back was turned.
I think we can assume that Batman isn't yelling into his Batphone when talks to Oracle, unlike far too many people with cellphones. It's loud enough for us to hear, but Batman would probably be speaking very softly if we didn't need to hear what he had to say.

i really think batman shouldn't have to punch a dude in the back before he silently takes him down anyways... i can understand like a pressure point squeeze to make their legs collapse or something but it just doesn't seem as "stealthy cool" to me when he hits them first. I think Rocksteady should really consider changing some of the silent takedowns before release

i know i know but aren't they looking for feedback from E3 and these forums? it said in one of the interviews that they were constantly reading the forums to see what they can improve or change to make the game better for the fans.
idk, i don't know much when it comes to game development but i believe it sounds reasonable. and if all else fails, i can still hope! :D

I doubt they over look the forums...
At this point in the video game process, going back and adding stuff that we want doesn't make sense seeing as the game comes out in two months. The best they can do is fix glitches, Make the graphics a bit better and fix sound. It's not like they are going to add like 8 more modes and 12 new levels are something.

You guys are overreacting to a minor, unimportant detail. it's a game for Pete's sake, it wouldn't be cool if the goons heard you and shot you down just like that. It's part of the gameplay, you can't change that.

ye calm down. its like one of the first levels so of course its going to be easy to silent takedown someone. if it was too hard then people wouldnt be able to pass the first level because they wouldnt have experiance

So i know that Sefton Hill told us that there would be the three basic levels of difficulty but has anyone heard of there being a fourth level of difficulty being unlocked after you beat the game on hard or something? Something similar to like how in GearsOfWar you had to "unlock" insane mode

As everyone else has said, there are many aspects to this.
1. It's the tutorial, so the AI would be dumbed down for the sake of learning
2. What would the point be of a silent takedown if it wasn't silent?
3. I'm pretty sure there isn't going to be many if any situations where grunts are just standing there. In the gameplay I've seen the bad guys are all wandering around a room separate, and even when they get scared and group closer together there's still the ability to pick them off.
Besides, you can't be too picky about realism in a game where a dude dresses up like a bat and goes to an insane asylum to fight a giant cocodile man, an ancient warrior who uses magic pits to heal himself, a guy who shoots ice and a woman who controls plants.

Um, yeah. If a Silent Takedown wasn't "silent", then it would just be a Takedown. It would be pretty stupid for Batman to be like, "Hehe, I'm gonna use my Silent Takedown." and then when he did it, some random thug will come out of nowhere and be like, "I heard a Silent Takedown! Everyone, GET BATMAN!". And then you're dead. So yeah, Silent Takedowns are SILENT. You have to remember, this is Batman, the man who can do anything. He can see into your SOUL.
HELL YEAH he is the only person in the galaxy who can beat CHUCK F****** NORRIS:lol::lol::lol::lol:

06-21-2009, 09:42 AM
This is obviously easy but I really don't think it will change since it is a 'silent' takedown. I think the biggest thing to point out here is the ability of a person to completely pick a part a game that has next to no known flaws. That's impressive.

For all we know, he could have been playing on God Mode or a toned down setting for the purpose of continuing the demo. When developers demo a product, they usually turn it on God Mode to ensure that they don't die during the course of the demo.

apart from the fact batman does not kill
your in a asylum full of stone gate thugs and loony inmates
who would be grunting, screaming and making lots of noise
the thugs would have been in arkham would think that sound like that would be normal
plus you got the joker talk into the P.A system all the time
who going hear that

Wasn't there another vid where some guy tried to rush a silent takedown and another thug spotted Batman almost immediately? If I recall, the guy died under the hail of gunfire. I think I'll be agreeing with the it's probably just the tutorial side of the argument. Hopefully, when you takedown people mid sentence as they are talking to each other, they'll take notice and take you out. Or if you're fast enough, they turn around to see their buddy lying on the ground unconscious and they start freaking out even more because they were there and didn't hear or see a thing.

Again, Black Mask was very much so right on the guards focusing on the door. The guards know Batman is on his way, so they are scared. Every criminal in Gotham would be. And with their little grunt it's not loud enough for somebody to hear 5 ft. away. You overexaggerated with 2 ft. They wouldn't hear, it's a muffle btw, not a grunt. YOu can't hear muffles. You guys just need something to complain about. Complain about how Batman's boots aren't black enough. I mean Oh my God, have you seen those? They are almost black with a tint of purple! Geez.

Yeah, I noticed that too. It has me concerned, but it's nothing game breaking.
Hopefully you'll have multiple ways of dealing with groups of thugs like that. I'm hoping that you'll be able to grab enemies without knocking them out (like in Splinter Cell, using them as a human shield). Whilst doing that, hopefully we can pull out equip our Batarangs and free aim. Just with those two abilities, I'd be able to do some pretty dynamic stuff taking down enemies.

There's enough options without needing to grab enemies, like stringing them to the ceiling, etc.
Still, I think the dev was playing on God Mode, which tones down the AI so they don't die while they show off the game. I've seen videos where the thugs saw the player and shot at him, even while he was running.

God Mode isn't a "cheat". It's a developer mode used to ensure that they don't die while showing off the demo for a game. In God Mode, developers can't take damage during a demo, and it oftentimes tones down the AI. Furthermore, I was stating that the AI has reacted to player movements in other videos, even when sneaking from behind. I didn't specify which one, so it was a bit of an assumption to think that I meant this combat room.
I get this God Mode "stuff" from the fact that Eurogamer and Kotaku both mentioned that the developers had the game demo on God Mode to ensure that they didn't die while showing off the game to news networks for gaming. For example, in the IGN videos, they had God Mode on to make sure that an unexpected death didn't interrupt the flow of the demo.

I see what you mean, Croc. Not everyone knows about God Mode, but it's what developers use when they're showing off a demo. When they have a limited amount of time, they can't afford to die during the presentation, hence their reason for turning on a private mode that eliminates damage, dynamic AI, etc.
Also, the part with the thugs turned around was still in the Intensive Treatment tutorial. It's possible that the AI becomes more clever as the game progresses and you exit the beginning mission, which is supposed to show you the specifics of the game without making it too difficult. As Sefton said, thugs eventually receive "shock collars" from the Joker, the ability to shoot down your perches, etc. I wouldn't let this presentation worry me, truthfully.

The only reason you hear the grunt is because you hear what Batman is hearing. You hear what it sounds like right where Batman is so you would hear the faint muffle as the pass out.
By the way the grunt's are s**t scared because they know he's near If I was a grunt I would be more focused on wetting my pants than the environment around me.
