On the map "The Life of the Party" in thief 2 there is a secret ghost that is very hard to find.
I don't remember the map very well but I will try to describe the way.
If you sneak around on the roofs in the city you will come to a window where a young man and a woman is talking. If you seen them you gotta remember what I'm talking about!
The young man seems a bit insane and says something like "I'm the ratchild".. Remember him?
Around that place is another window, i think its behind you around the corner, that window you can climb in to, inside is just a small corridor that is shaped like mirrored L if i remember right and its just a torch and a little desk in the room with a note, i don't remember what was on the note but i think it was a letter to someone or a dairy. Now i don't remember if there was a room there also or just a closed door. I searched the place for a long long time trying lots of stuff but i cant find any secrets in it.
Anyways, if you hide far away outside that window and wait for a while a ghost will appear!
Its a man that walks to the window standing there looking out over the rooftops.
Sometimes he walks away into the corridor and comes back. Sometimes hes away and don't come back for a long time. I think he stands infron of the desk, if i remember right you can hear his footsteps as he walk.
If you walk close he disappear, i think he fast walks back into the corridor where you cant see him and disappears. I tried to rush there and climb in too see where he went but hes always gone when I'm there.
I don't remember well but i think he might have been mumbled something also, or just *sigh* as he looked out the window. (might be very wrong here)
What about this ghost? Why is he walking around there? Is it an egg? An unfinished secret? Who is he?? I never hear about him and on google i cant find any other person talking about this ghost. Any one else that seen him?
Anyways, this think is still lurking in my mind and remembering me of the thief games.
I want too see stuff like this in the new thief, secrets are always fun!

Hehe, I remember that ghost in Thief 2. And also that group of dancing zombies in the same game, outside Truarts Estate I think? Or was it the City Watch Station? One of them.
But yeh, there should be some really crazy easter eggs in this game.

There was a lot of potential to have lots of easter eggs in TDS. If they keep the city hubs and make sure to do them well, it would be like having the first half of Life of the Party all the time. I like being able to go into houses, sneak past normal people, hear about what's going on. There was a bit of that in TDS, but it didn't always have the same feeling of "ooh! I found a secret!" that TMA gave us. (No, I'm not talking about the little gong noise and the secrets stats at the end of the mission, but that certainly let you know that you had found something special)
Possibly what lessened that feeling for me in TDS was that a lot of these little side quests were actually necessary for the missions. Finding a map for the next level was something that had to be done, and I didn't feel rewarded for doing the extra work. Whereas in the first two, Garrett did all that work for me. ;)

Every game needs an easter egg or three! And they don't always have to outright break the mood. It can come in the form of a tribute to another game, or from a developer's inside joke, or in the form of a pop culture reference.
Here's an example:
Standard graverobbing mission. Garrett is after some ancient treasure or lost city or whatnot.
Hot Tip: 250 gold:
Garrett,
If you're heading down into the Builder's Catacombs, I heard tell of an evil spirit that permeates the very walls of the tomb. They say he was a brilliant inventor priest who saw himself as a deity equal to the Builder, and was cursed for it. If you want entrance to the Forgotten Rotunda, place a Hammer's holy symbol in the center of a triangle of torches. No thief has ever dared to venture into there, which means that it hasn't been plundered yet. You could make a killing.
(inside the Forgotten Rotunda):
http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd319/BaronSarnoth/T4Segg.jpg
"Behold thyself, Mortal... A pitiful creature of soft flesh and blood... Trembling and fidgeting as you skulk about in the shadows of my domain... How can you hope to triumph against steel and stone?"
...... Too heavy-handed for an easter egg? ;)
Who else has ideas for fun easter eggs that would give us a chuckle in game?
Yeah, that "ghost" was a Keeper waiting for Garrett, placing that journal there, to warn Garrett that Karras knew he was coming, and to lead Garrett to the secret room with the cache of equipment. He's one of two Keepers in that mission.
Almost every mission has Easter eggs and secret stuff woven into it from dozens of sources. SOme are true Easter eggs and other are in-jokes, winks, nods tributes, homages, references, etc.

Easter eggs caused me to try to climb and scurry to every corner of a map... I remember one fan mission where I thought I had really done something great getting into a tower that looked like it was only for display. "Ha!" I thought, "I beat you!" Up inside the tower, tucked against the wall, was a scroll... it read, "nice try, keep looking!"
Aaaaaarggghhh!
I love that stuff. :D

Some subtle references to the events of the past games would also be nice, if not exactly "easter-eggish" in the usual sense. Like a nobleman keeping an old Servant's mask or a deactivated Security Eyebot in his basement. Or finding a pile of "The New Scripture of the Master Builder" next to a Hammerite forge, where they are using it to keep the fire going.

Oh, jeez, dancing zombies. Reminds me of in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, where if you wore one of three different masks in front of ReDeads, they'd start dancing. It's hilarious AND horrifying. They'd keep going even if you were killing them. *shudder*
Easter eggs are awesome. Definitely a must.

"Easter eggs" are fun. But they should be at the discretion of the DEVS and not a request from the players.
If there are none, so-be-it, if there are good. But lay off the "We must have easter eggs" It really is none of your busines whether there are or are not until you get the game and some player finds one, or the devs hint at or give you one.
And your list is short one. In the Merchants bank and trust, the vault will open by itself. It's on a time lock. You merely need to be IN GAME for about 18 to 24 hours for the lock to activate.

^Please forgive the idle (and very fun) speculation, then. An Easter egg put in simply to please the rabid fans is not really an Easter egg, true, but if no one ever bothered to speak up and say "I found it," would the devs keep putting them in? It's good to show that we appreciate the effort to add these gems in.
Like a nobleman keeping an old Servant's mask or a deactivated Security Eyebot in his basement.
I love it when these things are put in a position to really freak you out. You come around a corner and wind up face-to-face with a turret, only to realize after you've jumped back into the dark that it's only for display. A lot of fun, if not a true Easter egg.
I like the eggs that are either just plain silly (dancing zombies) or that give you extra backstory/info on some of the characters (the Truart graveyard).

Some very easy-to-make easter eggs would be that if there are areas slightly outside the map that the player isn't supposed to get to but still manages somehow, there could be signs saying stuff like: "Get outta' here, rogue! This is no place for you!*" or "Frob me 50 times for free loot!" :D
*For those who don't remember/haven't played TDP, this is the first thing that a guard says to you in the game.

Each of the sequels had references to the other games. I know in TDS there were references to Karras and his crazy Mechanist sect in some book/note in a couple of the levels. I was very pleased to know that they threw that in. It helps with the continuity of the story and to those who've played all the games, its nice to know that we know what it's referring to.

Totally agreed, its not an Easter Egg if you are aware its going to be in the game.;)

^^ Partially agree with you. But sometimes you gotta put in an Easter egg that has been suggested if only because its an inside joke for those who've been on the forums during the dev time. Like the now infamous crate o cookies.
All the games are LOADED with Easter Eggs, in-jokes, and all different references to people, movies, literature, plays, novels, music, and so many tributes/homages that literally about half of each game would not exist without them. It's meaningless to request "no Easter Eggs" as there is no obligation to the player, and most of the time, an Easter Egg in Thief isn't even noticed or recognized. To remove these things would be a fundamental mistake for Thief.

I've mentioned this before but in TDS I'm sure a guard quoted "All I'm askin' for, all I'm lookin' for is a little respect". But no-one has been able to confirm this.
I like the idea of Easter eggs, Hidden and Dangerous 2 had (again) dancing zombies, raining blood, and a huge "Q" written in the sky.
Flashart:
thug1: t1_idle111: "So I says, 'It's called respect, Flemming. R-E-S-P-E-C-T, don't know what it means to me. But if I have to clock you in the noggin six times to get it, then that's what I'll do.' And I did. And now, I got the respect I deserve."
You have to ask the right persons. :p

I know that it might sound corny and it is totally deviated from the main topic: the game.
However I missed in Thief 3 the developer quotes. They were present in Thief 1 and Thief 2:
http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/A_Keeper's_Training:_In-game_text
http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/Sabotage_at_Soulforge:_In-game_text (scrool way down)
Alltough it is merely a intangible trinket I do not see it less desireable.Togheter with the dialogues give the game that much needed touch of humour. In a way I consider it a Thief tradition.
What are your oppinions?
PS: for the reason of lazyness I did not search the forum to see if there is a similar topic. I will find out soon by the topic merging system.
It's an LGS tradition! I was glad that Jeremy "Faceless" Graves posted them on his own dev site long enough for us to make copies. This is the kind of thing I'm hoping EM will enjoy making and sharing. It wouldn't have to be an Easter Egg, but if they could include it in the gamefiles, that would be enough.
An alternative link to the quotes (Can't get enough links to historical documents!): http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1636659#post1636659
There's something odd about that quote list, though. There are a couple of quotes added in from Deus Ex! http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1636823#post1636823

Kabatta, a lot of Thief traditions were broken with TDS, lol.
As for this one, I didn't know these quotes existed. I'd prefer many of the other Thief traditions -- like the gameplay related ones -- be held up instead in lieu of this one :) But if easter eggs go in, I just hope they were very very hard to find...and highly improbably to find in regular gameplay... otherwise, it breaks the gameplay up.
This is a thread for this one thing. All the other traditions are being held up in other respective threads. This is something the EM devs would do to amuse themselves while working, when they aren't playing pool.
Most of the older titles' Easter Eggs were blended into the story and environment, but sometimes near impossible, or just too simple for the player to ever discover except by complete accident.
It doesn't break gameplay up when it's a game in itself that, at least, the veteran taffers relish and look for!

Easter Eggs are great. I think Thief 2 had the right sort of idea with the mission secrets. Like, the secret painting in the Docks which u had to shoot an arrow into and the way of using an arrow to hit an elevator button so it would come down.
I know DS lacked a lot in easter eggs but i liked when Garrett was on trial and Orland said that he had murdered before and mentioned Constantine and Karras.
Hopefully Thief 4 will get it right
...I know DS lacked a lot in easter eggs but i liked when Garrett was on trial and Orland said that he had murdered before and mentioned Constantine and Karras...
I doubt Orland would have preferred the alternative
It's not Easter Eggs to continue a story. It's the third part of a three-part story and of course the future should reflect and remember the past events. See, something's wrong if natural continuance is considered something else.
