Hiya van_HellSing! The store finally launched during the afternoon but from GDC Canada I had no way to log in here and post the news, so thanks for doing so! (there is also a French version (http://www.eidosmontreal.com/fr/boutique.html) of the site of course!)
A lot of people have been asking for this kind of thing so it's really nice to finally have items available. Of course we only have the two items for Thief 4, but that will change in time. The first order came from the U.K. so hats off to our friends across the pond!
I thought the logo where going to change before printing it on t-shirts. Now i can see that it was not a joke.[where is the sad emoticon]

LOL
A Thiaf shirt XD
It looks weird for me to make a store and sell stuff about a game not existing? Usually companies make the product first and then sell trinkets in relation to it.

Guess i will take that as a bad sign.

No f-ing way that I'm gonna buy Thiaf-shirts. I don't know if it will be a good game, I'll never be a fan of a future project, nooo way. Take that stupid 4 out, and maybe I'll consider. Make a good T4, and hell, I'm gonna buy the whole store.
Edit: I'm pretty sure, that Thief-gamers are not that stupid bunch of fanboys: make the game first, and no L33T. Understand?

The t-shirts are good. They'll hopefully bring out even better ones when the cover art and stuff is done.
Imagine what the Thief IV posters will be like :P
And they should do posters if they've done them for Deus Ex 3.

I've just spent over $40 shipping a black Thi4f shirt over to the UK...hooray!
I adore the Thi4f logo, especially because it's got so many nutters worked up about it.
Okay guys, IF you make your T-Shirts just 'THIEF'.....I will buy 2 of them.
However, Thi4f would be embarrasing to wear out in public....people would be 'hey, are you some kind of dyslexic thief?'

But they're not making Thief, they're making Thi4f.
Hey René, do you think they might license Thief 4 lockpicking kits? You know, to stay in theme and all...
Maybe! But that kind of thing would come much later. We know we want to do in-game related things for both Thief and Deus Ex (like Valve does with Aperture Coffee Mugs for example) so it's a good idea we can revisit.
I've just spent over $40 shipping a black Thi4f shirt over to the UK...hooray!
I mentioned this in the TTLG forums (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126666&page=2), but those are the numbers we're getting from our provider, InternetSecure. Not much we can do about shipping, sorry.

Hehe yeah. I love it! Actually, everyone here might want to check out the (currently) two page thread about the merchandise over at TTLG (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126666). There's a lot of good ideas people are posting there including some ideas for contests about people suggesting quotes (i.e. "Must be the wind!") and the winning ideas will become shirts available for purchase.

Anyone's t-shirt arrived yet? Delivery times from across the pond do vary an awful lot but I would've thought that very high postage charges would equal a reasonably fast shipping.

The Thief store? Thi4f T-shirts. I'm sorry if I'm not too excited about it, and I want to be perfectly honest here, I find it somewhat worrying that there's Thief merchandise being sold off so soon after the game's announced... I'd have hoped there was less worry about making quick profit and more on the actual game. And let's be perfectly honest, have you people STILL not realised that people DON'T like the Thi4f thing? Why are T-Shirts sold with it.
I don't want to be negative or anything, but Rene, since you're the EM community guy, here's what I'd personally like communicated. From what I understand you guys are a new studio, and you've decided to work on Thief 4 AND Deus Ex 3. I hope you realise exactly what you are doing here, and the magnitude of the projects you are working with. These aren't the sequels to generic shooter #17. These are games which for many people are the best games EVER, and which for many at least the pinnacles in their respective genres, yet to be dethroned. IF you pull this off and the games are similar in quality to the original, you'll have semented your reputation as developers, but you cannot begin to imagine the amount of hatred that will come if the games are messed up, especially because the fans of BOTH series experienced disappointment.
You can't be good developers. You have to be the BEST in the business!!! The least thing is getting rid of the damn Thi4f thing, rather than actually putting it onto T-Shirts!!!!!
In any case, sorry for the rant, but just had to say it.
I am sure EM people want to do something about that thi"4"f but it is not just their decision. They have to change their boss mind.

If they make a blackjack available in the store, it will have to be fake. A lot of states have made blackjacks/saps illegal. Plus I'm also reminded of EA shipping real brass knuckles in their Godfather 2 press packages not going pleasantly at all a few months ago.
While I'm not condoning the purchase of weapons, if you decide to purchase one make sure to check your native country and state's laws on sap clubs before you do. It can get you into a lot of trouble just owning one. I myself own one as well as a pair of sap gloves.

A non functional blackjack, like a non weighted model, or a plush version that won't cause severe cranial trauma when you bash someone over the head with it.

a nerf BJ would be acceptable, as would a reasonably stiff nerf bow that can't fire arrows as long as it looks the part when strapped across your back

This bothers me greatly. I'm sure I can't be the only one. Why would they print the shirts if they weren't planning to stick with the logo? That's not smart. Of course, that logo isn't smart in the first place.
None of that would bother me as much if it wasn't for the thought that while there could be easily people in marketing that have no idea what they are doing, and it'd be fine, somebody higher up would have to approve that logo. And that somebody would probably have control over development process as well, and that somebody is still going to be making decisions on how the game will shape up.
That is really, really troubling.

It will be like buying a "Blue Harvest" hat, which was the codename for "Return of the Jedi" when Lucasfilm was trying to keep media and film-set crashers away during filming, and to expose media leaks. A collector's item for geeks, and not the official title. Same with "Revenge of the Jedi" which was changed to "Return of the Jedi", but only after posters and T-shirts were printed.
If you could come up with a more recent example, and preferably from gaming, that might go a long way toward convincing me. I don't think that Lucas' marketing tactics in the 80's are the best way to explain what's going on with Thiaf.
VIKTORIA

As has already been explained by Rene, its a working title and there is no need to worry or seek explanation. The official website address clearly says "Thief 4", not Thiaf.

In the meantime, buy the t-shirt while stocks last. ;)

Haha, Thie4, as ugly as it is, actually makes more sense and sounds like "Thief 4" when you say it out loud. But let's not go with that name either.
As has already been explained by Rene, its a working title and there is no need to worry or seek explanation.
Lets say this is a temporary logo, it really will be changed. This is still an incredibly stupid one. Are people who came up with the logo and approved it going to be fired?* I highly doubt that they will. They will keep working and comping up with and approving ideas for the game. Therefore, I still have a reason to worry.
I have nothing against optimism for the game, but this kind of crap the developers need to be called early on, while the things they are coming up with can still be changed.
* Note: I don't think these people should be fired just for the logo. Competent people make mistakes. Most of their mistakes don't get far enough to be on display like this, however. And the fact that this particular mistake made it this far brings up at very least a doubt of competency. I don't know which was actually the cause, incompetence or a simple human error, but that's just the thing. I don't know, and I worry. This is an entirely rational thing to do.
Edit: But just for fun, as a weak attempt to improve on this, I give you THI四F.Hey, at least it looks more like an 'E' than '4' does.
VIKTORIA
06-12-2009, 09:22 AM
You are entitled to your opinion that the working title is a stupid one; is crap; a mistake that shouldn't be on display and somehow suggests incompetency etc. Some fans like the design, however, so each to their own really. Your question/suggestion as to whether or not certain people should be fired for the title is somewhat over-dramatic and discourteous though, in my opinion.
It is, of course, entirely up to you if you wish to worry about whether such a title suggests that the game itself will suffer. Neither I or anyone else can change your personal reasoning. I prefer to concentrate on the game itself and many fans here are putting effort into giving their suggestions for game content, rather than focusing on what is just a title. So, what can I say, but.... Join us! Join us now! :D
If you could come up with a more recent example, and preferably from gaming, that might go a long way toward convincing me. I don't think that Lucas' marketing tactics in the 80's are the best way to explain what's going on with Thiaf.
WHEN has nothing to do with it. The commercial tendency for this kind of thing is the point.
You've made it clear you don't like it one bit. Let it go, but don't perpetuate the myth that this is the official name. It's all over the boards now that the concept has got people worried about what this mindset means for the game itself. It's news that's getting older with every utterance of disgust. It has been noted by EM.
"TR2N" the movie was finally changed to "TRON 2". Yeah, it's another movie, but that has nothing to do with the marketing announcement teaser concept.
Anyway, make the best of it, or enough already:

it depends what state you're in... some states have different restrictions on different types of weapons. If you have ever been to Trueswords.com it will actually restrict certain states from buying certain items due to weapons restrictions in that state. We could have a replica of constantine's sword or TDS dagger, or even the blackjack from TDP/TMA or TDS, but some people wouldn't be allowed to purchase them in their state.
I gotta say, a plushie blackjack would make me laugh my ass off though, and I'd so go around bashing my friends with it.
There's also the problem of moving the merchandise from state to state when traveling or relocating.

I'm still very excited though. Hope it doesn't turn out to be a Deus Ex t-shirt by accident though. That would be terrible.

Don't let my dour yellow face confuse you, I'm really happy for - rejoice - my t-shirt arrived! At last! Its long journey, from placing the order on the 15th of May, it being dispatched by Eidos the same day (great service from Eidos there!), to it sitting in some depot for two weeks before making its way across the big big sea and into my hands and over my head so I can take pictures of myself looking retarded.
Now I just need to see a doctor about my jaundice...

Things I'd buy...
Thief T - will eventually
Thief hoodie
plushie blackjack/burrick/benny(it must spout a phrase or start singing the drunk song from the originals
thief knife/dagger
Thief cloak
Thief bow and arrows (at least 30/40 lb pull)
Speed potions (like the original bottles, and maybe even real red glass instead of plastic :D) that were actually energy shots (think Mana energy shots)

Garrett as the King, Viktoria as the Queen and so on. Perhaps the pawns could be tree beasts. Whatever!!! :D

True to my sneaky nature I've managed to get around shipping costs to the UK by sending my T-shirt to my American boyfriend's house. I think he's getting sick of me using him as an international shipping go between delivery boy ::grin::
And to hell with everyone whining about it, I may not think the Thief 4 logo is "omg amazing!!!11oneone!eleven!" but it's not so truly awful that it's going to herald in the end of life as we know it. But then there's always going to be people who over react over stuff like this <.<

Haha, with a name like that alone how could I not? ;)
I am by no means a carpenter, I'm just very good with my crafts. A wooden board would not be beyond me, but the figurines would probably be some sort of clay and non painted unless I can talk my father in to getting on board...the last thing I made like that was supposed to be for display purposes only, but I'm told that so far my little people have held together due to great care when handling which makes me happy :)
If it's something I can work out and make stay together, I'll let you know :)
As for copyright issues, I'm not sure, possibly if I was selling it commercially...as a gift however and a donation for materials I don't think the same thing would apply...we are after all a forum of thief lovers ;)

I've been told that the post I added in the thread here (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=88814&page=2) thread might be better placed in this one, so I thought I'd do a quick copy/paste:
A light gem idea that I've been toying with for a while is an actual, real "gem" with an LED inside that can plug into your USB port and gets brighter/dimmer when you play Thief 4. I can picture it being part of a "Collector's Edition" version of the game, or offered when you pre-order.
You would still need the light gem on-screen, as the limitations would be that if you were playing Thief 4 in a well-lit room you wouldn't be able to see if your little doodad was lit up or not, but it would probably be a fun little gadget nonetheless.
Also, it might encourage people to play Thief in a dark room with the curtains closed, which, let's face it, is the way to get the most from the game (except Shalebridge Cradle. For that you need lights on and someone else - preferably your mummy - in the room to hold your hand :))
What do people think? Sometimes my own genius astounds even a genius such as myself :)
Something like this, but perhaps it could come with a separate cord so it can be placed where the user wants it.

Yeah, that would be great.
I'm thinking something about the size of half a tennis ball, quite flat (maybe rectangular) and filled with LEDs. It's on a cord, so you can put it right in front of your keyboard and when you're in the open it bathes you in greeny-yellow light.
*sigh* that would be awesome-o.

Ooh, I really like that idea :) It's funny, I always play Thief in broad daylight, but by the time I get to the really scary and hard levels it's always pitch black and I find myself on the edge of my seat and slightly scared of my own shadow :p
I actually had to pause the game, get up and turn a light on when I reached the Cradle...ain't no WAY I am ever playing that one in the dark...although a little light gem might make it less scary...even if it would deepen the shadows around me desk and make the walls of the room seem to become intangible and the slightest real noise after that becomes the reason for why you end up under the desk for the next few hours wielding your gaming mouse like a projectile weapon if need be....or is that just me? ;)

No, it's the same with me too :)
I remember being at university when I finally got my hands on T1 (I'd played T2 and loved it, and getting T1 was on my to do list). The curtains were rubbish in my halls of residence, so I'd set up all kinds of contraptions involving towels, pegs and sticks to block out the light so I could play Thief properly.
And then when it got scary I'd regret all the effort I'd gone to to make it dark ;)

Almost all of the clothing we wear in the West are made by impoverished and woefully underpaid people in the developing world. That's how we can pop into our local Asda (I guess it would be Walmart in the US) and pick up a t-shirt for £1.50 ($3). The Guardian ran a really interesting article (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/aug/13/ethical-supermarket-clothes) on it.
Unfortunately, despite the increase in Fairtrade and suchlike in food products, the clothing industry is very slow to catch up.

You can try to find a few other people here that live close to you and order together. Orders over $100 don't get charged for shipping. You just have to pick it up or pay for shipping from whoever ordered them to you.
I'm alone, here, I'm afraid. That's one reasons I'm on the forums a lot--no one else to share my love of the games. :)
Sorry about the shipping costs, everyone. We're already using one of the less expensive options, though it is quite slow when going overseas. I think things get caught up in various Customs offices. We're still exploring other shipping options so I'll keep you posted.

yeah it means that in the UK I'd be looking at roughly £25.50 for a T shirt with a logo I don't even like

The cost for shipping from Canada to Europe was around $24. I mailed one shirt in a padded envelope from the US to Netherlands and paid $9. I know that there are always costs for handling as well, and there could be some differences in costs between the US and Canada but $13 is a bit high. This will keep a lot of fans located overseas from buying shirts.
But... the shirts are nice and great quality!! :-)

Gotta say, I would love the shirt... but 30 bucks for one I can't justify ($13 for shipping) - especially since I'm tighter on cash than usual atm. I wouldn't care if I got it in a tan envelope as long as I could get that shipping down. Maybe you could budget ship a single shirt in a tan envelope? That would be amazing, and you'd make all us taffers and other people happy.

Unpinned this thread for now. I'll stick it again when new Thief merchandise is introduced. :)
If the art department shows us a vista of our dream City, with all the right colors and elements, and there's a hidden taffer/crouching Garrett beneath a smokestack, bow and water arrow at the ready--I'd like to see it cover the whole front of a T-shirt. Even better, if the T-shirt had a 360° panoramic view wrapped around the whole shirt, with smoggy night sky at the neck and shoulders, dark alleyways at the waist, and the Thieves' Highway and a Master taffer at heart-level. (And arguing archers off in the distance.. heh heh...)
A smallish stamp in the middle of the chest seems too cheap and homemade-looking, even if the print is durable, and the shirt is quality (I'm thankful the shirts are well-made). It's the EM logo at the upper-back and on the sleeve that make it less homemade- and more official-looking.

Just to get back on topic, I wore my thi4f t-shirt the other day and someone at work recognised the name thief, he said he played the very first game and loved it, but never got to play the second (let alone third) game. So we got talking about thief 4 and he said he might just give the series another go if he found the time for it, which he said he probably didn't have since he's got a wife and three children to take care of.
So take that EM, I'm advertising for you and I'm actually paying you for it. :flowers:
