View Full Version : BURRICKS - The Appreciation Thread

I want to see Burricks again. I did not really like the 3rd level of the original series, where you fought them almost exclusively in tight underground spaces, but I liked them in general. (I hated them at first, but there is a level later where they burrow into some dude's treasure vault. I started to really love them then.)

They remind me of a twist from the semi-classic "using a sand worm's tunnel" idea.

I would most love to actually see Burricks at some point, similar to the level where they burrow into a person's home. Or perhaps they could be kept as pets. I wouldn't want a whole level of them, and I would want it easier to knock them out (their "kill zone" in Thief 1 was very hard to hit with arrow, and you had to get dangerously close to them very quickly to knock them out which was near impossible in the long tight tunnels without being seen)

I liked in Thief 2 how there was a head of one mounted on a wall. That was at least a nod towards their existence even if they did not appear.

In T3, wasn't there an epitaph under the hammerite fort mentioning them? It was like, 'Ramirez, much loved by his burricks'

I'm glad to see people are in general support.

I do recall that mentioning in T3, but that was all we got really. (I want to say somebody used Burrick as an insult to somebody else as well)

I think they were by far my most favorite non-humans. I wouldn't go as far as to say they were "adorable" but they had a bit of personality (more than I can really say for the trees or rat men). I guess some people like them... as pets.

Yes.

Just makes sure they are used the same way they are in the actual Thief games, as a dangerous subterranean animal.

Some of the mods have these ideas of domesticated burricks and the notion of domesticating an animal that breath's poison gas is kind of ridiculous.

True, well,Ramirez did domesticate them, but in a metal enforced underground enclosure.Burricks gas is definately flamable,so that could mean a burrick noticing Garret near an open flame could result in pure awesomeness.(or Garret shooting a flame arrow through a burricks gas attack,if the burrick is attacking something/someone)

Burricks are adorable, and I use that word without any hesitation. They are very similar to dogs in many ways, even the appreciation! For example some people think of dogs as being very messy, very boisterous, very hairy... while other people absolutely love and adore dogs! I am one of these people :)

The Burricks looked very good as well, however I only recently realised that my usual perception of them has been wrong ever since I saw the original concept art of a Burrick. The concept art clearly shows them being orange skinned with wet greasy hair draped around them, while I always thought the 'greasy hair' was more like scales or something (like some sort of dinosaur).

The Burricks similarity to dogs is really what endears them to me - the sounds they make as a prime example (huffing and panting when fleeing, and even howling when finding another dead/unconscious burrick!)

My problem with the Burrick as an enemy is the problem I have with most of the enemies I don't like, there's no stealthy way to dispatch them.

Making their breath flammable could add some really interesting gameplay elements to them. Like tossing a flare in it's mouth causes it to go up like a Dodongo. That's still not stealth, but at least it's awesome.

.

Thats actually not true. They have a place just at the base of the neck that will kill them by broadhead arrow with 1 hit, and they can be knocked out by black jack if you hit them on the top of the head without them seeing you. (this of course is very difficult since you can't stand behind them, and they see you if you're in front of them)

I usually got them either by arrow, or by luring them down a corridor by a sound, then jumping at them from the side. In the second where they rear back in surprise, they can still be knocked out. (I usually had to save and try it a few times before it would work)

I love burricks, for two reasons. 1- they were the only animals in game.
2- They were the only AIs who seemed to feel pity when they saw their dead buddies. Other AIs had cynical reactions, some were frightened, or incredulous and angry. But only burricks weep with grief. From the very first time I saw them they moved me. For that reason I try to never kill a burrick, I always blackjack them. (of course, yes, you can :D)

You can absolutely knockout burricks. I have accomplished it in many FMs, OMs and tested it in the editor itself.

They knockout very easily, actually. If they turned around on you, then likely they were already at a higher alert stage. It's happened to me with guards before.

No.... No "bosses." The whole point of being a thief is to AVOID huge battles. :(

Also, Burricks seem to have more of a "pack" mentality, like wolves. They even howl when they find another dead Burrick. There could be alpha BUrricks or such though. Just no "queens."

EDIT: I should have read your post more carefully. -_- Thought you were being serious, lol.

Burricks are my favorite creatures in the Theif series and yes there is an epitaph to Ramiez and his Burricks in the catacomb's under Fort Ironwood in the Old Quarter.

The first time I encountered them my reaction was "What the .... is that" only to get wiped out and have to restart the level because I had forgotten to save Lol. After that I found out that they are the easiest creature in any of the games to outsmart if they are chasing you.

Bring back the Burricks. If you don't I'll get a petition up and come and stand outside your offices chanting "Burrick's, Burrick's, Burrick's" until you do. :)

The footsteps of burricks were always very 'clickity-clacking', if you get what I mean, which I thought was a weird choice to make. I do like the sound though and now that I'm used to it, no other would make sense. Do they have hooves? Maybe Garret should ride one...

Platinumoxicity
05-04-2010, 12:56 PM
It's weird, the footstep sounds for Burricks and Craymen seem to be switched. The craymen should walk with that hich-pitched sound that burricks make, because of their hard exoskeleton, and the burricks' fat little feet should make that sloshy sound you hear when a crayman is walking.

jtr7
05-04-2010, 03:26 PM
Burricks have large inflexible toe claws clacking on stone like a dogs uncut nails clicking on hard surfaces, and don't walk on their heels. Lobsters' and crabs' exoskeletons are pretty flexible, but I agree the squish shouldn't be so pronounced unless they are supposedly coming right from the water.

http://www.thief-thecircle.com/media/concepts/t1-sketch-burrick.jpg

It may or may not have been proposed that burricks use the claws while digging, to cut stone itself, or kick back crumbled stone and dirt, and/or give them purchase on stony inclines.

Oh man they absolutely HAVE to make a level out of this. They could call it a "Day at the Races" where Garrett is out to loot a casino or other gambling venue, and he could place a bet and sabotage a Burrick race to his favor and win tons of money :D

Think of the possibilities, EM!!!

Why sabotage the race when that would mean having to go collect your winnings, not to mention place your bet, and expose yourself to the people you're stealing from?

If a burricks breath is flammable (as inferred from the briefing of Framed in TMA), how is it that such a sizeable number of burricks could survive for very long in the ruins of Karath Din (as seen in TDP The Lost City), which it is fair to say is packed with lava, fire elementals and air so hot and dry a party of keepers all but died of thirst?

I don't believe their breath is flammable. I believe Garrett quipped about their gaseous breath the way we quip about explosive farts. Gas so bad..."Don't light a match!" The breath does not react with any of the torches near them in the Bonehoard, nor do fire arrows set it off.

Apparently burrick meat is edible, but if spider meat tasted like the best beef evar, then who knows?

Yeah, Burricks were great for the game. Most of the time those broadhead arrows were less than worthless...I'd only carry 1 with me on any mission, and some missions none. I'd carry all the water arrows I could afford, then a couple of moss arrows...fill in the rest with a noisemaker and fire arrow. I almost never got a chance to use the fire or broadhead arrows.

But, levels with Burricks was fun because we got to shoot the broadheads.

That's like saying if EM makes T4 anything like T1, we can all but forget about vine arrows and female guards.

T1 and T2 are virtually from the same mold. If EM makes T4 anything like T2, it will also be like T1... and if they make it anything like T1, it will also be like T2. I'm not sure I understand why you draw the line so black and white between the two?

Sorry to go against the current again, But I didn't like burricks. (nor zombies, nor cobrabeasts)
They acted like mindless monsters, not living beings. And zombies, well, I find that a weak thing in any game, any story. I believe Thief can have much stronger antagonists, both storywise and in-game.

I can think of a few more realistic alternatives:
How about flesh eating plants in locations associated with the order of the vine.?
How about darkvision golems patrolling richer streets, crypts?
How about gangs taking over certain areas now that there are no keepers, and Garett refuses to keep? Being caused by power struggles up high, requiring more guards there, and less city guards? Some gangs could have wizards running the show.
How about diseased animals? even rotting corpses in the streets might need to be avoided or cleansed. This would fit in even more with a concept of "Everything went to hell after the keepers left"
I guess if Burricks could be made more animal like, I would be OK with them, but as they appeared so far, I'd rather be rid of them.

AlexOfSpades

Well the Burricks were always hostile, which wasnt good on the "biological" side, but in the gameplay side i must admit that it was necessary.

Imagine having monsters in a mission, where they dont attack you on sight. You dont actually have to creep or anything, since the burricks are just.. minding.. their own business. Dont you think it would be boring?

Anyways i like your ideas. Flesh eating plantsies!

But what do you mean with Darkvision golems?

That's like saying if EM makes T4 anything like T1, we can all but forget about vine arrows and female guards.

T1 and T2 are virtually from the same mold. If EM makes T4 anything like T2, it will also be like T1... and if they make it anything like T1, it will also be like T2. I'm not sure I understand why you draw the line so black and white between the two?

You are much naive if you think T1/G and T2 are very similar. Sure they both are about 'thieving' gameplay but the design approach, mission structure, preference of levels over story and total removal of supernatural aspect makes T2 a VERY different gameplay experience from that of T1. I don't mind INCLUSION of new things such as female guards and vine arrows and stuff, but EXCLUSION of certain key elements from T1 is what I object upon. So if EM decides to go T2 way, it doesn't AUTOMATICALLY mean it will have T1 elements. Hope its clear to you now..

I admit to killing them, though I was always guilt ridden due to the death call.

I would not kill them now if I met them again, assuming I wasn't cornered (though jumping over them and using their hump as a spring board would be pretty epic).

I remember the first time I killed a burrick. When I heard the "trying-to-run-away-sound" I felt so bad that I decided to never kill a burrick again. I always sneak past them now :p

I really hope T4 will have burricks.

Burricks where cool because their existence explained how new tunnels could be formed thus opening up new areas of adventure. For example, it seemed to me that the back-story for 'Down in the Bonehoard' was the Horn of Quintus had summoned them to the area. As a result new tunnels had been formed, which opened up long lost tombs that had not yet been plundered. In this way Burricks functioned like a storytelling device which gave the setting greater authenticity, merging gameplay and the storyline. Better still they are fairly original creatures. Too often the monsters in a medieval setting are just ripped straight out of the D&D Monsters Manual.

<yes I know I'm over thinking this but this is what I liked about them>

I don't agree that every enemy calls for stealth. Animals, mindless undead and automatons don't always need to be crept past because they aren't smart, they usually are incapable of raising alarms etc. and are more or less territorial, that is, they only care about their patrol. Humans in contrast are guarding something and if they see you they should pursue you until you are dead.

The scariest situations involving Burricks were being stuck on a rope and hearing one belch its' gasses in your direction. Knowing that there is a wall of choking death advancing on your position while slowly climbing a wall really gets the pulse rate up.

Exactly. They were AIs in Dark Project and there were many of them, and one could find their heads mounted as trophies on some nobles' walls. They were nearly exterminated in Metal Age (there were no burrick AIs), but there were still trophy heads on nobles' walls, mentions of them in passing, and one character had a phobia about them (which came into play as an excuse for the devs to make it a little bit harder for the player to deal with the person). And in TDS, a character from TDP has a mention of them on his gravestone in the cemetery, and one of the things you may hear a guard mutter about is eating a burrick burger.

Reptiles are usually bald because their bodies don't produce heat that could be stored by insulation provided by fur, and because they don't want to store too much heat when in hot environments. But burricks do have fur. So they're not exactly reptiles in the way we understand reptiles to be in our world. They're not necessarily ectothermic like lizards on Earth.

What I liked best about burricks was that they demonstrated some non-human, non-evil, non-magical threats in the world. They were just simple animals that happened to get in the way. I vote yes for burricks, but also for running into other animals that make this world unique. I don't think we have to see every insect and bird in the woods, but I wouldn't be opposed to including at least critters that can affect game play.

Extending our view of new factions, the depths of the magical world, and the natural world, and the supernatural world are great. Do you remember what it felt like to hear something new and inhuman for the first time as you played Thief? You kind of stop and think, "what do I do with THAT?" People are predictable and less scary, even with better AI, but animals and undead change the rules on you. I would like to learn more about the spirits and creatures of the Trickster's world, not just the Pagans. I would like to see the necrotic element be developed in plot, not just as a game play device... give it history, give it destiny, and make it as fascinating as it is dangerous!

I've actually had a thought about plot along those lines, but would rather develop it a bit rather than just barf a vague opinion on the community.

Our first round of new creatures, showing at E³, will be zombies who don't act just like guards for a change, fire elementals, and the noxious reptilian race of "burricks." What I mean by "noxious" in this case would take a little explanation. Basically at some point it's going to involve someone doing a lot of burping into a microphone. -Tim

Model name (DromEd/T3Ed)burrick, burdead1, burdead2

Burricks are huge, bipedal lizards, with a form vaguely resembling a cross between a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Carboniferous amphibian, but with the head of an iguana, fit to scale, and without any crest or dewlap. They have hair like a horse's mane, but it lays flat, and appears matted and oily. They are loathed for their destructive burrowing and injurious belchings. They are popularly hunted and shot at, and some nobles' homes have mounted Burrick-head trophies. They can be lulled into complacency by the soothing musical tones, such as that of the magical Horn of Quintus.

Habits:

Burricks are burrowing animals, and can create labyrinthine tunnel systems much like ants, yet even boring straight through solid rock. Because no known material is impregnable to them, they frequently cause serious structural damage to nearby buildings and walls.[2] Their tunnel systems consist of a series of perfectly straight octagonal tunnels, merged at the ends, sometimes opening into a natural cave or huge conical Burrick den. It is unclear where waste rock and other material is stored; a few pieces of rubble by the first tunnel in the Bonehoard is the only vestige of this.

Diet:

It is not known exactly what Burricks eat. They are not scavengers, as they apparently have difficulty digesting carrion, but are known to eat live animals. In their extensive excavations, it's not out of the question that they consume whatever lives in the soil they clear away, possibly spiders or glowing mushrooms. Whatever it is Burricks consume they are able to produce from it a unique substance, which they use as their primary defense: a plume of visible, horizontally spreading, noxious green gas which they can belch forth up to a distance yet unmeasured.

Society:

Burricks almost always travel in small packs, usually in groups of about a half dozen, but if undisturbed by humans, they can form colonies numbering in the dozens, such as in the Bonehoard. They appear also to be somewhat emotional creatures similar to dogs, whimpering when injured, and howling mournfully upon finding a fellow burrick dead. Burricks have an advanced system of maintenance and housecleaning, evident by the stability and tidiness of their tunnels and living spaces. Four burricks have been found dead in one chamber of the Bonehoard in various stages of decay, which may be an indication of either quarantine or a primitive tomb. To an extent, they can also be tamed and kept as pets by those with adequate facilities, such as Ramirez.

In T1/TG they are inhabitants the player must avoid or confront. We see and hear about the damage they can cause, they are experimented on,[4] and are even kept as pets.

In T2 they are joked about, have become a euphemism, are used as an insult, are feared, and there are several mentions of violence against them. We only ever see mounted trophy heads and an image of a burrick's head painted on a sign hanging outside Crippled Burrick Pub.

In T3 the word "Burrick" has become a euphemistic curse word, burrick meat is consumed, they are still joked about, the Sentient called "The Heart" is also called "The Burrick's Heart Ruby", but we never see a burrick in any form at all.

Strategy:

A Burrick is much more horrific in appearance than it is as an opponent. Its patroling speed and visual acuity are high and it is a bit difficult to stalk and backstab one. Still it should be fairly easy for most players to circle around the beast and attack it repeatedly with the sword or blackjack from different directions, giving it no chance to use its breath attack. The problem arises when the Burricks come in groups as dodging a great deal of gas clouds at the same time, can be a toilsome experience. As an additional hindrance, the "burpfx" effect is so complex that the game's framerate drops dramatically with each additional belch on screen.

■Broadhead Arrow – can kill Burricks from a distance with ease
■Backstab – kills a Burrick with a single swing
■Fire Arrows or Mines – very effective against these large beasts
■Sword – even discovered, circle around the beast and kill it with fast slashes
■Gas Arrows – extremely effective on clustered Burricks
■Blackjack- difficult to approach, but almost as effective as sword in open combat (Warning: blackjacking a burrick will alert nearby entities)

Appearances:

Thief: The Dark Project/Thief GoldEdit
■Down in the Bonehoard
■Assassins
■The Haunted Cathedral
■The Lost City

Trivia:

A repeated in-game notion is that the noxious fumes from a Burrick are reputed to be flammable, but that's not an implemented gameplay feature, what with all the open flames and explosive weapons around. Still, Garrett quips about "looking down a Burrick's mouth with a lit match" in the briefing for Framed.

[Adorable] stinking creatures. :D

That's better. :naughty:

"burrick burger" the guard says in TDS. This means their flesh is good, despite of the stink. This recalls me the pigs, very stinking and dirty animals, but with a unique tasty flesh (the famous salami here are made with pig). I remember the summer of two years ago, I was working in a mountain barn, I had to clean a piggery: the first time I couldn't even breath as the stink was strong. I have to admit that maybe it was just the piggery that was dirty, but they seemed not to mind it. The pig is the burrick in real life: I've read of someone who felt into their sewages and eventually died of stink.

One more thing: Garrett once said "lit a match" referring to the burrick's gas; this could associated to pigs too: a system to use their sewages as resource to get flammable gas by their fermentation has been invented, and it's widely used within the pig farms. Methane producing electricity through water boilers.

Pigs are much cleaner and even smarter than dogs. :p
Your experience seems to be the pig farm. This is a man-made environment - so every factory farm "stinks".. be it pigs or poultry etc.

Naturally, animals don't like to live in their excrement - but in any factory farm, they have no choice. Humans choose to keep pigs in tiny, tiny pens which is very cruel for such a smart animal. Truth be told, they probably smell better than humans would smell, if humans were kept in cages of the equivalent size and forced to live with their waste products.

Yeah, you're perfectly right. But what about the rolling on the mud, thing very appreciated by wild pigs too?

Other animals roll in the mud too; for different reasons/benefits and its quite common.
Heck, even us humans participate in a mud bath to benefit our skin. :D

Afaik, pigs do so because it helps them to cool down and the mud also helps to protect them from sunburn and bugs.

I share your love of the pig :D but had to add that the cleanliness of a dog kind of depends on its breed and personality. Some are remarkably clean.

Anyways, Burricks are awesome! I really hope they bring them back in all their snorting, braying glory. Lore-wise, it might be cool to explore temple ruins of a Mesoamerican-themed ancient burrick cult (maybe they were enormous in prehistoric times ). Incidentally, Lost City kind of featured these two themes (ruins and burricks), but didn't really tie them together. Perhaps have it so the pagans are attempting to revive the practice?

I share your love of the pig :D ...

I have affection for all sentient beings and, truth be told, factory farms disgust me. :thud:

Its one of those things that let down the human race imo; we're capable of much, MUCH better.

id like to see a mission at the racetrack but instead of horses and greyhounds its burricks, lol.
plenty of money around the track. u could make millions just pick pocketing the punters, no need to break into the betting area money rooms.

burricks with those ratmen from constantines mansion as jockeys.

Burricks, Craymen, Ape/Ratmen, spiders... Perhaps the Baron has a small menagerie in a part of the city.

But oh no... The burricks ate through their cages... and released all the other beasts into the city.

And thus, we have a reason for all the spiders.

*shivers*

Thief spiders scared the hell out of me, almost as much as the Annelid Arachnids from System Shock.

Please include them.

And the gentle "tic.... tic.... tic...." that their legs made.

I hope it's safe to assume they will take creative liberty with any creature in the world that is not humanoid. Deadly Shadows didn't do much outside of the occasional cat, which was a shame because there was so much more depth in having more fantastical creatures. If not burricks, maybe they will have something else.
