I would love to have some official Thief merchandise like:
- Soundtrack CD
- Art book
- Making Of DVD
- Books
- Clothing
now what about some of these items included in a Trapezoidal Collector's Edition Box? ;)

Yes please, to all. :thumb:
It would be fantastic to see the release of a special Collectors' Edition too.
As for ideas of the box content. Graphic novel perhaps, a figure/model of main protagonist, art cards etc?
Oh, and a city map would be awesome. :)

and editor for thief 4 and source code for the dark engine! ;)
and i 2nd the call for a poster... i'd take one of a map of the city or of some type of thief concept art.
or they could do a fan contest for art to be turned into a poster for a collector's edition :)

The only thing I would want would be a cloth map of the City, that would have to be made in collaboration with all the old LGS people in order to really be cannon.
There was a city map project over at TTLG forums for ages.

Lockpick replicas
No, no. Real, useable promo lockpicks. Make a deal with Southord (http://southord.com/), theirs are excellent.
But a Thief bow & crystal arrows replica would possibly be doable without invoking weapons legislation.
Other stuff (I agree with the rest of the suggestions so far):
Thief comic book(s). Like Assassin's Creed, only a lot better. Remember Dave Gibbons' Beneath A Steel Sky comic?
Mundane promo merch like lunchboxes, keychains, pens etc. aren't very exciting to me overall, but I'm sure they're nice to have.
Oh, and so is a full-length live action motion picture directed by Uwe Böll.

A bow might be much. Thiefsie arrowheads might be cool though. Randomly include a water, fire, gas, or noisemaker arrowhead replica?

are you mad?! :lmao:
I don't see how a movie would translate well...I mean, most of the movie would be Garrett waiting in the shadows for the perfect time to sprint to the....next shadow. Lol!
I am not sure of many things in life, but I am safe when I say a Thief movie won't be in the works.

Elemental arrowhead replicas would be great collector's edition items.
Also, a plastic/resin replica of Garrett's mechanical eye. Better yet, a teeny tiny (read: cheap) usbdrive of 512MB/1GB storage inside the mechanical eye. That way you'd have an excuse for dragging it around with you and showing it off to friends.
Printed cloth map of the city would also be great. Maybe a couple different maps of various places. Something similar to the map of Norrath in the EQ2 Collector's edition.
Drawing further on the EQ2 collector's edition, some coins would be cool as well, especially if found in a tiny cloth pouch.
EDIT: Supercheap (so as not to bump up the price of the collector's edition much) miniwebcams inside a replica of Garrett's mechanical eye. Hm? Hm? How awesome would that be? Working mechanical eye, yeeeeeah. :p

(or / or) City map, book of collected wise sayings of keepers / hammers / pagans also from the first three games, an Eye, a hammer, a mechanical eye, lockpicks, the first three games upgraded to new engine, a cloak with hood, a potion bottle, talismans of elements.

- a HP potion (with powerdrink inside).
- a real water-arrowhead on a chain (as a necklace).
- replica of the main relic that needs to be found.
- a DVD containing a few of the fan-fave maps (could be a vote on the forum) in the new engine.
I know I'd like to play "life of the party" in a brandnew coat :)

A cape :hmm: Seriously, Thief is one of the best series ever. I would gladly pay a large sum for a kickass collectors edition.
You guys have some awesome ideas. Personally the only thoughts I had some replica item/loot from the game, a soundtrack, and books of the factions, like Hammerite sermons and stuff like that. OF COURSE I would fully expect a cloth map, but that hasn't been done in like...forever?
This is 2000's though, so I'd expect nothing more than a crummy little folded up paper poster, some lame unlockable content, and a dvd with insights on the game's development. Sigh. Collectors editions suck now.

I would like to see a re-release of the original games, including Thief Gold, and a collector's set with all five games in trapezoidal boxes - even TDS though it never had one before. If possible, the re-releases should be modified for compatibility with the current OS when they are released.
Corvin25

Perhaps a limited edition lamp/nightlight.... of ARROWS. :) Made of either glass or fiberglass or translucent colored plastic, whatever. They should look like the "crystals" tied onto the shafts of Garrett's arrows.
A glowing orange fire arrow, green moss arrow, blue water arrow, yellow gas arrow. Or maybe a round plastic "flash bomb" light, which can be set to pure white light, or strobe. ;)
The game is all about lighting, is it not?
...... Oh god. I just got the best idea ever.
KEEPER GLYPH LAMPS. A "book" with lightbulbs inside, with a colored translucent area containing scratched out "glyphs." Naturally the lamp would have a dark orange/rust/yellow sort of light cmonig from the glyphs. Maybe the "cover" of the book could be swapped out with different glyph sheets, like a Lite Brite. A red-glowing hammer glyph, A green-glowing pagan glyph, and a blue-glowing keeper glyph. And on the spine of the book would be the "THIEF" title in white.
Sometimes ideas just pour out of me. O_o
And lastly: Jewellery. You already mentioned "water arrow" pendants. But if you guys made a Hammerite Rosary, or sterling silver hammer pendant, I'd buy it in a second. I've always enjoyed the Hammers, and they're easily my favorite faction.
.... Please don't kill me, Viktoria... D:

Collector's Edition:
If this was in a box, I'd buy it:
- Soundtrack CD
- Art book
- Books
- Clothing/ T-shirt
-Signed, limited edition lithograph of a scene or cityscape, like what was done for Half-Life 2.
-Jewelry: After reading about it, a Hammer rosary was suggested. I like this because, unlike an arrowhead replica, this would actually be more game-specific in that it would (theoretically) be something found on a character, whereas arrowheads of different colors can currently be bought online for just about any reason :).
In short: The more swag available in a collector's box --and game-specific detail/attention paid to that swag to make it 'right'-- the more in-demand it will be :).

A list of possibilities... lets see what I'd be willing to dole out for:
ABSOLUTELY at any price these should be included in a collectors edition:
Level editor/creator
Map of the city on cloth (Ala Neverwinter Nights collectors edition)
Sound track CD/DVD
Art book
I'd be willing to pay $10 more if it included one of the following:
A DVD with all the cutscenes (please make them the artistic ones from T1 and T2, no final fantasy style stuff)
A Burrick plushie (so cute... yet gassy...)
A hammerite rosary
A T-shirt with the classic image of the hammer with the red glazing background, or the keeper keyhole with the light shining out of it, or one of Garret's hood with only the shine of his mechanical eye peering out of the blackness of the T-shirt
I'd be willing to pay $20 more for one of the following + something from above
The classic purple velvet purse with some fake metal gold coins in it
Garrett's mechanical eye
Necklace with an elemental arrowhead on it
Builder's Hammer
A full sized elemental arrow with plaque to display it on
I personally feel a cape would be too out there... although a hood could be cool?
Maybe a fake tattoo of garret's keeper scar that he had at the end of the 3rd game XD
DoomyDoomyDoomDoom
05-16-2009, 04:14 AM
Hood/cape/cloak whatever. I mentioned a cape in jest though.
Point is, it would be cool if they included some sort of tool of Garretts trade in the spirit of thiefsie. Article of clothing, weapon, lockpicks, rope arrow, whatever (heh just imagined somebody trying to climb a rope arrow, down you go). I'd imagine people would be strongly opposed to any of his more 'physical' tools being included though. Act now and you'll receive a blackjack! Tired of your whiny kid or significant other? Blackjack em! and disappear into ze night with your sneaksie cloak you taffer you.
Anyway, I would love that talking plush Garrett:D That got me thinking about a talking figure of old Benny. Oh the hilarity.

I love all the merchandise ideas, particularly the more unusual ones. :)
A Hood...probably the easiest and coolest piece of clothing they could do as part of a collectors box.
A Cloak...but kind of big and too expensive to be feasible.
A black 'Thief' t-shirt...not 'Thi4f'. I don't mind Thi4f as a game title, but I won't wear it as a shirt.
Or a black t-shirt with Garrett's line that says 'All that you have, I can make mine!'

This is a really good idea for a thread. I've often held the view that one of the best ways of combatting piracy is to add value to the purchased product.
When I bought Morrowind, I got a map, a great-looking fold-out box and a decent manual.
I like smart packaging, books and maps, personally. Never been one for figurines or general clutter. So I'd definitely vote for:
...A 200-page novella (by China Mieville or someone Steampunky), perhaps in the form of Garret's journal and filling in some backstory to the plot...
...An art book, containing concept art and other sketches
...A map poster
Personally I find figurines etc. a bit naff, but maybe that's just me.

Garrett's journal of the original games would actually be pretty sick. Stick in images of the old maps and sketch art and you've got a pretty neat source book for the old games.

I'd like to see the developer's take a cue from Starbreeze's treatment of the Chronicles of Rid****: Escape From Butcher Bay. First, they expanded the original game for the PC version to include a director's commentary and a bonus level. Then, the entire game was given a face-lift for current-gen consoles.
So, for Thief 4, a developer's commentary would be my #1 request for a collector's edition. Also, the first 2 games are EXTREMELY worth updating for current consoles like EFBB was done, and would make fine additions to a collector's addition.

My ideal Collector's Edition:
An in-universe box. Like a wood box with the Keeper symbol burned into it.
Soundtrack CD. Some of the best music I've ever heard in a game came from the Thief series. If it's still up to snuff, a soundtrack CD would be awesome.
A cloth map of the City.
A Thief Art Book, maybe with a little retrospective section looking back on the history of the Thief games.
Something I don't want - any kind of mechanical gadget or action figure. THESE NEVER WORK.
I bought the Fallout 3 survival edition, and the PipBoy clock broke after a week.
I bought the BioShock Collector's Edition, and the Big Daddy figurine was broken.
I bought the Assassin's Creed Collector's Edition, and the Altair figurine was broken.
FORGET THAT. I would love a mechanist trinket in my box, but not a piece of crap that costs 20 extra bucks that breaks during shipment. It dilutes the experience.

Actually this seems like a very good little guideline to making a Collector's edition of anything.
The World of Warcraft Collector's Editions contain art books, soundtrack CDs, maps (in the form of mousepads), as well as a "making of" dvd.
I'd buy the Collector's Edition of Thief 4 for those.
Wouldn't bother with collectible card games though.
Although a deck of ordinary playing cards might be fun.

Childen of Karras small replicas, made out of bronze like the original, with the same moves (minus deadly projectiles) and same lines.
Garrett costume in shades of dark green (not black) with hooded cloak
life size nerf BJ
life size non functional nerf short bow as long as it's a good model and not an obvious toy and stiff enough to be worn with the costume
model Garretts eye with a deluxe version containing a camera with wifi, a rechargeable battery and possibly some gyroscope type mechanism so it can be turned and aimed on the spot by remote control (sigh ... if only) you could connect it via USB and use it as a webcam
Thief figurines of characters including bots, maw creatures and spiders
costumes for other factions too

CLEVER, SUBTLE stuff that people who have played the games will get Please, no THI4F plastered across the front of my shirt or poster. Again, subtle allusions to the game on shirts and posters suffice (and again, look at some of Valve's merchandise). First of all, I'm not a walking advertisement. Secondly, while I like neat and clever merchandise, I'm not an ubergeek that proudly displays what video games he plays.
EDIT: The less text on the shirt/poster, the better IMHO.

Before reading others' inputs, my suggestions colored by the Ultima series.
Cloth map, possibly of the City, though one from a key mission would be nice too.
Trinket, usable as a necklace pendant, a distinctively Keeper Key would be my choice. There could different ones floating about. Try to make them reasonably durable.
CD with a full music soundtrack.
Editor, version available on release (note that I still suggest a spruced up version available with a remake of Thief 1&2 released 'shortly' after Thief 4)
Temporary Thief tats?
Keeper caligraphy set? (we all need to improve our handwriting.)
I don't much care for figurines and other things which break easily/gets chewed by cats and dogs and little brothers. Realistic Lockpicks and weapon replicas might be a nogo with shipping legalites and over protective parents.
Edit: thoughts on others' ideas, and some newer ones:
And I demand the box be a trapezoidal prism. YES! Although, a box which was a lockable 'Keeper' book with the insides cut out is an interesting idea...probably too expensive.
Firstly, all these things should be separately purchasable at the Eidos Thief store...contradictory but yeah.
Hooded Cape/cloak, YES! Preferably with subtle inscriptions woven in, and be actually comfortable, with pockets (some hidden ones), water repellent and warm.
Art Book. And a thoughtful non-schlocky glosssy Graphic novel, and a comic which is.
Useful thiefsie satchel, w/logos and other Thief clues are on the inside...hidden compartment! [edit2] Actually, this by itself would make for a good 'Box' that the Deluxe set comes in. If so, make sure this is well constructed... far too often these are held together with metal bits which ruin the threading. Blue-black, and goes well with the Cloack/Cape. Nothing glossy, no velcro or other non-steampunk era materials, though being subtly water resistant is always good. Leather would be going too far.

I am definately on board for a replica arrow of a certain type. Maybe keep it elemental;only the ones that glow in the artwork (water, moss, fire, gas). Could put a random one in each box. I know I'd be on Ebay trying to get one of each.

The capes would suck, though, being of a uniform length. Thus, for instance, for me I am 100% sure it would be too small.:(
Or will the package of the game have on it "Now coming with an XXL-sized cape for your convenience"? :D

expanding on the lockpick idea...Metal CE box thats locked and has lockpicks attached outside(you want in, you gotta pick it open yourself :P) lol not really serious but would be kinda funny.
Maybe a 1/2000(rough figure, change it to whatever is practical) of getting signed concept art or signed whatever(manual maybe) in a CE box(making it a REAL collectors edition).

ART BOOK
And yes, a huge soft cloth map of the City would be absolutely incredible.
I love the Cloth map idea, I like to cover my room in game maps, Though a cloth one would have special treatment, Of couse.
I'd like:
- Cloth map of the city
- Concept art book
- Glyph book, Similar to concept book but it'd have all the different glyphs from the games and what they mean/ are used for.
- Flashbomb or Mechanical Eye paperweight, It'd probably work better with a flashbomb though
- And maybe a 30 minute "making of" dvd.
A few extras wouldnt be a bad thing either ;D

2) A Thief Hoodie, modelled on Garret's attire
3 Hammer Haunt get up to scare your friends
4) A selection of pens that looked like Thief weapons
5) Action figures for the kiddies including a Pagan that talks and A Garret with Blackjacking action

What if the "collector's edition" would include nothing extra? Instead, a game completely built around the idea that gaming consoles never existed. This would cost 30$ more on the PC but less on the consoles because "everyone knows that when you design a game for PC, it's impossible to even think about playing it on a console" This way the publishers would "get back" the so-called "losses" that have been caused by software piracy on the PC, because everyone that's played Thief on the PC would instantly pay 30$ extra for an unbutchered version of the new game.
Only after seeing that the "collector's edition" has been sold out and the standard consolized version hasn't been touched, the publishers see the fallacy of their delusion that the only way to ensure profits is to consolize the living taff out of PC games. The whole idea that console players can't operate sophisticated controls, see small details or think with their brain is a lie. It only applies to fans of games that are completely based on flashy colors, button mashing, big action and boobs, like Halo, Guitar hero or DOA. But no developer is ever going to take the chance of developing a true PC game to a console just to test that theory.
Oh, I'll buy the collector's edition. But only if the game is actually based on Thief. -1 and 2 to be precise.

and a cloth map would be awesome
along with a couple of lock pics
art work book
making of dvd with cut scenes music etc etc
mechanical garrets eye would be so cool but id be dissapointed because id want it to work and be able to look like a complete idiot and wear it admit it you all would if you could:rasp:
also a 20-minute episode would be awesome like is being done for so many games these days like eg: dead space downfall movie sets the game up perfectly
and the new assasins creed linage episodes

id be willing to pay between £70-100 ($100-150)depending on what the content on the exclusive editon was
1 more thing i know its prob not at the moment but sooooo want this on console as ive never played the other thiefs only deadly shadows on the original xbox and was completly taken away when i played that game was awesome :-)

I think some simple merchandise would do well enough. Action figures, shirts, posters and art books(my personal favorite merchandise), things like that.
The question is: What is the theme of the new game going to be?
Dark Project was about the Pagans
Metal Age was about the Hammers and Mechanists
Dark Shadows was about the Keepers.
Unless they are thinking about making something from each faction, I'd assume they would have primarily relevant items from the new game and theme.

flashbomb (maybe uber bright flashlight or something) whit some knob inside (and button on tob) and that knob controls how fast it blinks (0 = no blink, 100 = 1 blink in 5 seconds, 1 = 9999 blinks on 1 second xP)
city map :3
soundtrack cd
(cant belive no one has suggested THIS one yet :0)
Arrow, that has crystal on head but it has 3 knobs (knob methoids: 1. wireless controller, 2. see pic A ) Red knob, blue knob and green knob, then there is power button too.. and on that crystal there is 3x (or less or more) MULTICOLOR leds so that u can change the color of the leds whit that controller 83
dont rly care about flashbomb but i realy would like to see that multicolor arrow :D (whit multicolor you could create your own elemental arrows, pinkarrow and stuff like that)

While not a bad idea, I think adding something like an LED to a replica arrow would make it look less genuine while increasing the cost by quite a bit.
With regards to the arrows, I think the best idea is to either give a full arrow, or just the crystal part of one. I think randomly distributing the four colors would allow for nuts like myself to collect them. Or on second thought, they don't even have to be random. They could have 4 versions of the Collector's Edition box. They could use the same image, with the only change being the color of the arrow (which should be worked into the image like in Thief 1/G/2) indicating the color of the replica inside. No? Yes?

I LOVE the idea of a huge cloth map of SouthQuarter and the rest of the neighbourhoods!! That and a Thief hoodie are my favourites! It may be a little silly, but a soft leather blackjack is kinda cool too.
For the cover art, how about a lock? Don't think they could make it pickable. But if they did, everyone would have to 'break into' their game box before they could play Thief... :D

I'm on board for the map idea too. However, should they decide to make a map, I think it should be comprehensive and attempt to take in elements of the three games. I know there was/is a group of individuals who were working on such a map. I think their work, should they desire it, be utilized by the developers. (With all the appropriate shout-outs to those whose efforts were involved. Sorry for not knowing you by name.)

I'm not a fan of comprehensive maps for Thief. Seeing the town map in Thief 3 ruined the feeling of a Thief "universe" for me. I'm more okay with just a section of town being portrayed. Maybe one of the bigger or more detailed maps in T2 would be cool.

you're not okay with extra and bonus things, like unlocks, being made for the game itself, but you're okay with time, energy and resources being spent on these things? What happened to your philosophy of how every last resource should be toward making flawless gameplay? Just curious. An observation I'm curious to hear your reply to.

I see you concern. I should have noted that by comprehensive, I meant that it would include a large segment of territory, but not attempt to be so detailed as to have every single street. I guess it doesnt really work, but the mapping project I spoke about was neat, and I would love to see a polished version of it on my wall. By no means should they try to simply or remove the mystery surrounding the city; that would be a mistake.
you're not okay with extra and bonus things, like unlocks, being made for the game itself, but you're okay with time, energy and resources being spent on these things? What happened to your philosophy of how every last resource should be toward making flawless gameplay? Just curious. An observation I'm curious to hear your reply to.this uses marketing people rather than game developers, the game developers aren't responsible for the artwork on the box the game comes in, nor would they be responsible for the design of T shirts with Thi4f on them for example
in a large company like Square-Enix marketing budgets will be completely separate from development budgets
DarknessFalls
12-08-2009, 06:42 AM
But it still would cost money to make these things, Theres only so much money, and when you apply additional money to marketing to do this stuff then there is less money for IT to do their stuff. I'm not saying I'm against some of these things.
It's like with UM making an Assassins Creed movie. That cost money. And the money spent making that movie couldve been spent on the actual game.
in an ideal world I'd agree, and yes ultimately the money does come out of the same coffer
however in my experience of corporate IT, everyone fights for their budget, marketing always gets a huge chunk of dosh, development gets just barely enough and once assigned the money never gets reassigned, so no matter what happens with marketing it won't affect development and vice versa
marketing always had better jollies as well
that said SE/EM could do their finances differently

I had to shake my head a couple of times as I read the wishes. Of course people have different opinions and stuff, but think it over first. Personally I think that it's not a good idea to take anything specific of Hammerites, Pagans or such. Because some people don't like Hammerites or some don't like Pagans so why would they like to pay anything of having their merchandise? This is Thief's collector's edition, so let's stay in the common Thief-stuff also.
When ya look at the other collector's editions they have gone the normal way: Artbook, Making of DVD, Soundtrack, game, maybe some extra missions, poster and a figure of somekind. That's what everyone is ready to pay for, I'm sure.
T-shirts wouldn't be that good idea to have in the collector's edition either. They could as well go and sell them separate in their own shop, because... There are fans that are size 10 or 15, BUT there also are fans that are size 4 to 7. So, my point is that should they have different sized t-shirts in editions? Too troublesome.
And uh... Arrows? I understand flashbombs, but arrows? Not saying that it's idiotic to want one, but still I don't think all the fans would like to get one. Personally I have no use for one.
Trinkets... Well, why would they make trinkets when people can go and buy and create their own fillings of the "treasure chest"?
Lockpicks aren't that bad, but again: you can buy own from the shops that are specialized or from the internet shops. And locks are the same. Mechanical eye is a good idea and unique, you won't have it anywhere else so that's a good example of a trinket fans would like to have.
I'm not sure about the playingcards either... There are cards of WoW, I understand it, but Thief is a lot different thing. 'Course one option would be to put from one to three Art Cards go with the Artbook, it would be nice. There is also the money issue. Would you like to have let's say... Build-an-arrow -set rather than a good quality figure of Garrett? They don't have money for all of the stuff.
What I am trying to say is that think what would be good for everyone. We can't have all of it, but we can affect to that what would please all of the fans. Let's work for that.

I think some witty tee shirts would be good. You know, the simple white text on black shirt type that is sort of funny for someone who doesn't know the games, and really great for those that do. Maybe a quote from Garrett or Benny, or some other guard.
Something like that. And a little THIEF logo on the back or something. Nothing big or flashy.

If the Collector's Edition contained some or all of the following, it would be a dream come true:
-25 or 32mm metal figure of Garrett (unpainted).
-Soundtrack CD.
-Hardcover art book.
-DVD with making of, interviews and cutscenes (including the ones from the first games).
-A DVD containing both Thief Gold and Thief II updated to work with Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7.
-Posters and/or The City Map.

A little replica mechanical eye as a keyring or whatever is something I could get behind, same for an artbook. Action figures would just get tossed in the trash and I wouldn't be seen dead wearing video game branded clothing. That'd be worse than a wolfshirt.
I agree with whoever said that a map of the City would be a bad idea - part of the appeal is in the unknown, in allowing your imagination to fill in the blanks. Putting hard limits on the size, scope or layout (other than vague references we've already seen) just remove some of that thrill for me.
Anyway Thief isn't like the old Ultima games where a large scale map would actually be useful. Thief games are split up into relatively small and confined spaces - even TDS's "open" City sections were small and cramped.

speaking of Special Edition and Merchandise.
Take a look at the Bioshock 2 special edition:
http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/videogames/detail-page/bioshock2.se.lg.jpg
It comes with a vinyl and cd of the musical score, a hardcover art book, and three Rapture propaganda posters.
Now think of something like that applied to Thief 4?
Maps for posters,
Game score on cd,
Artbook!?
I'm probably going to be ending up buying the Bioshock 2 special edition because for 40 more dollars than the game, I think the extra goodies are worth it..
But following that logic, it shouldn't be hard to try for something similar for Thief 4.. Maybe some goodies for nostalgic purposes, like concept art from the older games or fun stuff like that.
Ho René!
I was looking at the EM Store, and I noticed it says that for purchases of US $100 or more (before tax and shipping), we'll get an exclusive poster with our order. Is this a Deus Ex 3 poster, or is there a mystery Thief 4 poster? And if it's a T4 poster, is it just the logo?
