wt... is that?

A group of fans placed all the original Thief missions, from all 3 games, into a map of the City & its surrounds, and filled in all the gaps left by the fiction to make it as complete as possible. (link (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1703346#post1703346)).

I just did an artistic version of their work (and still need to fix it up a bit).

The map isn't "official", but it uses only official sources and is about as good as you can get otherwise, considering the great amount of work that went into it.

DiegoFloor
05-12-2009, 03:52 PM
I think we just hijacked the 'official' art thread. lol

Oh what the hell.. it's easier to create a new thread for the official art, when it comes, than to move all this. So I'm posting my fan art too! :D (maybe tomorrow, I have to dig my computer to find this stuff)

Yeah, you're right, but I always had the impression that the red tattoos on the blue craybeasts were "war markings" for the Trickster's reorganised army. The neutral "civilian" craymen didn't have any tattoos. I'd like to see the beasts again. Not as wild, mindless monsters, but real intelligent "people" that have a society somewhere and certain norms and habits. :) Some of them could as well be working with the pagans. Imagine a pagan camp in the wilderness, a bugbeast is standing in the vicinity with a spear in her hand, guarding the place and singing like always, and a few human pagans are warming themselves by a fire, and a crayman is sitting on a stump and skinning hares and hanging their hides to dry on the branches. "Clicking"... :)

I believe that the larger, blue Craymen were Craybeast and a part of Constantine's army. They smally, yellow/brown ones were more like neautral creatures. Atleast that's always been my understanding.

Herr_Garrett, I don't know why it's so obvious to me, but I was bothered by the fact that your Hammerite-themed picture has more woodsie stuff and less metal, and the pagan pic has all kinds of manfool citystuff and it's far less organic.

The uniform is part T1/T2, part TDS, because I couldn't imagine anyone trying to sit down in the Hammerite get-up from the first two games.

Anyway, Herr_Garrett, that looks incredible. If I made that, that would be the best work of my lifetime ;) Love the details in the silhouettes. But yeah. I'm actually writing a two piano piece based on the Hammerites (although no one's going to know that except me!) So even though I'm not very good at drawing, I might post something here that is a little more in my field. :)

EDIT: Fixed the ear! Uh, even though he's technically not supposed to even have a visible ear :\

If you try to piece together Garrett's face from TDP and TMA, it gets rather difficult, because it would seem that he's not the same in all of them. Sometimes his nose is longer, sometimes his lips are closer to his chin, sometimes they're larger or smaller... it's rather difficult to get a good idea of what he looks like.

It's supposed to be that way. The way the faces are always different is an artistic technique that gives the impression that Garrett has never been seen, so nobody really knows what the looks like. :p

We be thievin By Hypevosa (6/16/09 8:00AM)

Pickpocket the keys and we be thievin yo… (thievin yo)
Make sure no one sees then we be leavin yo… (leavin yo)
Take a look at the guards now dey be fumblin yo… (fumbling yo)
Now we on de roofs we get to take it slow… (take it slow)

So when you see the guard’s a gloatin don’t promote ‘im,
cause he ain’t caught me, ya know I smoked ‘im,
I’m da best thief in all de nation, and ain’t never seen incarceration,
It for me thievin support an’ for the rentin’
An’ the tools that I’m usin to make de thousan’ an’
Don’t got other occupations,
soon I’ll retire, gotta have patience…

Everynight, we be thievin, self-concealin only guards are left awake,
we be stealin, none believin in the massive ‘mount we make.
All dat gold and silver, diamonds, jewels off to the fence we take.
Realize it, lost all don’t deny it!

The goods these stores make, it’s amazin
Flashbombs for sure’ll keep they eyes ablazin,
Not de only in my occupation,
But de only one with Keeper education
So I know where to go, to make me not show,
When to move real quick and when to move slow,
Ace with de bow, hit anyt’in,
A torch from 50 yard wit’out strugglin
If eva I seen den I know I can take ‘im
Cause keeper trainin means master swordsman
But I don’ eva need ta fight,
Cause I use the shadows to keep outta sight
Always get all the gold and no one knows it,
Even find all the bits they think is secret
And, gone into da night, by rooftop in the moon light

Again, we be thievin, self-concealin only guards are left awake,
we be stealin, none believin in the massive ‘mount we make.
All dat gold and silver, diamonds, jewels off to the fence we take.

Thank you! Glad you liked. I'm from Brazil, btw :)

Both these images were made with 3ds Max for modeling and rendering, Photoshop and Corel Painter for painting the texture maps and post production. In the one with the trickster I also used Mudbox to sculpt a high poly version to generate a detail displacement map.

I agree with your impressions on Garrett. It's a rather old image, not only my skills were inferior, he does look a little "bloom-esque".. lol.. A more fierce looking face would do him good :) Funny you compare him to Orlando Bloom, it's hard to see with that hood, but I have images without the hood that are REALLY similar to him! Another masterpiece, Platinum, but why does it need a loincloth? :D

I wanted to give her a sort of tribal-look. This bugbeast is not the late Trickster's slave anymore, she's a pagan citizen.
And since she would look stupid without the female form of chest, and naked boobs apparently don't look good on insects, I left them for the imagination. I'm planning to make some weird accessories for the craybeast too, and make it a little more soldier-ish.

Umm... I am having a problem with the language / character / font thing. So...

That is the revival of the five cross flag that Georgia ("Sakartvelo") used in the 13th century, depicting the cross of St. George, their patron saint. [Originally the King of Georgia in the 5th century used the single large red cross, and the four extra crosses were added probably during the reigns of George V (1299 to 1302 and 1314 to 1346) of Georgia, and the five crosses represent the Holy Wounds of Christ.]

I think that the word on the lower R is "Freedom" which is the title of their national anthem, but I'm not sure of the word on the upper left... Victory? Strength?

The national motto "Dzala ertobashia" is "Strength is in Unity" which comes from a fable (about a king with 30 sons and the king had asked his sons break arrows, one by one, but when he asked them to break the arrows all at once and they could not).

Made a concept for the appearance of a member of a Necromancer community. I came up with an idea that the organised practicioners of necromancy view living flesh as shameful, and they cover themselves up from head to toe. Their attire, art and decorations consist of black, dark purple and blood-red, and they are the only faction that possesses the skill of processing "lignite" or also known as "jet-wood". Most of their jewelery and valuables are made out of this fossilized, polished wood and they have never sold or given this material to anyone outside their order.

Hypevosa

if I put garrett a little lower, it doesn't make the h look like much of a 4 at all, I was actually thinking I could shift him up so his head cut off the left protrusion of the H so it looked more so like a 4, but then it wouldn't look as much like an H. so you can see my dilemma.

DarknessFalls

I've seen that T4IEF logo on a couple different monitors now, one CRT and one LCD and the Thief character doesn't show up very well. DIdn't even know it was there at first and wondered what all the hubbub was about :) It is a nice tought... but I'll reiterate my T4OUG4TS that I posted in a different thread:

* I think it'd be better to just go with Thief IV. Some might see T4IEF as above and just think it's the original Thief game (maybe they'd think the 'h' is smudged/scratched out, or their mind still reads it as an 'h')... Thus, loss of potential sales. I think it'd be misread by too many people.

Case in point - when I first saw it, I thought someone was just reposting the original Thief logo. When I saw the comments, I took a closer look. It's an awesome twist, probably better than Th4f ... but I hope EM doesn't use it on the final product, sorry. I want the classic roman numeral (Thief IV: _insert name here_). That would be more in tradition (and a taffin' tribute) to the classic T1/T2 games than T4ief, imo.

Yes, that's what I liked in this pic, you have actually to look well to realise it is talking about thief 4 and not simply thief. It was a hint to the nature of this game.

Then again, I realise that a company really doesnt want to loose not even one buyer from such a misunderstanding.

Personally I would very much like a Thief IV, or a simple Thief: BlahBlah.

I would be more positive to the idea of transforming the "f" to "4" somehow, because you can't spell it wrong even if you try "THIE4" - thieffour. Still sounds like "thief 4" even if the "f" turns to a clear "4" like the "working title logo"

Garrett is happy now, he has a brand new life
Very big house in Auldale and a beautiful wife

He'll never steal anymore 'cause he's rich enough
Besides he is too old for all this stuff

But he cries everynight because of his sins
Whenever he starts, a lonely bird sings

I am taffin' you of course, these are merely lie
Instead to see all of this I prefer to die

Haha.:D Funny right?

Hamadriyad - Nice, the face could be a bit more visible, but yeah, generally it looks good and quite mysterious :)

After today's Forum disscussion about the possible introduction of Mechanist Haunts, I came up with a quick concept of such variant of undead. Hm, he seems to resemble a bit a certain cartoon supervillain ;)

I always wondered where do the dark red flames come through in the Haunts, I thought it would be cool if the flames would come out from the sides of his mouth and maybe a little through his eyes when he gets angry. :p

But listen to the fellow posters here. Inhale the positive comments you get, and take them to you :D

You have talent, your work is amazing. Seriously, apply to EM. I'm quite sure a few of them at EM have already seen your work... I'm no professional, but I've seen many fanartists and modelers etc. doing works for a game. And well, the work you do would suit amazingly into Thief 4, if it'll look like we all hope it will ;D

I don't think they got better artists as you say, but perhaps at the same level as you are.
If you got the time and motivation, give it a shot :)
But do not doubt to try it because you think that they would do a better work without you, it's humble of you, but listen to the community :)

These are the published scans of the official paintings used in the cutscenes that were animated in Photoshop, composited with the green-screen silhouette live-action, and assembled into what we've seen. The detail here is nice since they haven't been processed and compressed heavily.

By the way, we see Garrett with a hook, not a rope arrow.(in this and a few other paintings).I guess it was the idea at first. But they decided rope arrow later.

Yeah, he had a crossbow and a grappling hook at first. The crossbow made it into the early versions of the game, but I don't think the grappling hook ever was implemented at all.

This is what Angelwatch looks like from the Belltower when all the rest of Dayport is deleted and the fog turned off. Because of the distance, some textures aren't rendered, as well as some objects.

Here's the old stuff, with a little fan work at the top.
http://www.great-thief.fatal.ru/freeartist-artgallery.shtml

Here's the thread at TTLG to sift through (the first poster's pics just disappeared this week, so a lot more could be missing):
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91447

You're gonna have a hard time finding any of the art made over the last ten years that's bigger than 1024 x 768 to use for wallpapers, without enlarging it. Other images might be bigger but will probably need cropping and resizing. But now that you've given your screen resolution, we'll see what comes available.

I'm so happy this didn't come to fruition at that time..

It would have used the same engine as T3, but we were hoping it would be optimized a bit more and get some new features.
Even more happy this didn't come to fruition. LOL.

At this point, I have to believe EM is going toward the old style thief, rather than a re-imagined updated version like that old T4 concept art shows. Why else would they let us run amuck for so long here in this forum they're watching, as we talk about how we want the old stuff to come back. Seems like it'd be a waste of their time and our time to have us go so long on this stuff if we're not on the right track. Otherwise, if they make an announcement soon saying, "T1/T2 is dead; Garrett is gone; it's now 'the not too distant future'; the protaganist you will control carries an LED pocket light and LCD loot scanner device; and you will raid office buildings", well then... the last few months are a waste of everyone's time.

Gilleys, you would be surprised how hard it has become to make a living off artisitc talent. the world is largely coomercial and most industries that make use of those talents take advantage of them (just look at the screen-writers strike, all thopse brilliant writers were being underpaid and overworked!)

video game companies usually stand as an exception to this stereotype (as far as i know) but sadly, this wordly is slowly going down the chamberpot:(

I'm pretty sure they are, because they're not a short sword or a long sword... or at least not of typical medieval forging. You can tell because there's no cross guard as would be traditional, and because there's a distinct cloth cross wrapping on the handle, which is indicative of a japanese handle. However, they don't appear to be of length to be a katana, meaning they are wakazashi, or, at the very least, whoever made those swords has no idea how the handle of a european weapon is supposed to look.

Wakizashi (http://library.thinkquest.org/05aug/00716/wakizashi.jpg) - you'll notice the circular guard, cross cloth handle, and metal cap, as per what's in your picture on both weapons.

Short Sword (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31AATXYCQML._SL500_AA280_.jpg)
Short Sword (http://www.dfoggknives.com/images/Leafsword.jpg)
SHORT SWORD! (http://jodysamson.com/images/swords/4-17-06/short-sword.jpg") - Traditional medieval short sword with cross guard, followed by leaf bladed short sword (looks somewhat like a gladius, but the handle isn't thin enough), and then another short sword with proper cross guard etc etc.

I'm kind of a weapons nut... hell, I went to an exhibition at Case Western Reserve over near cleveland and spent hours looking at the stuff last summer. Trust me, knowledge I have in the realm of weaponry, though in experience I'm lacking because there aren't many places I can go use them and not get arrested :P. Whoever made those made either wakizashi, or made them with the traditional flair of japanese weaponry.

These are the published scans of the official paintings used in the cutscenes that were animated in Photoshop, composited with the green-screen silhouette live-action, and assembled into what we've seen. The detail here is nice since they haven't been processed and compressed heavily.

thanks!

here's a concept I did last week, how I see Garrett without so many shadows ;)

This is just how Garrett could look in facts. A guy not too tall, not too beautiful, with a cynic eye. Well done. :thumb:

Photoshop was used to manipulate the painted images, adding details like a sphere in Garrett's hand, moving the lips, tilting the heads, raising an arm, fluttering the leaves, transformations, jiggling a rope arrow, adding splinters from an arrowhead strike, and so on. Anything that wasn't done in front of the greenscreen was painted and manipulated.

Certainly another program was used to put it all together into a movie. :)

Certainly another program was used to put it all together into a movie. :)

That's what I meant. The main program wasn't Photoshop, but something other. Maybe Premiere, if it existed at the time. Also the old Macromedia's Flash editor implemented such kind of things.

jtr7
09-18-2009, 01:12 AM
When you see Viktoria's mouth moving, that's Photoshop manipulation, image by image, and you can even see how it's very minimal, like three images for one syllable, cross-faded into one another. You can see Karen Wolff using a drawing tablet to manipulate a frame in the "Making of..." video from the Thief Gold disc.

massimilianogoi
09-18-2009, 02:19 AM
Ok but the joint of the frame surely wasn't with PS.

jtr7
09-18-2009, 02:22 AM
Pan, zoom, glide, rotate... nope, not PS. Just pieces of images mushed around, backgrounds filled in when, say, an arm is clipped from the whole image and moved to raise a blade, as when Viktoria comes to Garrett's apartment to take him to meet Constantine. Viktoria's explosive-growth branch attack, painted in PS.

massimilianogoi
09-18-2009, 05:37 AM
Those explosive growths are childs of vectorial graphic that isn't implemented in Photoshop, as far as I know. You can find it in Flash.

Looks really nice (and the place looks like it could be one of the Thief maps :D). What is the meaning of this glyph? I am against doing tatoos, but a Thief tatoo has something mysterious to it and only the initiated will know what it is from (kinda like a secret real life Thief society, hehe), so maybe I'll do one, maybe.

I found this (http://thief.nov.ru/glyphs.htm) site with many Thief glyphs, I only would like to know the meanings.

Good site!

This is the Keeper glyph - it's the desktop icon for Deadly Shadows and probably the easiest to recognise for a Thief fan. Admittedly, I prefer Dark Project/Metal Age, but I liked the idea of having something that might actually be recognised by another fan, and glyphs were not used as heavily in the first two games as they were in the third.

I have no body modifications at all at the moment, not even pierced ears, so I'm a little apprehensive. I guess we'll see what my pain threshold's up to :nut:

Are you sure you're going to put it on your hand like that?
As far as I know you should only put tattoos on placed where they don't stretch to much, places like your shoulder, neck(?) and your hands are places to avoid putting a tattoo on or it would look like a mess after some time.
I DO believe having a glyph tattoo is a cool thing to do, but I recommend putting it on your arm, your chest, upper back or ankle.

Just my opinion, feel free to ignore ;)

Well, the palm is a traditional place for henna, and since I am far more familliar with henna I just went with that. I really liked the location because it's less common for ink tattoos... but perhaps it's less common for a reason! I don't know if it will hurt more because the palm is so sensitive. I suppose I'll have to ask some professional tattoo artists.

I will definitely think on your advice :)

hehe, see the thing is that I'm quite skilled with adobe photoshop but I can't make art myself. So I trow in a bunch of humor and improvisation and edit that instead. I made the same picture more 3d-ish in photoshop but found that it would look way better as it was before I edited it. long live msPaint!
I also tried making flash movies but found out I couldn't animate at all but I can code a lot in flash so now I help Albi (http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=91294) with his flash by coding the menu while he does all the animating, it's stupid because I always wanted to be able to draw and animate but I'm really bad at it. I work as an intern at a company that makes websites and when they found out my designs where... "not-qualified" they make me do PHP, which is the code behind the website. So I now I gave up on making decent art, story of my life:mad2::lol:

This is exactly what I don't want EM doing... completely yanking away any mysteriousness or mystique Garrett has by over-exposing him like this. He looks like he's standing under a fluorescent lamp there. I respect the piece as a work of art if that's someone's work here, but beyond that I don't like that Garrett is fully revealed.

More shadows, EM! Especially covering at least like 90% of his face. More mysteriousness!

We (well me and several others here) don't want to see his full face or your interpretation of his full face 'ever.' Not in-game in a mirror; not in-game with a 3rd person camera swiveling around to reveal it; not in cutscenes; not anywhere. Yes, T1 and/or T2 did sometimes show more than they should have in a cutscene or two; but they throttled this big-time and didn't completely ruin his mystique like TDS did. I would like EM to take Garrett back to his mysterious, loner roots.

When I played TDS, Garrett wasn't as fun to play for many reasons including that Garrett was no longer shrouded in mystery.

BlackAladin
09-25-2009, 09:29 PM
I too love the idea of Garrett being shrouded in mystery...It is one of the big draws of the game that keeps me coming back to play...The imagery of this guy who can melt in and out of shadow...steal anything, knock out anyone and get away.

What kind of shoes should a foreign strange wizard wear then? Those pointy arab-sheik shoes? And since the necromancers (In my theory) refuse to show any living tissue, I couldn't have him wear only the sandals, without the socks.

I have to say I really want to know things like target platforms plus projected hardware and software requirements over concept art, basically do I need to start budgeting for new kit

then there are a few other queries like will Garrett be the protagonist, will there be rope arrows and swimming ... the sorts of things that could be released without giving any plot secrets away but might stimulate more productive ideas from boards like this one

although I am still extremely interested in the concept art :D

Are there any other maps in-game that confirm this layout of the globe?

jtr7
11-02-2009, 02:44 PM
Heh. It's my first attempts to make anything like this, so it should look amateurish. Thanks, Herr_Garrett. :)

As for another map in-game, there's no confirmation, but there's the Navigation Globe from Precious Cargo, but the visible continent looks like a cross between Anarctica and Australia/New Zealand, but flipped vertically. It's possible to justify the difference in appearance by having it on the opposite, hidden face, somewhere. Gervaisius is a traveler and hunter, going out beyond The City into the wild, as well as having his well-known penchant for collecting artifacts from abroad, along with Bafford, so I would say that makes the globe more likely to be representative of the World.

This looks arbitrary, and it's doubled in size from the gamefile that's used to texture the Navigation Globe:

hey everybody!

I'm presenting my first thief-artwork (beside a costume-art work ^^ ) ever.
It's a scene from the cataclysm that deserted the old quarter (aka: Foulmarket, Foulsquare or Old-Eastquarter). Poisonous fumes are roaming the streets, making the sick and reamaining fleeing citizens vomit and collapse. Inbetween, a haunt, searching for some victims... and survivers.

It's the first thing I made with my graphic tablet and photoshop. So I really messed up with the fire in the background and some other things... I wanted to add more details in the foreground but it didn't went well... This picture is part of a book (the chronicles of Foulsquare) about the whole incident (wich has over 35 pages by now).

Hey Andreyy00

You need to open an account with a picture hosting site. I use photobucket.
http://photobucket.com/
Upload your picture, then under it you will have a 4 little boxes with an html link in them.
The bottom one labeled img is what you need. Copy the whole link.
Start a post and click on the link button, (not the image one, photobucket includes img tags) and post the link you copied.
That should do it.

...sneaking through an important building somewhere. I know it sucks. But I'll try to improve it when I shall have more time; suggestions are welcome.

Looks good. Just proportions seem a little out of whack.

The guard's head size makes him look like a tall dwarf (especially with the big curly beard) and the Keeper's face looks a bit long and drawn out.

I'd also step the shading intensity and transition up a notch so you can plunge the Keeper's face (and the whole image) into more shadow, personally :)

Do you mean Shadow Prowler? I have it on pre-order as it's not published in English until next year. I looked at the original publish date and it seems to be 2002. Thief The Dark Project was first published in 1998.

To my mind it's the worst book I've ever read.. Too much fervor and fantastic, nothing in common with thief from the game, only name and line of business. Really dont like this kind of literature, and very sad that Pehov choose Garret for his cheap stories.

Hmm... maybe I should cancel my preorder until I've read some reviews of the English edition. The little blurby bits make it sound like Robin Hobb writing a Taffer character. I guess it was too good a premise to be true. :hmm:

Actually I can' help myself wondering... Did Pehov play Thief first and then wrote the book?? 'cause some levels in the game and scenes from the book pretty much alike...OMG xD It might be so - I saw an interview with Pehov. He said he writes mostly for fun and wasn't waiting for book to become a success. But anyway - I read it loooong time ago - when I was a fantasy-freak. Since then I love this story))))) Maybe if I've read it now - I wouldn' like it so much. Who knows?)))) But I doubt that :D

Hy!

Here are some idea of the game:

-new logo (not the THI4F, this is terrible)
-smaller labels, text, unlike the older version (for easy readability)
-open, free-roaming city area (should be varied)
-living in the city: men, women, children, young and old people (realism)
-advanced AI
-long and enjoyable gameplay

options:
-roof to go
-eg. skylights to get into the house
-rope climb over one building to another,...
(so be more opportunities) (do not be boring and unanimous)
-to break into the house of strangers (realism)
-the windows are made of clear glass
-more opportunities for the achievement of missions (eg. as in Hitman)
-more opportunities for weapons and tools (eg. as in Splinter Cell)

one possible approach:
-the terrain could be a large, well-thought-out, diverse city (with port, factories, brothels, guilds, church, bridges,... ,green areas (forest, cave,...)
-alternating the days and nights
-we switch between day and night (no set time frame)
-days in incognito (such as Batman) to map the terrain, collect information, weapons and other items to buy,...
-the - stealth - missions are carried out at night
-to haunt your house could be

the most important thing:
-retaining the atmosphere of the previous section

Merry Christmas and Good Work!

My take on the Kurshok. In my opinion they didn't really look fish-like, so... I tried to emphasise it a bit. He's a hunchback since fish live in the damn water, for gods' sakes, bipedalling their way on ground would put an extremely large load on their spines... Which would be hereditary; especially that by now they've lived underground for time immeasurable.

I couldn't quite fathom why they should have huge black eyes, either. They would either be blind (which would be more creepy, in a way), or having ordinary fish-eyes, albeit enlarged.

This whole Kurshok concept was ****ed up, like oh so many things in DS.

Anyway. Click!

Has anyone got flash animation talent? I'm a noob with flash so I don't know how to make rotating non-euclidean objects, so I'm just throwing my idea out for someone who might me enthusiastic enough to create it.

I was thinking of mechanist symbology. A stained glass window is just a stained glass window, but what if the forms were actual gears, rotating with, parallel and inside one another? those gears could be placed in front of a window or another light source, like a burning boiler, and the gears themselves would have different coloured stained glass panels fitted to the hollow areas within them. They would all rotate simultaneously, and the result would be a nice animated window that shines different colors through, depending on which color panels happen to pass eachother.

Wouldn't that be awesome if a mechanist cathedral really had windows like that? :D
This pic only has a few gears, but they could be set up in many different ways. And there are no different colored stained glass panels because I can't do that with Paint. (Plus the gears don't have any "teeth" because it would've taken forever to draw them in raster graphics)

Awesome idea, but not exactly feasible - where would the axles of the cogs be placed? Especially the small ones in the big one - they go round as well. I feel that pulleys and rigging would rather spoil the effect.

I didn't draw the cogs. I'd still be making them next week if I started today.

The small ones in the middle are lodged between the large gear and the middle gear, which is between the pulleys. I thought I thought it through and I didn't see anything wrong with it.

Edit: Now I see that at least the upper and lower gears wouldn't necessarily stay there. They'd need some axles.

A couple years ago, I made a couple audio fan-works like short skits from the original audio files (old taffers at TTLG may recall), which I'm planning to re-upload. Anyway, I saved this really hilarious post by a taffer titled "The Emotional Rollercoaster of Being a Thief Fan" which I think chronicles the history of Thief very succinctly. I may do a more full mix with SFX, crowd roaring, etc, but for now, hope y'all (at least those who were around back in the day) enjoy:

I didn't draw the cogs. I'd still be making them next week if I started today.

The small ones in the middle are lodged between the large gear and the middle gear, which is between the pulleys. I thought I thought it through and I didn't see anything wrong with it.

Edit: Now I see that at least the upper and lower gears wouldn't necessarily stay there. They'd need some axles.put the gears between two panes of glass, put holes for axles through the glass for the top and bottom gears, drive the assembly with an extra gear hidden in the frame at the side linked to the large central gear which will probably need an undriven supporting bearing on the opposite side, the cyclics in the middle should look after themselves

That's what I was thinking. Too bad that I'm not in the Thief 4 dev team so I can't put my ideas of a fully mechanized neo-mechanist church to good use. No, not like Soulforge, more like Soulforge x 1000. :D

I don't think that would be necessary. And it would look cool if the light shining through the gears casts moving shadows everywhere. :)

What I don't understand is why there are no teeth to your gears? o.O While I like it as is, toothed gears would look more mechanist to me. As it stands I was imagining a sideways gear in the wall that would spin and cause the bottom gear to spin, and another at the top which would cause the top gear to spin in the opposite direction, both working the middle gear.

That or if the chains to either side of the main gear fit the teeth of the large gear, you could have the taught chains on pulling up and down so that they turn the middle gear which turns the other gears.

Gears are fun to work with, this reminded me of when I worked at the great lakes science center and we had a set of plastic gears that you could work into a wall with holes in it so they could interact.... or was that somewhere else? eh.

I already explained. I drew them with Paint, and I'd still be drawing it if I'd drawn the teeth. I use Paint so I'm pretty patient, but I'm not THAT patient. Especially since they would've ended up looking much worse than the rest of the picture and that would've been inconsistent.

There's a free program you can get on download.com called Serif Drawplus that seems to function mostly like paint with a few added features from photoshop. If you want to give that program a try it may allow you to add new levels to your drawings. The thing I found pertinent to this project is the ability to create a custom transformation (scale/rotation) that would allow you to make a tooth for a gear, copy it, and then rotate it to the proper degree for the circle and repeat till you had a toothed gear. If you wanna try it out it may be worth your time :D

I always thought the gas bomb design was overcomplicated in TDS (And the weapon itself is overpowered) because I think the simplest design could be a glass ball with liquid inside. Like the VX in "The Rock"

But I guess the mechanical grenade design was more suitable to the steampunk world.

It was harder than I thought it would be to find a gear with the right amount of teeth, lest I'd have to draw out my own. But the metals instructor had a big ol' nast oily one sitting around that was perfect, and I photocopied and shrunk it.

Out of the way of his eyes and weapons, as well as providing easy hygiene, money saved on shampoo (!), less likely to catch fire or lice, heh heh, and without the hood, easier to build his model, and animate it or G in a cutscene. We definitely don't want to see Square-Enix giving Garrett long kinetic hero hair.

Who thinks Mosely should be the Sheriff in the time of T4? I'm drawing her and I was wondering that should she be Sheriff Mosely or Lt. Mosely?

jtr7
02-22-2010, 11:40 AM
She should be less than a Sheriff in another precinct altogether, if she knew what was good for her. She wasn't very good at keeping secrets, and never showed any desire for power, and if we make her out to be one of the more moral characters, she wouldn't bring attention to herself. And don't forget, many of the City Watch under Truart were former criminals, and/or had worked as guards for the Downwinders. It's possible the Baron never had much say in any investigation into Truart's assassination. The Sheriff is an elected official in The City, and Mosley would be stupid to campaign after the assassin left at least one piece of evidence behind already (Garrett saved her ass picking up those keys). Mosley's an unsung hero with six missions involving her, and post-TMA, it appears females are excluded from service again. She had a green-thumb, maybe she's at the edge of The City, working a small plot of land, but can kick the butts of any raiders, or taffers fleeing the authorities that try to hide in her storage shed, etc. Maybe a scene of her retiring her badge, packing up to leave her office, holding her pot of peonies (the ones she used to signal the pagan contact to schedule secret correspondence).

I always had the idea that when Hagen was framed and probably fired and Truart was murdered, (plus Garrett saved Mosely's ass) she would've been promoted to work as the sheriff since she was the next in rank. And since the Baron still hasn't returned or at least we haven't heard of it, Truarts model of city watch should still be functioning. (Without the kidnappings of course.)

And BTW the reason why there were no female guards in TDS was because the devs were probably too lazy to create female guard models and record at least 2 new sets of voices.

Edit: Finished. I guess she'd be more comfortable in the labs and the crimescenes. So she's not the sheriff in this pic. :)

Indeed, but the uniform is very nice, looks like something the city-watch-girls would wear, except for the naked legs, they'd definitely wear some kind of leg protection, especially when doing cold night shifts.

EDIT: A women the posture of Platinumoxicity's Lt. Mosely drawing might be better indeed though.

Eyeballed it. It's hard to paint over a face with paint when you can't hide the layer on top.

If Hype meant imagining Garrett as a kind of Strider/Viggo Mortensen...I don't.

I imagine him less "refined" in the shape of the face, less gentile in the expression of the eyes, less sweet when he smiles and most defenitely with no long hair (but that's very personal indeed) as I associate having long hair with a kind of "dandynism" I don't think belongs to Garrett.

I see Garrett with more sqaured features, high cheekbones...kind of...James Hetfiled in darker colours (olive skin and brown hair). :D

If Garrett had little woodsie tendrils slip into his skull and pull out his eye, he has no reason to have a clean cut scar like that from a sword.

jtr7
03-09-2010, 05:52 PM
Exactly. The cutscene shows his eye is cleanly plucked, and there's no scar on or near his eye-lids, brow, orbitals, and the TMA scar is clearly not related to the plucking or viny entanglement.

Since neither the TMA cheek scar and the TDS long eye-intersecting scar are ever explained, what kind of scar should T4's Garrett have? Maybe he's got both the TMA and the TDS scars. And in T5, they could be connected with a diagonal scar. Maybe they are his personal marks, like ritualistic scarring, versus tattooing. Every time he saves The City, he scars himself, and he makes sure not to drink a healing potion so the scar tissue can really grow good.

In the world of comics, I believe that's called 'ret-conning' it.

I personally have no problem with it being explained as a wound from the whole Viktoria scene, despite the lack of scar in Thief 2. Like the whole thing with Klingons looking different in Star Trek. It's just a makeup change... no need to over-analyze.

But Karras made Garrett the eye before T2, when he was still a Hammerite.yes he did, this was before the schism that split the mechanists from the hammers, he was apparently tinkering at the time and created the eye before the hammers started to frown on creations of the builder that contained moving parts ... unless Cavador created the eye and Karras took the credit ... which is a possibility, Karras never seemed that bright to me

who knows what scars were concealed by the servants masks, considering they were reanimated corpses, the damage could be severe

Karras - ace mechanic, crap surgeon, sociopathic fruitloop

but there again I still reckon it was an overzealous artist who thought a scar would look good despite none having been shown before

jtr7
03-10-2010, 12:18 PM
Clocks were not conceived by heretics who put themselves in the seat of judgment. Gears and boilers are fine as long as they are not placed higher than the hammer in holiness and importance or worshiped. The Hammerites have had boilers and gears for long before the events of TDP, plus, they are pure steampunk, and the Hammers are the major builders of The City and its workings.

Platinumoxicity

jtr7

The gears and boilers, favored holy symbol of Mechanists, is the source of the confusion.

Hypevosa
03-10-2010, 03:35 PM
I think the difference lies in the worship of the product over the tools. It really exemplifies both sides.

The Hammers are concerned with how you get there, they worship the hammer, have a chisel from the builder, things like that. It's the tools that allow one to build.

The Mechanists are more concerned with the final product, the end result, regardless of the means to get there. The tools/means by which Karras sought to purify the world and bring the Builder back were horrid, terrible things, but to him his end justified the means.

To the hammers, the fact that you have built is more important, than what you have built. The act is more important than the result. The Mechanist is more concerned with what you have built and its quality.

Yes. The Hammers speak often of the taming, the driving out impurities, carving and shaping the crude elements, chopping off the sinful parts, and making something useful and good or destroying it completely. The Mechanists go further, as well as stating that, but asking what hast thou built, and taking pride in the self for the works.

I've always had an unreasonable, eerie dread of the Clocktower. Don't know why. Not of the level, but of the building itself, crouching on the horizon, like a huge lolling head... Anyway.

Very nice!
A bit too big in comparison with the other buildings IMO but looks very inspiring nonetheless.

Ah, I can't work on 3dsmax too much last times and thus, I couldn't find out. But I will. And I am sure there is a planty material for earth crystal, just I don't know yet. :)

Hey all

I don't post much but lurk quite a bit in the shadows (ok...bad pun) just had to say that I can't believe some of the amazing artwork that has been posted in absence of the 'official' stuff for the game....truely awesome!

On another note...someone...(not sure who) commented that maybe fans wanted a more 'modern' Garrett this time around...Not for me!

I am patiently waiting for the same ancient yet exciting Garrett to come back with another brilliant storyline to unravel.

Cheers

In 2005, the Ex-CEO of Eidos, Rob Dyer, stating an opinion not shared by too many Thief fans, started the rumor:
"People want another Thief, too. We'll make that series more modern, though...the Medieval thing's run its course."

Unfortunately that rumor hasn't died in the five years that followed.
