we will first taste the wine and THEN decide if this tavern is worth our while.
if it's one of that light-headed californian wastage that passes for "innovative reboot of a franchise" nowadays we will be staying at the old tavern that provided so much joy and mature satisfaction for us.

Hehe nice typo of me :o
And yes, that is true.
Even so I do think that Garrett needs to be involved somehow. Otherwise I really don't see how Eidos would survive due to all Theif fans flaming them for not having him somewhere in the game :P

Hallo!
My name is Nathan Rockwood, and I'm very happy to see this beginning!
Though I'm currently a teacher-in-training, I spend a lot of my free time freelancing as a game writer/developer (tabletop RPGs, not computer games; the Cortex system, the Serenity and Battlestar Galactica RPGs, etc), and one of my favorite activities has always been to roleplay in the Thief universe using homebrew game systems. I always look forward to more canonical stories and information!
Blessed be,
~Nathan

Hey there, good luck with the project. If you're reading and you're wondering, here's a couple of things you might want to consider:
1) Garrett stays.
2) Use Thief 2 as a guide; the series peaked there for a reason.
Hope it goes well.

Doesn't really come as a surprise but HURRAY! Thief 4 has officially been announced. That actually makes me happy. Now, let the whining begin!

The Thief series is the only PC game I've played since Meridian 59... and to think I purchased the original Thief out of curiousity and have an unhealthy love towards ever since. I don't have time to game, but dammit I'll make time for this one - whatever platform it lands on, I'll own for this game alone.
I registered simply to post my appreciation.
Eidos Montreal, thank you very, very much.

Oh yes, there will be much whine'ing in these halls. But I've got a good feeling about this, the thief series has always had a passionate following. Debate is good, from the IP that EM has picked up it really looks like they have a passion for Thief and Deus when you really care about an IP it shines through to the finished product ( ususally ;) )

Hey kids! I see a few names from TTLG here (I'm sure there are more that have taken on aliases, too) and I already feel at home. Think I'll stick around & peruse the T4 threads here for awhile. Especially since TTLG seems to be having server probs and there's only about 16 members who have access. ;)

Hi all!
I've been hoping for a new Thief game for so long...(From the moment I finished Thief DS,)(and no I never played Thief 1, but finished thief 2 and 3, and saw my brother play thief 1 from beginning to end)
BTW, just because I hear allot of people complaining about Thief DS, I don't get why. It was still an great game and I liked DS as much as I liked Thief 2.(why do I have the feeling I be killed for saying this...)
Looks like TTLG's exploded due to excessive traffic, I can't load the forums :lmao:
Saam's server is down. :( But Digi's working on it. Try http://212.227.54.9/forums/ though I warn you there's only about 16 people who have managed to access it so far! It's kind of like a ghost town there right now.

Hey everyone! I'm so taffin stoked for Garrett to make his misanthropic return!
I'm so glad Eidos is looking to renew the thief franchise because in this economy, you gotta have a winner, and with the fan base like it is, if they work their hearts out on this game, you know its going to make money! That aside, can you imagine the possibilities of thief 4?
Modern graphics - yes!
Advanced stealth - yes! (Not Assassin's creed style stupidity - even though I like that game :P
Return of the BEST video game story to ever see the light of day? Um, yeah I want that 2 ! !
Yeah, we can do without Assassin's Creed super acrobatics and repetitive missions.

Cool. Something to look forward too! I think Thief was one of the first FPSs which was really scary with those chain clinking wights...having to sneak around them while they moaned and clanked. The dinosaurs were awesome too...the best fun I had shooting broadheads. Thief 2 was a great game too...awesome story and gameplay.
But, god I hope Thi4f is nothing like Thief 3...that had very little that was truly fun, well the rooftop action was cool, and there was a bit of a scary section in the hospital. But, reloading every 2 minutes was a joke. I've got an Intel i7 965 with 6GB of RAM, a 1GB nVidia GTX285 OC, Fatal1ty Titanium, a 64GB solid state drive, and Windows Vista Business 64-bit. I can probably load up the entire game in 15 seconds. Sure, it's not what everyone else has, but please don't make it a fixed architecture.

I wonder if Eidos is a bit surprised at how many of us are already all over this forum?
I don't think they are surprised. I do however wonder if they fully realize what they are getting themselves into and the fanatical devotion some of us have for the classic Thief Games and Garrett.

Thief fan from Tacoma, Washington here.
I'm glad to see that Eidos is working on a new episode of for the series. From what I've read the team is not going to include anyone from Looking Glass. I'm not sure that's in the best interest of the project. Whatever happens, I think that we need to get back to the "feel" that the game had in Thief I and II. We should also stick with high quality animations for the cutscenes. They age better than the CG stuff.

We should also stick with high quality animations for the cutscenes. They age better than the CG stuff.
True. Though I'm sure they will be using motion capture for the animations, so it should turn out good.

I don't think they are surprised. I do however wonder if they fully realize what they are getting themselves into and the fanatical devotion some of us have for the classic Thief Games and Garrett.
I am sure they've learned a lesson or two about fanatical devotion in the DX3-forums...

Hi. I'm a 22 year old hungarian taffer. I've been playing Thief for nine years now. The first two are the games that inspired me most as an artist - I'm actually a writer (published only short stories so far, first novel maybe next year) and a video game designer (currently working on my first game with experienced artist and programmers, casual garage-project stuff, should be done by this summer), so I'm really excited, what's next. I really want Thief 4 to go back to it's roots, so I'm gonna taff around here until that happens :)

I am delighted to hear the news that T4 is underway. Also it is good to see so many familiar faces and some new ones here.
Viktoria, you are doing a great job as a mod, and you seem to be quite in tune with Thief and what it should be.
This has been said before, but I hope that the T4 team can play a lot of the great T2 Fan Missions and come to appreciate what we mean by back to the basics.

I'm a graphic artist/writer, and a huge fan of the series. :) ..... well, not a HUGE fan of TDS. But that's why we're all here. To help you make this game what it SHOULD be. ;)
Just a question though... how exactly do the mods and devs sort through all the threads and suggestions and discussion therein? Do you read every single post? Because having been to the Blizzard (WoW) forums, you can understand that some people may get the idea that they are not being heard. O_o
... not that I'm accusing or anything. We just don't want our suggestions to fall on deaf ears. ^_^ If I can help you guys in the creative process in any way, I'm here. And I fully intend to play through the series again to get some material for you.
In fact, I'm such a fan of the series that I built a whole new computer out of decade-old parts just so I could play 1 and 2 again! :D

Names Hypevosa, or Hype for short. I was a fan of the thief games since I first saw the styalized text title on the side of the box at an EB games. I liked the way it looked, and the thought of being a thief sounded like fun... so I gave it a go. I loved it, the intricacy, the stealth, the *thunk* "uughhhh..." It was an awesome came. Then thief 2 came out, and the metal age wasn't disappointing either. So the graphics weren't top notch? the art, the story, the gameplay was all awesome. I got deadly shadows for PC, and it wasn't as good as the other games, but it was cool nonetheless. If you look at my avatar, it's a bastardization of the symbol in the Woodsie Lord's forehead, and I've used it as a symbol for a long time.
And so I'm here, because I want to be a part of making this game great :D

Greetings, my fellow taffers, it's Klára from Hungary!
Reading all these posts make me feel bad about never being involved in the online Thief community, but I guess the announcement of Thief 4 is a good opportunity to join in the fun. Welcome another regular TTLG lurker on stage! :D
Everything began around 2000 with the Thief 2 demo... I couldn't believe a game level could be so vast, complex, full of secrets, so ALIVE. I fell in love with the City and its amusing inhabitants, with the atmosphere, and with the mysterious and witty master thief, not to mention the brilliant voice acting. It was perfect in every possible way and you could really feel the devotedness of the Looking Glass staff. Ever since then I've played Thief 1-2 so many times that I stopped counting after a while, it just became a habit, an addiction. Deadly Shadows also had its good points, but it was pale in comparison to its memorable ancestors.
I've come to this tavern for the same reason as most of you taffers have; to take part in the creation of another legend. : )
Good luck with the making of Thi4f (lolz, still looks so weird) and feel free to depend a lot on our tips and ideas! :D

A special welcome to all the Hungarian taffers!
But of course I'm happy for everybody else too, here is a little surprise to prove it: :flowers: :D
I've introduced myself in the DX3 forums but I guess I should say some stuff here too, because I'll spend a lot of time on these boards as well. So, I'm a 25 years old guy from Hungary, from a small town near the Hortobágy. I work the night shift for an online company and write news articles for PC Guru Online (like the Thief 4 announcement :)). I fell in love with the Thief games when the T2 demo came out, I loved it and played with it for many hours. But I have to admit I first met this legendary series when I was a bit younger, just really starting gaming with my first PC (yeah, I joined the club a bit late, didn't have the money before) and I'm ashamed to admit it but I found T1 boring and dumb at that time. I've only played with games like Doom, Shadow Warrior and Blood before, so I didn't know a lot about what gaming can offer. I installed Carmageddon 2 instead. :o :D But after some time I opened my eyes and saw that there's more to gaming then just shooting and blowing stuff up. And after Thief 2 I got DX1, T1, T Gold and started looking at other genres too, like RPGs, RTSs and so on.
So yes, Thief was a big influence in my life too. Thank you Looking Glass and Ion Storm!
Sorry, I didn't want to write such a long post. :D

Hi, I´m 22 and student of physics and philosophy.
The Thief games inspired me in so many ways (hehe not in the way you may think :p)
...through them I got interested in architecture/art history and even did some concept art.
I even think that the games brought me to philosophy because concepts like order and chaos, the ultimate failure of a single (narrow) worldview are major themes in the storyline.
In my opinion the DS plot finished this idea perfectly -the very philosophy of balance (of the keepers) failed because ultimately it was as narrow minded as the other two itself, while in the end Garrett brought balance by acting without suppporting any philosophy but with pure common sense.
Haha I´ve studied so many philosophy books (east and west) just to find out that computer games I´ve played years ago are containing a bit of the ultimate truth ;)

Hey! My name's Kaelyn and I'm glad to join you guys. Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I've been able to relive Thief 1 & 2, but I must say, they definitely opened my eyes to a new gaming experience, particularly Thief 2. I also legitimately enjoyed TDS, despite its flaws.
Because of my financial difficulties I will probably not be able to play Thief 4 until it is already a rather old game, because I am unable to purchase a PC (I have a Mac laptop through my school--hey, it works well for composing!) However, I still want to see it be as great a game as it can be, so I'm happy to offer my suggestions, for what they're worth! Don't listen to the cynics--we as a community are thrilled to learn that there's going to be a Thief 4, and we're excited about the possibilities. I think with a franchise like this it is absolutely essential to listen to the fans, so I hope you take in all of our suggestions! Thanks a lot!

How rude of me to not introduce myself and I'm already at my 24th post exluding this one.
Greetings fellow taffers.
I'm 26 and I'm from Malaysia. That's the country above Singapore and yes, we do speak English.
Started with TMA meself. It was love at first sight. But seeing as how I started with the sequel I was a bit lost at the time.
I was working as a waiter in 2000 after my O-levels when I met a fellow taffer/waiter. That guy was totally in love with TDP and haven't played TMA yet and I just finished TMA and was looking to get TDP.
We ended up trading our discs and when the restaurant went bankrupt 9 months later, we stopped contacting each other. Neither of us bothered to call to get back our games. I guess the pain of seeing each other again would have too much or somethin. I dunno.
I must be going against the trend here when I say I enjoyed TDP more than TMA. The Trickster thing really spooked me honestly. The Industrial thing in TMA while not bad just wasn't as scary. Plus, TDP had the very, very hot Viktoria. Hubba, hubba.
Oh, you guys remember going through those caves with them Burricks around? It was the scariest sh*t ever. I remember holding my breath when I was walking past a herd of them, listening to their heavy breathing, praying that they won't hear me. That is how you make a game people!
And people wonder why we love TDP and TMA so much.

Hello all,
I'm a 22 year old from Houston, TX.
I'm a long-time thief player, and a long-time Eidos/TTLG forum lurker. If you've seen me around, it's been me asking how to jerry-rig TG onto my computer or to tweak TDS so that I can actually play it. My brother introduced me to TMA when I was 10, and I loved it, even though I was awful at the playing style. Thief got me started on stealth-based gaming and I've never looked back! Here's hoping the new game lives up to its predecessors.

I almost bought on Ebay 2 years, an in store stand up window display for T2. The guy only wanted $60.00 for it. He got the shipping wrong, it would of cost about the same to ship it. He offered a refund since the shipping was wrong, I took it. I had to move and no room for it. Bit of a bummer, but, oh well.

To be honest? I think Metroid has the best fanbase. Most of them, in my experience, are very reserved, and a lot of them critical thinkers. The MOTHER fanbase is up there, but they tend to overhype things.
Haven't had enough experience to look at Thief's fanbase yet. Don't disappoint me! >_>

Huh, I wonder how I missed this thread.
Hiya, names Master Taffer, real name is Nate. Been playing Thief since the Dark Project was released in 1998 and have been a Thief enthusiast since day one (I hate the term "Fan" and associate it with bickering and complaining people who are arrogant never satisfied with anything.) I've already been enjoying some civil conversation around here, and look forward to more.

Hi to all.
I am new to the THEIF forum, although I have been using the Arkham Asylum site.
I was wondering if anyone could help/explain a little about the Thief games. I am 360 owner and understanding that this will be the 4th (obviously) game of the series. Having not followed much of the other 3 games. Just wanted a little basic knowledge of the series.
I have researched a little online myself and would like to get into this forum to start discussing the 4th game.
Any help appreciated
Thanks

Well hello there. I'm Maeglin Lightfoot. Some older taffers may remember me from my days over at TTLG as "deadman." Imagine my surprise when I type "thief 4" out of mock boredom in the address bar today and get redirected to this site ;) I'm a 26 year old junior going to UCD (Denver) seeking a BFA in 3D animation; let's just say the atmosphere of Thief was a huge influence in that decision. Don't know how active I'll be here, especially once the fall semester starts up again, but here's hoping for a sequel worthy of the Thief franchise! (among other things, this means no botched dynamic lighting engines ala "Deadly Shadows" to screw things up)
Cheers!

Hey everyone :)
I've been a thief fan since launch day of TDP back in what... 1998 or so?
After playing through the Bafford's Manor demo about 25 times I had to have the game, and there it came into my life forever :)
The news that T4 was going to be in production was absolutely brilliant for me - it's my favourite series of all time and I really hope that everyone here as a community alongside the developers can make this a fantastic game.
I'm a big ps3 gamer at the moment, not much to do in the world of PC gaming, only when I can't boot the missus off the tv when she's watching soaps and other rubbish lol

Hey all you Taffers!! Its great to be apart of the community especially one that is as dedicated to game as this one. Wow thief 4 thats the best news ive heard in a while. I started gaming at an early age thanks to my uncle. TDP was one of the first games i was introduced to. I was hooked from the second I started hiding from guards and running away from zombies (while having a heart attack to i might add). I believe that if the thief team get it right (which they certainly could) thief 4 would go down as one of the greatest stealth games of its time. Thief 4 has an unlimited amount of potencial and I (as well as the rest of the Taffers) will be handing in the best ideas we can think of specially for thief team. (",). From this day forth I dedicate myself to coming up with any ideas that might help or be usefull in any way no matter how small. Good luck thief team and all the best our hopes rest with you

What if thief 4 was like the new friday the 13th?Not saying you would be at camp crystal lake fighting jason or anything but the way they did the remake. They made friday the 13th part 1,2,and 3 into one movie. How cool would it be to go threw all three thief games with the graphics and game engines we have today? Not saying they would all three be the same as the first but they would follow the same story lines, tweaking here and there, revamping the old levels and trying to slim down all those great levels into maybe 16 30 min missions or maybe 6-8 1 hour missons. That to me would be something I could see playing over and over again.
Chopping up the levels into bite-sized chunks, to make them TDS city section sized?
kinda like the new friday the 13th,the first 30 min were the fisrt one,the next 30 mins were the 2nd and the last hour was part 3.you could have 3 or 4 missions getting into the eye and all that goodness, the next few missions about the metal age,and the the last few missions wrap it all up,chop the whole series into bite size little pieces and put it back together.Honestly i just think theif would be so much better if it was redone with todays tech.

Woohoo! Thief is undoubtebly the best stealth 1st/3rd-person series ever made - in the last week I have replayed Thief II: The Metal Age and Theif III: Deadly Shadows! Legends both! However I must agree with many that Thief-DS was a disappointment in comparison to the brilliance of its fore-runners. I have to say that Thief II is my absolute favourite.

Hi everyone.
I just heard about a forum for Thief 4, so I decided to come and look at it. Turns out it's been here a while.
I'm a long-time fan of the series, especially the first two games. I've been playing Thief ever since it came out (when I was 6), and I have to say, it's a great game.
My only concern is whether or not the original Dromed, Dark Engine programs will be used in this game (it would please the fans and boost the sales if they are).
If the fans want the old-fashioned Thief 1 and 2 game style for Thief 4, hey, why not go for it?
Well, it's not going to use LGS's Dark Engine or Siege Engine (super DromEd's super engine), and not even the Flesh Engine. It looks like the are using Crystal Dynamics' software because that's where technology is right now, and what Eidos has been using.

Hey all.
Having just remembered the heroic exploits of my old Blood Bowl team, Ion Storm (http://www.fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=team&op=view&team_id=106788), I made a new one for this forum (http://www.fumbbl.com/FUMBBL.php?page=team&op=view&showmatches=1&team_id=577475). If you're not yet in the team and you whine enough, I'll add you when I get some more money (later players will be more glamorous, so it's best not to be in at the start!) Hopefully I can match the strong performance of Ion Storm.
Our first game went OK, I think I was a bit unlucky not to win, but we didn't lose and we covered the pitch in blood, nobody was injuried, and we won quite a lot of money, so it's an acceptable start.

Where's that keg of the good stuff. The GANG'S ALL HERE! well, almost. Some of 'em fell by the wayside, so lift your firkin for "Gumdrop", "rickNmel", "Munin the Raven", and others of the dearly departed.
*Opens up the sewer cover and slides out* Well, at least one of us isn't departed yet... :D I think I'll be here even after I'm dead... probably haunt the place. "Join us, join us NOW!" Whoops, did I say that?
I hope you don't mind, may I show this? Who here has one? ;) This is my hat. I would wear it, I look like a total dork and thug when I put it on. I've got the same games, same trapezoid boxes. Strictly Thief speaking that is.

I, too, still have one of those hats... I can't remember who the mod was that gave those out, (I think it was Peter Smith?) but I received it as well. It's taffing about the house somewhere, I'll have to find it again.
Oh, while I'm at it... found this old sign down in the sewers. Thought it could be returned to it's rightful place.

As a popular Thief fan will tell you 2 things that made this game popular in the past, and what most of players expect in this one:
1. Horror!
2. Control of the premises you have broken in.
ps: dont make monsters to hide from. Humans are most harmful.
johnny.smith5@yahoo.com
Thief horror without monsters? If they scare you, the game is working, if you think it's out of place, that's another kind of problem. :p

Depends on the monster... the haunts, when I first saw them, scared the daylights out of me. Ditto for the zombies, even the burricks. Immersion in the setting creates fear, not the critters. I find humans less scary than the haunts... not knowing what you're up against is a big component of that.
Squid
Tell that to the arachnophobes, and those who have expressed fear of the other critters of that world, otherwise, you are mostly correct. I placed "Thief" and "horror" next to each other because the elements used to actually threaten the player character are that fantasy world's flora and fauna and undead, as well as the plain humans. Any other fears come from the imagination, ambient sounds, or terrain. Tension and dread can be devoid of horror. Regardless of how individuals feel about any beasties, I want to see that world made whole again.

Hello! I'm new but I didn't see this thread until now!
So just thought I'd introduce myself.
I'm from South Africa and was introduced to Thief about 4-5 years ago (can't even remember!). My boyfriend was playing it at the time, and me not being a FPS kind of gal, would watch him play.
He was playing TMA at the time, and I was utterly and completely drawn into the game. I'd never had an urge to play a game as badly as this one.
So when he had finished he loaned it to me to play and he never got it back :D
One or two years later I purchased TDP, then I bought TDS and eventually found Thief Gold.
This is my absolute FAVOURITE games series of all time. I cannot get enough of it even after playing it as many times as I have. It's AWESOME!
And I'm so happy to be here. SO HAI!!!

I was of the same view - to be happy playing fan missions until my last breath. But the announcement of a fourth title has given us renewed excitement for the future and, hopefully, will create a new era of fan missions thereafter. Goodsie times. :)

Hi there Tutterburg! Tell us about yourself, please.:)
I want to say hello. I've never been a part of a forum like this before, but as soon as I found out there was going to be another Thief, I couldn't resist. Being on the Internet a lot over the past ten years, I run into a lot of people that ask me if I'm into video games, and I usually just honestly say, "No...not really...I like Thief!"
I get mixed emotions when I find that no one really knows much about the games at all. But I don't mind much, because nothing has yet given me the thrill that the first two Thief games could. I have my own handful of unfinished DromEd experiments and I've played many of the fan missions (so very happy for those). I am not so happy that I haven't figured out a way to play these games on Vista, so I'm a few years into my withdrawal here.
On a side note, why is the 4 in the place of the e? I'm sorry to pick at that, but I've always been bothered by numbers in place of letters in titles ever since SE7EN (sesevenen?). Doesn't the f look a little more like a 4? or ...something with the T? I don't know...it's not an e!! :P (sorry, I'm better now...)
You're not alone in many of those sentiments. Welcome!
There are a couple of threads dedicated to the dislike of the logo, with a dash of taffers who like it just fine.

Afternoon (well, it is here) having tired of a recent spurge I had of playing Sniper Elite; Prey; Doom3; and Nightfire again, I returned to the Deadly Shadows and felt good again, so I got wondering where the franchise was and sure enough, .....well, the fact I'm posting this says it all. (Yay !!)
One thing I'm doing more of this time around is climbing. I found (what I understood) the usual haunts the first time around but this time I'm finding other wee sneaky bits that a Taffer could secrete themselves during an honest night's thieving. Marvellous.
This is what I want more of. More climbing, more sneaky bits and definitely more rooftops. It bothers me that most roofs are railed or blocked off. With major buildings you should have guards on the roofs, so travelling this way could prove just as treacherous as ground level.
A few open windows and raised catwalks wouldn’t go amiss either, ….
("How d'ya get up there ?")

I just found out about the new game the other day and was incredibly excited owing to the fact that Thief is my favorite game franchise of all time. I hope they do this one justice! Woot! Thief 4!
I have been a fan of Thief since our old Gateway came with the first Thief. One of my favorite lines of the series is actually from the game manual for the first game. It said something like: "This is not like your typical first-person shooter. You are not an indestructible tank that can plow through hordes of baddies. If you get caught, you will die. That last line has always stuck with me and I hope to see more of the same for the fourth installment. I also hope they bring back rope arrows, swimming and Burriks.
There is no tiff taffin way I am going to miss this game!

Hello, 18 here from Portugal, I've been a big fan of the Thief series ever since I was a kid, when I played the demo for Thief 1.
At the moment, I'm replaying all 3 games on the hardest difficulty :) , get that "Thief feeling" back, and will probably play some FM's afterwards (I never really played many back when I was playing the series for the first time, played 1 or two, never really felt, idk, "genuine").
Anyway, great to see you all, hope to see T4 become the "crowning jewel" as Garrett would say :P on the Thief series.

Greets to all! I've been taffing since the early days of Space Invaders, 2600's, Pac-Man, & C-64's, so I pretty much just showed everyone my age...
I'm a moderator over at our excellent Gamepolitics forums, going by the name "Garrett". If any politician, news journalist, lawyers, ex-lawyers, 'scientific' researcher, 'for-the-children' group, FOX NEWS events on video games, or any other outlet, media or otherwise, decides that Thief 4 is a burden to society and should be banned, you're damn skippy it'll be covered at GP! And I'll be sure to let you all know.
The Thief series has been a favorite of mine (right up there with the Fallouts, the Metal Gears, and strange ones like the Deception series from Tecmo) for years. Long have I gone into the nights, refining techniques and making the game harder with "no kills, no stealing from the poor, no animal abuse, & no victim abuse "
I'm tickled p-less by the thought that T4 is, if not around the corner, somewhere down the block to the right, in the alley and downstairs in some strange dark basement. Of course, if you stop a typical 17-21 year old on the street and ask "QUICK! What does T4 stand for?!" they will absolutely say something about robots, the future or something batty.
A big hug and a couple of water arrows to those that have spent time making some great fan-based missions over the years!

Been here a couple weeks, figured I'd better introduce myself. I've been a Thief fan since the beginning, but just recently played my first fan mission. I prefer The Dark Project and The Metal Age to Deadly Shadows, but I still enjoy Deadly Shadows and think it has a lot going for it. My style of play is usually sandman with semi-frequent ironman elements, although I sometimes save at what I consider to be the midpoints of missions. If that style of play doesn't have a name, I'd like to call it tinman. I also enjoy ghosting and am trying to improve in that area. Great to be a part of this wonderful community of Thief fans!

“Where there is much light, the shadow is deep” - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
TDS was my first experience into Thief's amazingly dark world. After playing it through dozens of times, I purchased 'Thief II: The Metal Age' and I have been swept off my feet in a way very few games have done, it is by far a masterpiece.
I have been reading an occusional thread here and there, and I found it to my surprise that some refer to TDS as a 'disaster?' I'll look around to find an explanation, but it's one of my most favorite games of all times.
I live in San Diego, and currently attending college. I don't contribute much online, but the Thief's series is defintely something I would like to discuss with other like-minded individuals.
My favorite quote from Garret: "I've always equated "feelings" with "getting caught"...they both get in the way of my money. Unfortunately not everyone is as committed to their work as I am."
Rather long introduction, but cheers!

Thief DS was my first experience in the games too, and I really enjoyed it it. I rented it first, then didn't get around to finding it to buy until about a year or two later. And about a year after that I found the first and second.
I still like the third one, but in comparison of the other two, I don't feel it as as good of a game as I first thought.
But it wasn't in the intention for the game to end up how it did, so I give it a forgiving pat on the shoulder and still like it more than most games, and I don't blame the dev team for the unfortunate fate it and Deus Ex 2 had.
How's San Diego this time of year?
Bet it's warmer than here :P
Greetings fellow taffers!
I've checked back on this forum since summer when I first discovered it. Ohh my... I remember the day. I was at work at lunch break checking various gamesites when I stumbled upon the proclamation that Thief IV had been announced. The second later, "thief 4 forum" was googled.
I feelt that it's time to actually write something on my own and contribute to what occurs to me like an extremely active forum for a game which have just entered development. I've learn through www.thief-thecircle.com that the old fanbase is still active and I'm glad that many on this forum share the same views on what thief is about.
I've played TTDP, TMA, TDS in the same order as they are written. Also played the exellent unofficial expansion of thief 2, shadows of the metal age and installing cosas as I'm typing this.
cheers

Hello :D
Anton's the name and Thief recently became my game!
After visiting this years Eidos open house, and looking at some sweet old game boxes and the bit of Thief art that was around on my way to the Deus Ex crew, I realized that I have never played any of the Thief games. Did some research, realizing quickly who made them and that I'm missing out, I bought the Thief collection pack and am now proud to add it to my very small "classics" collection. I am currently really enjoying the first game :)

It's been less than 9 months, it will take at least 24 in total, but maybe 30. We're looking at roughly 15 to 21 months to go. That's more than a year, but less than two from today.

i'm aegis, I play lots of thief. I've just played The Dark Project (never bothered to get Gold) for the umpteenth time, currently about 3/4 through The Metal Age.
I just found out that "shadows of the metal age" exists, so I'll play that before I move onto Deadly Shadows. I consider myself good at Thief, but I suppose thats subjective. I'll be looking forward to the release of the 4 official installment, but from the looks of things that will be a long ways off
Just so you know, T2X is made by fans without the devs' inside knowledge of the trilogy. It's great stuff, though. Enjoy!

I know, and like most fan content, it shows (nobody ever seems to get the voice acting quite right)
just beat a mission in under 20 minutes. I think this will be a speedy process
Of course non-actors aren't going to nail the acting, and the official games have non-actors, too.

Cool, I hope you don't give up on T1 or T2 because they're older titles or because their levels are (thankfully) larger. It sounds like you're going to give them all a decent shot, though :thumb:
T2 has some nice improvements, graphically and gameplay-wise, over T1, imo ... so if you make it through and enjoy T1 you should have no problem with T2 (I hope). T2 is my personal fav of the three, but T2 is the first one of the series I played -- so maybe I'm biased. T1 had some great things about it, and T3 had some things I enjoyed.
I hope you install DDFIX if you're not seeing clouds in the sky or poor dithering/shading in T2. I also hope your cutscenes are working in T1/T2! The sepia-toned cutscenes are critical to getting into the "vibe" of T1/T2. They don't work on my computer unless I do this before launching T2: Windows Start > Run > type this into box: regsvr32 "D:\Program Files\Thief2\LGVID.AX" (modify this to whatever the path to your Thief 2 folder is).
I also hope going in reverse order doesn't ruin your T1/T2 experience or make you think T1/T2 should have certain things T3 has :)
Happy to see another Thief fan onboard. Sorry I went overboard with my talks about making the T1/T2 experience better. I just want you to be experiencing as much as intended. It's a bit selfish, really, as I just want more people liking T1/T2 the best! :)

But don't worry, everything is ok with thief 1 and 2, no problem at all. (i'm just stuck trying to find the haunted cathedral in the first one, but i will sort it out)
Even though i started playing thief 3 first, i was able to understand what was going on, i just didn't understand what happened to garrett's eye until i finished the game and searched for more information (spoilers, i know)

Don't go searching the web to see what levels it adds, or spoiling your experience. Just something to consider getting in the future if you're not burned out on Thief by then :). Has anyone noticed that this is mainly the only thread that we are nice to new taffers? They post here and think: "Wow, what a grear forum." And then they post their ideas and get Instant KO'ed and never returns.:rasp::lmao:
We're always nice to taffers that aren't expressing opinions other than how cool Thief is, how excited they are about a new Thief 4, making suggestions that are in the spirit of the game, happy to have registered, finally stopped lurking, and just saying "hello" all friendly-like, and so on. You know, not saying anything controversial or inflammatory or dangerously ignorant (save the taffer!), or disrespectin' anything that makes Thief great. :p
But really, the major difference is that the topic of this thread is friendly greetings and welcoming, while the other threads concern other things, even though greetings and welcoming are...welcome there.

You know what we need to tempt them in?
Screenshots, concept drawings or even just a smidgeon of news.
Otherwise it's just us sad sacks chasing our "tales".
I was browsing on the Just Cause 2 forum and what gives there?
There's dudes who've been registered for a couple of months with post counts over a 1000.
I know the game is out soon but they're on a posting frenzy over there.
Yeah, they're gettin' giddy. They also are quite into posting more outright silliness than anything serious, like last-second petitions for motorcycle backflips, and whatnot.
... I had a bad experience one time I went to an inn, the watch ambushed me, fortunately I had a few tricks up my sleeve and escaped
but I'm wary of inns these days....
guess where I'm up to in TMA ...... again :D
me an sammy are going to have "words" once I shake the watch

Well, Hello everyone glad to be here and finally see #4 is on its way. I have been a heavy gamer for 24 years or more and became a big fan from the first time i played the original thief game. I enjoyed thief two and was glad to see Deadly shadows . I must say i have missed the flare of the first two because they work on windows 98 and windows me but seem to create diffculty when attempting running them on windows xp in compatibility mode. Honestly i would love to see them re- done to work on windows xp or even released for the xbox360.
Pretty much enjoy every detail of the thief series from hiding in the shadows , to throwing landmines close to guards and then shooting a noisemaker arrow next to them so the guards come a lookin ha ha. I Hope there will be more than just #4 in the future and lots more arrows ,blackjacks, land mines to come.
Welcome...
You can get all of the THIEF games (TDP, TG, TMA, TDS) to run on XP, Vista, and 7. That being said, kindly refrain from advocating any THIEF game for the XBOX 360 or other console device...thanks in advance...:)

I've returned after many months of absence. The reason I was gone is because right after I went to this site, I found a trojan on my laptop. I originally thought that it was because of these forums, but that suspicion is now gone after a few Anti-virus scans.
Anyhow, I'm glad to be back.

Hi, taffers and tafferettes,
Slightly new to the site, long time Thief player. I first played TDP on my father's old computer in a storage room - not with torches, rats or spiders, undead or patrolling guards, though - and played all three Thief games since then, and a bunch of FM's - some of which are actually better than than the OM's.
New to the Tavern, though, I would like offer everyone a drink... Although it will have to be a pretty big drink so that everyone will be able to take a sip from the same mug o' ale.
Well, excuse me: If I had any gold for limitless drinks at the bar, I wouldn't be a thief ;) now would I? Please, don't hold this rant against me - dull day at work has made glowing mushroom salad of my poor brain... :nut:

Hello everybody :)
I've been playing Thief since the very first game years and years ago as a wee child. Am now still with it and hopeful for Thief 4.
Just thought I'd put it out there: who else believes that we need a support group for how hot the Hammerites are? Sometimes I'd like to feel normal when the prospect of a large medieval zaelot with an even larger... hammer is threatening to kill me.
Thank you and good night.

I've been a console gamer since the mid 80s (never played games on a PC). My introduction to the THIEF franchise was a $17 used copy of THIEF: DEADLY SHADOWS for the Xbox system. Due to it's stealth game-play, excellent feel of atmosphere, beautiful character and level design, color palate, sound, creepy music and funny AI, THIEF soon became one of my all-time favorite games. Can't wait for THIEF IV!
Hey everyone I have been a gamer for the past 9 years and I have to say in all my years of gaming I found that the thief series is one of the best game series ever.First purchased deadly shadows and then thief 2 in the same year, loved the innovative game play hope the upcoming one will live up to our expectations.
Here's hoping all our fellow taffers in, or from, South America, and their friends and loved ones, are safe and unharmed by the huge earthquake that struck Chile, and the tsunami that came from it and swept through the Pacific Ocean.

My friends son Is at University here in the UK. Spanish his Major. He only went to Chile two weeks ago to a Uni there for six months, which starts this week, he went early to settle in. Suburbs of Santiago he stays. So shaken by it all
It took until the night to get a message, though safe, there have been more tremors in Chile today over 7.
I do hope fellow taffers here and families and friends are all safe. No one is quite sure of the Tsunami that may follow, it seems to have by-passed Hawaii hopefully it will ebb and go.

Hay guys. Believe it or not I've been living under a rock with my computer and two Thief games. When I came back into the real world (or the internet...close enough) I realised that Thief four was in the making. After laughing a bit at the design of the logo I almost played Theif DS all the way through again with excitment. Almost.

My Old computer couldn't take the juice, and took about billion years to download a word document. I now have the marvelous windows 7 and can't wait to get started on fan missions, but I've vowed to play through The Metal Age all the way through first. (I'm on the last level right this second and am about to finish!) Where do you recommend I get fan missions from, any particular sites?
Right here there are fan missions for you (http://thief-thecircle.com/missions/)...:)
