View Full Version : How Computer Savvy are You?
It never ceases to amaze me how adept the youngsters are these days (Thanks, incidentally to My dog Max for my tech PM help! ;) ).
In "My day" computers ran off cassette tapes and were a mere after-school hobby
Many folk among my age group slipped through the loop, as it were, unless they went on to pursue additional training for Information Technology (IT) and the like.
These days, computers are an integral part of the educational agenda and ergo, us oldies are often left way behind and need our children to teach us!
I don't have any children but I do have an expert in the family but he's too busy to teach me and far too impatient since he (my beloved brother), seems to assume I know more than I really do! :o
I am in awe of folk who are trained in this field for it is vast. Goran Agar seems to be the "dog's" when it comes to computer savvy, as is resident security and friend, Ruum Taedor.
I was thinking of taking a training course but I don't want to start from scratch as I know SOME stuff but don't want to be bored with infantile and patronising tasks and to be seen as too adept for my classmates :rasp:
So, how good are we all on the computer?

Just Enough to get by. Though my Gramps was a Physicist and my Cousins, Uncles are Engineers, I'm playing catch-up.

I know enough HTML and CSS to get me around, still learning though.:)
It feels like I know the hard complicated things, but then I'm lost on the easy stuff that everyone knows! (But me) :nut: :nut: :nut: It's odd.:o  :o
And I in no way meant that as bragging. :o :o :o

I only know the basics:o . If someone tries to talk "Tech" to me, I look at them like they're speaking a foreign language:lol:

I know keyboard shortcuts (you know like CTRL + V and stuff...), some html, how to use the Microsoft office programs and how to install things, etc; but somehow this makes me a super computer nerd/expert in our house!
If I do need to fix anything, I just guess half the time and experiment with things; and it seems to work!

I suppose in my house i'm the computer nerd, built my own for gaming and that means i know everything according to the rest of the family.
Inevitably though when asked to fix something i say 'have you tried turning it off and on again' and if that fails it's time for a google.
Hehe you guys, too funny! :p
Oh my, I couldn't resist this quick clip for you guys! :D

I'm computer savvy enough to know there's a lot of interesting stuff I don't know.

I know everything what's inside of the computer, what parts to touch and change without destroying the whole thing. I know all of the shortcuts on the keyboard, BB code and some HTML.
Know what, I got to thinking that maybe we could have a little thread going (Maybe RG could start one at some stage?), about PC help and so on, unless one already exists?
I for one could use some random tips. I feel people of my generation would really benefit from a few tips without having to embarrass themselves by asking!
I know a few tricks myself but I'm constantly amazed at the youngsters and how adept they are at PC know-how! :o

You need to give this guy a call, might need to have watched it to get it but hey. I think it's funny.

I only know just enough to know the basics and tell when a computer doesn't have enough memory and if it is fast or not. like mine I know that 1.6 Ghz isn't fast not fast at all.

For application tips and know how (MS and Mac) try www.jefflevy.com He is great and has a large number of tips for "using" the computer. The internals are another issue.
But mainly mechanics. Plug this... in there.
I know enough to build a system and load operating systems and applications. I know absolutely no programing except for BASIC, which I used to do in the 70's and a little dBase.
My first computer was the only one that came with a operating system, and some apps.
The MAGNIFICENT, 64K RAM, TRS-80 with Cassette interface, 20 MB HDD and 3" floppy.

Depends which area of "computers" you mean.
But as rg_001100 said, I know enough to know there's a lot I don't know.
Nice one TBM!
By the way mate, can I interest you in a new LCD HD ready DVD?

This :)
And I can change a few things inside the computer, like cards, CPU, fans and stuff like that.
Oh, and once I bought a case, motherboard, CPU + cooler, harddrive and some cards and built one myself (and it's still running fine!) :D

Customer: Ahh...I need help unpacking my new PC.
Tech: What exactly is the problem?
Customer: I can’t open the box.
Tech: Well, I’d remove the tape holding the box closed and go from there.
Customer: Ahhhh...ok, thanks....
Customer: How long is the 14 foot Ethernet cable?
Tech: What does the screen say now?
Customer: It says, “Hit Enter when ready”.
Tech: Well?
Customer: How do I know when it’s ready?
How do you spell HTML??
