View Full Version : Which level/place in TRU freaked you out the most? *spoilers inside, of course*

Personally, I think TRU wasn't very 'scary', but I must admit it is a BIG improvement compared to TRL and TRA.
For me, the big hall with the swinging hammers was the freakiest place in the game....... Just the idea of a bottomless pit combined with balancing on small ledges and collapsing bridges...make one mistake and you fall in the endless depth for all eternity....falling for ever and ever........
It kinda freaked me out a bit, especially when one of those crabspiders showed up!
There was one part in that level where you head for a secret and go through this very narrow and very dark tunnel......quite scary too
Also, there is this tunnel in the Croft Manor, where you find the Relic. It was so quiet in there, but suddenly I heard someone breathing.......It scared the heck out of me because I had read a title of a thread (some days before that) which said something like "The Croft Manor, those creatures", so I thought there were mutated creatures at the other side of the rocks in the tunnel. Of course, eventually that wasn't the case, so I figured it was Lara herself who was breathing!  :nut:
That's about it, the part in the Arctic Sea level where all those Thralls attack you was very exciting, but not scary. I somehow felt invincible with Thor's Hammer  :D :worship:
So how about you guys?

I agree with you on all that but i also found the avalon (the bit after natla helps you open the door to avalon) level a bit scary. It seemed like a never ending tunnels full of thralls :nut:

@Buffbabe: Yeah I know, but that part was so cool because Lara could knock em all out like that with the 'hammah'. :D
@Serendipity: I totally forgot about that part, yeah I jumped off my chair as well when that happened. And later in the level, I accidentally fell into the Kraken pool.........you have no clue how fast I got back (to safety  :nut: ) on a ledge!

So have you finished? :D
My favourite level must be the Mediterreanen level, the huge ocean, that scary sharks and that Kraken  And the part with the ship (the music in there is just the coolest one :D)is awesome. And yes, I accidentaly jumped to its pool and quickly got back to a safe ledge, even when it was dead :o.
Of course I like Croft Manor, the tunnel under it is just amazing, and when it is burning, there are the most epic cutscenes ever :nut: Specially the red hair doppelganger and her braid :thumb:

Well I had my suspicions of course, I knew she would be in the game and I have always believed she would never come home with Lara (because that would be way to cheesy of an ending), but I had no idea she looked like that!
I figured it out when I saw her standing like that, so.... not human, so....thrall-like.

i was just in the BIGGEST jumpy mood when i played it!
i jumped when the kraken's tentaclebolted into that hole! even though i knew it was going to happen but i didn't know when (i almost screamed)
but i almost had a heart attack in mexico, you know the first little ruin that you come accross with the jaguar head in it, well when you get to the upper room to get out and the jaguar growl sound is triggered....... i've never pulled her guns out so quick:eek:
then i got out and went into a corner to pick up a treasure and the big cat comes up behind me quick as lightning i was like "ARGH FRIGGEN FLNCISBGFN DIE DIE DIE!!!!":nut: .........that was the scariest bit for me:)

Yeah. The jaguar growling scared me so bad i started shooting at nothing lol. I tried to look in the room beside the one your in to see if it was in there but didnt see it.
The level that scared me the most was the Arctic Sea. It was pretty spooky swimming down there:eek: . So open and blue. Oh and those big fish that bite you scared me every time. They are way more agressive than the sharks and are hard to kill since they swim away and move too fast. ARRRGG they are so annoying lol.

I didnt find the game very scary personaly. The first time i played TRA i was like shaking the entire time, but now im older i gues, but i loved that scared feeling... o well.
But there was one time were i like nearly wet my self. it was in Croftmanor, (the scariest level IMO) and i was walking through one of those dark hallways, and out of nowhere one of those tinny spider jumped on my head!!! i was so freaked out. Even though all you have to do is stomp on them, and they die, it still scared me half to death!! there was one other time that i got scared. it was in thailand, when i got to the end of a tunnel and a tiger pounced on me. but that wasn't realy that scary either
p.s. oh and i love the updated smilies!!! :group_hug:

Actually I deliberately jumped into the Kraken pool (I was curious whether it was going to eat me haha) and nothing happened - I was swimming everywhere around the Kraken, I even got two treasures from the bottom. That was in the beginning, when I started to go around and put that mechanism together it suddenly got angry and smashed me with a tantacle whenever it saw me...:hmm:

Cute:p. Whenever I replay Tomb Of Tihocan in TRA I always dive into the pool where the Crocs are because it's the quickest way down. Then you have to swim like crazy to get out on a ledge.
As for being scared or jumpy in TRU, I don't think I was. For TRA I was quite unsettled whenever a Croc or Ape was around, I really hated those apes. The enemies in TRU were just cool, not really scary. Although there's always the odd enemy that you didn't know was around and attacks you from behind which kinda makes me jump haha :p

I was most scared of the mediterrean sea level... because 1. i can´t stand water in games... don´t know why^^ Everytime I see a pool in a game I think "oh no... Is there any way I can get around it??" ^^ and 2. I really HATE (!!) Krakens. They make me so scared. And then CD made a giant one in the game... I was so angry at them!:rasp:
When I started the game and thougt, great, my favourite level (haha...^^) is the first, my hands were chattering and I had to watch a video walkthrough at everytime the kraken acts to know what happens and what I had to do, cause otherwise I couldn´t have played it! :D:D I was SO happy as I killed this creature^^ But when I saw that it was still (although dead but still there!^^) down in the pool I didn´t even looked for the artifacts in the pool :p
I also don´t like the beginning of the Arctic sea level. Just water everywhere, ice above you and no way to get on land. That made me really crazy...

I got scared in the Xibalba level, when you're heading to the room with the four antechambers and you have to use mechanisms to pull up ramps to get over gaps. I didn't know that spiders would come up from those gaps, so I just kept going as usual. Then I got off the bike and I heard a strange noise, and then a spider jumped at me from behind! I screamed out loud because I was totally not expecting it. There was also a time in Thailand when a tiger jumped out from behind a bush and that kinda freaked me out.
I also agree with Love2Raid that the Valhalla chamber with the hammers was really scary. Lara is fearless to the point of absolute insanity sometimes! :rasp:

I jumped in the cutscene with Lara and Natla [Medditarean] (With Natla in the tube).
Lara says something I can't remember
Natla: I will tell you .. One day (You can't see natla anymore just part of the tube and Lara)... And when that day comes *slams hands on the glass*
That was pretty freaky XD.
Is it just me or in the cutscene does Natla rub her boobs against the glass? :naughty:

Oh yes, the first encounter with the crabspiders..............
I just immediately jumped on my bike and drove like crazy until I got to the main hall to find...........well, more crabspiders!
But in that big chamber it wasn't a problem because there was enough room to jump around etc, and oh right, I killed a lot of them with the bike
I suddenly remember something extremely funny! Remember the room with the moving walls (the trap)? After you get the tablet and are on your way back, one of those spiders comes from the entrance right at you, but...........it gets squished between the walls!!!  :rasp:
Same for one of the small rooms in the Valhalla swinging hammers hall, one of the spiders got squished under one of those two 'weights' that go up and down (right after I turned the mechanism on by pulling away a block)!!
EPIC LOL
@ William Croft: Really?
I will watch that cutscene again then............
First time those spiders attacked me in Mexico, kinda freaked me out. I had just raised the bridge and was hanging on the wall when I heard something approaching. While on the wall I had Lara draw her gun and she aimed at what I couldn't see. So I began shooting until the noise of those things stopped and Lara quit aiming her gum. I jumped off the wall and landed right on them. One of them squealed  and I screemed and dropped the controller. :nut:
The whole time I had not seen what she was shooting at until I jumped into the dead pile of them.
God made spiders to remind men that we're just a bunch of chickens. :p
Other somewhat spooky moment was when you encounter the first really big thrall and your in that little room. I freaked out and threw a grenade. Blew the silly thing up.

In mexico, when you get down to the lower area in Xibalba (I think it is)... the "trap" rooms were pretty scary, for me anyway, the one with the spears and blades.
The one with no obstacles (not on my version, anyway. When you get back into the Xibalba puzzle room, there're a whole bunch of spiders, but that's it) was filled with tension. I was expecting a massive ambush at any moment.

Overall, game was not scary, but...
When kraken moves it's tentacle the first time, freaked me out!! I was playing the game somewhere around half past midnight, in a dark room, tired and all. It poped out, and I screamed! Like, my dad viewing tests (he's a math teacher). Mum is sleeping. Total silence... And in one second, you just hear :" Aaarrrgghhh!! Jesus Christ, what the fu** was that?!?!"
And I woke up my mother...
BTW, How did kraken get it's tentacle that far? And through the closed door, that are only opened by intelligent mechanism???

That's just one of TRU's mysteries. :)
The tentacle was a quite a surprise for me as well, just like the lizard in Thailand that crawls on the wall right after you enter Bhogavati and the attacks of the giant sharks/whales in the Arctic.

I had just about the same experience as Resy. I had a friend over, and Lara had just landed on the thing that made the bridges raise. We heard the squealing noise and I just assumed that it was small spiders so I just let Lara shoot. I eventually just put the guns away--figuring that they were dead...but no. This big spider...jumps right above Lara and lands on the ledge just above...I was so freaked out.
I definitely hated the spiders the most.
Like in the hall of the swinging hammers...and that one came crawling on the wall...scared me so bad.
I kinda enjoyed the thralls...you basically just had to keep kicking them. Then I started to do that with the spiders and it seems to work pretty well. The yeti thrall is pretty intimidating...
I'm not done yet, but I can imagine that the last level will freak me out a bit...

TR:A was scarier but there were moments when I jumped.
I'm kinda scared of spiders:whistle: and I heard one coming up behind me but I didn't know what it was. I turned around with my guns out to see it flying at me after a jump. They made freaky sounds as well.
I also jumped when a lizard attacked me on the wall, I didn't realise they could climb after you (good idea don't you think).
But the CD games aren't nearly as scary as cores games. I guess I was young when I first played TR:4 but I couldn't play alone! When you had to climb down into a pit I'd jump down to see if anything whould attack my dead body, or I'd run into rooms with my eyes closed.:p

I played the PS2 version, and Im no expert raider, so I allways get scared when something attacks me. There was a part (In jan mayan island, i think) where u have to go around a spiral thing to get to valgrind. I was driving and suddinly a thrall came and i kinda, well, fell off the edge....croftcakes.... The next time i tryed, i got in trouble with my mum for screeming "HOW BOUT' THAT?!?!?!?!" when I let loose my machine gun...:)

The level which freaked me out most was the level of Jan Mayan Island. First off, you have to ride down a deep bridge thingy, and run over those Viking thralls. and when you’re done with that you have to open the damn door! Which was a terrific thing to do but I’m deeply afraid of heights. I fell off every floor haha.
But that level when you were inside, and you had to go through those hammers and such, those spiders freaked me out, I even remember calling my dad to see it, just because I chickened out and I didn’t wanted to do it alone. My father also got scared as hell when he saw those jumpy spiders flying across the room, haha. (Now who’s going to save me when I see a huge spider in my room huh!)
But can you remember that cut scene, when the thrall-yeti awakes? When I saw it growling at me I almost cried, and called my dad again, but he didn’t come! The reason why it freaked me out so much was because you don’t have any hammer to hit it with, you have to do it with on your own strength/guns and kill it. Thank god for grenades.
I also was quite shocked of that part where you have to go through the room where Natla performs that ritual of Odin to open the door to Avalon. You have to think of so many things at a time; you have to balance a pole, you have to kill several thralls and you have to watch out where you’re going or else you’ll jump into some Eitr!
Nerve breaking, yet I had such a big adrenaline rush after that!

100% agree with you there, i thought excactly the same when i jumped around there. You could really feel how dangerous the balance challanges were there, climbing around there with cold hands - barely able to maintain grip, one mistake and you are history. Imo the layout of the path you had to climb along was really well done, for instance you need to drop down above the endless pit and climb along, i could really feel the tension in this part of the game.
What i also remember, the part in Thailand, if i remember correctly, where you climb around the stone building which hangs over the pit with the mirrorfigures, 200 metres above the ground. I thought how would that be, if i climb that in reallife ^^

The water parts. Oh, the water parts...
I am deathly afraid of drowning, getting eaten, and deep, dark water. TR:U managed to combine all of those things into the beginning of the Mediterranean level and the beginning of the last level. In the Thailand level where you're trying to get the door open and swim back out to your boat, I kept hearing strange noises (just water sloshing around, I think ;)), and I thought something was in that little pool. :lmao: Scared me half to death.
The kraken, too, was scary, especially when I fell into the pool by accident... :o

I think the scariest part for me would be in that giant room with the swinging hammers and you had to ride the hammers around. It was all pretty fun, but then that supposedly-dead snow yeti thrall woke up so I immediately ran out and jumped across a gap and thought I could I could happily stand there and point and shoot...
...it decided to follow me >_>

I think that Tomb Raider II for the PS1 honestly had some jumping moments in the game. I've played the game dozen of times over and over and I still jump at some parts.
They even have nice sound effects in TR2 that are perfect for building suspense. Heartbeat sound effects, low toned creepy sound effects, and they do a good job at putting you in the dark with the sound effects and a pack of flares with a creature or two to kill, that jump out at you.
So I'd have to say TR2 for me.

No where is the short answer, none of CD's games have been able to match up to the feeling or eerieness or fear that were in the earlier games such as the floating islands, catacombs of the talion and the black isle from TRC that I still feel even now!

I am tottaly with Mr Croft on this one. Some of the levels in TR2. Yeti's in Kingdom and catacombs of the tailion and men with sticks and flamethrowers on the Deck scared me most. The music, darkness and enemy sounds worked well. Havn't really be scared that much by anything in CD's games yet. Nothing really in TRU but if I had to say one probably Kracken or Naga.
