View Full Version : Level 7 frustration

Hi everyone

I'm in Level 7 (Midas) on PS2 and am going for the first lead bar. There's that series of jumps from pillar to pillar across the room. I've tried around 65-70 times over the last week (not joking) and have gone through various stages of frustration, anger and unrestrained sobbing. Most of the time Lara doesn't grab the second spiked pillar and just falls flat in front of it, for example. It's not that I'm new to TR... I've played every single previous TR game on either PC or PS and I've never experienced anything like this! This is my first time on PS2, however. I'm so frustrated and am thinking of selling the PS2 and Lara with it, simply because I can't move on. I know it's important to really set up the jumps carefully. Can anyone give me some advice? Or has anyone had the same experience with this bit on PS2? Knowing I'm not alone and completely stupid would help a bit! Ally:confused:

Have you got auto grab on or off? Try turning it ON. This may help in Lara making that grab. Another thing you can try is to switch off full screen effects. Some players have found that this helps too for grabbing ledges they couldn't before.

Hope this help, keep trying and good luck. :)

Thanks for your advice! I'll give everything a try. I don't really want to sell Lara... Ally

I always find it odd how people have trouble making jumps in Crystal's games. I find the control scheme so easy and managable. Sorry I can't help. :p

It's not always the gamer's inability to make the jumps as such but sometimes there is a glitch in-game that can make seemingly 'doable' leaps difficult simply because Lara won't grab a ledge. I haven't experienced this much, but if you have full screen effects on, it happens sometimes. Dunno why though

but yeah as a general rule the fluidity of Lara's moves in Crystal's games do make movability easier. :p

Thanks to everyone who replied!

I'm actually having a problem in switching off full-screen effects on PS2 as I can't find it in 'options'! Does anyone know how I can switch it off on this platform? It's really good advice and I'm pretty much counting on it.

I've tried with manual grab switched on and off and it works a bit better with 'off' in this case. Otherwise, I haven't had trouble with the controls so far in the game... it's just wierd that this has happened. I've studied several walkthroughs as well.

In order to combat my feelings of despair and frustration I've taken to doing 20 attempts a day, doing them quietly and simply, and then switching off.:(

Hey Ally,

I think the fullscreen-effects option is only for the pc...... , it's supposed to be in the 'display-settings' list.

Here is another tip: pull the lever, but WAIT until the blades come out of the second pillar, because otherwise the first one will drop too soon and Lara will never grab the second one if the first one is too low!

Also, use the interact button to get faster around the ledges, it will help.

Third, here is a tip if you want the Relic: the block you used to get to the switch, you can use it to place it under one of the pillars to prevent it from going down again! (it's the high one with a slope, close to where the Relic is)

And last: Make sure you hold the jump button instead of just tapping it, it will make her jump further

I hope it helps.........:)

You have received good advice above, but if you are still having problems it may be due to a faulty controller. I had a heck of a time in a similar occasion playing an older TR game. After a lot of frustration and wasted time, I decide to invest on a new controller and that did it for me.

Now, I don't know how old your system/controller is so that may not be the problem . . . with that in mind. . . . . DON'T go out and get yourself a new controller if you don't need to. Check with your friends and see if they have a controller that you can use it for a little while and see if that makes any difference. That would be cheaper and smarter in the case your controller is sound! ;)

Really? I've never encountered a glitch where Lara doesn't grab a ledge. In Tomb of Qualopec after falling into the pit and killing the wolves you have to move a crate to reach a vertical pole to 'hug' onto and then jump to another identical parallel pole. Doing this isn't always easy as she never grabs on the first time for me, but other than this Lara always seems to grab whatever I throw her at. :)

Ally, I have exactly the same problem at the same place but on wii. I may have actually beat you in terms of the number of hours trying to make the last jump. Lara just can't jump that far.

I've downloaded the save games for wii from Stella, but wii won't recognize them, e.g. they may well be pc saves and not wii saves.

If anybody has wii saves that will get me back in the action, I'd be most obliged. Sim

Thanks again everyone for your replies.

I did it, finally. I made the jumps. I got that BEEP-ING lead bar.

Sim, I sympathise, absolutely. I made about 60 despairing attempts until I started doing strictly 20 a day. It helped cut down on the adrenaline coursing through my body, as I knew I had my '20 a day' whether I liked it or not, and with very low expectations. But... what helped was the suggestion that I change the 'screen effects' settings.

I didn't find them on Playstation2.

However... I did find something in Options/Display called PAL-60. I changed to PAL-60 mode. And, I did it in only 8 attempts after that. After over 200 earlier ones. Maybe, Sim, you can find something similar on your Wii, a way of simplifying the display and features.

The only thing is, after completing the jumps, getting the lead bar and finally saving (the nightmare is over), I have not switched Lara on again. I have played TR since the first release of the first game, on my 16 MB (!!!) computer in DOS format. And now I've just lost the will. Something died in me.:( I'm hoping it will be resurrected one day.
